SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Barack Obama's newly minted running mate will join the Democratic hopeful onstage Saturday at a rally in this capital city where Obama launched his White House bid, a campaign official said.

A senior Obama adviser told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday that Obama and his veep choice will appear in front of the former state Capitol where Abraham Lincoln once served. The last time Obama appeared there, he announced he was running for president.

The disclosure narrowed the window Obama has to reveal his running mate. The list of possibilities is widely believed to be down to Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, who planned to campaign with Obama Thursday in his home state.

Obama strategist Anita Dunn wouldn't respond directly when asked if the Springfield event would be Obama's first appearance with his choice, but she suggested the two wouldn't necessarily be related. The campaign has said it will announce the choice in a cell phone text message to supporters.

"We could pick up the V.P. any time," Dunn said in an interview.

The campaign's announcement said only that the Illinois senator would begin his trip to the party's national convention at Saturday's event. The Democratic National Convention begins Monday in Denver.

At a town-hall meeting in Raleigh, N.C., Obama repeatedly said "he" when discussing the qualities he sought in a potential running mate, even as campaign officials cautioned not to read much into his choice of pronouns.

"Let me tell you first what I won't do: I won't hand over my energy policy to my vice president and not know necessarily what he's doing," Obama told the audience. "My vice president ... will be a member of the executive branch. He won't be one of these fourth branches of government where he thinks he's above the law," an apparent reference to Vice President Dick Cheney's handling of his office.

Story continues below

Those believed to be on Obama's short list stayed mum.

Biden coyly told reporters staking out his home in Delaware, "I'm not the guy," as he drove by. Sebelius, in an interview with the AP before she stumped for Obama in Michigan, professed no inside knowledge of when word would come.

"A week from tomorrow we will all know," she said, referring to when the running mate is scheduled to accept the nomination at the convention.

During an address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Orlando, Fla., Tuesday morning, Obama praised Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, for proposing an additional $1 billion in reconstruction projects in the Republic of Georgia after the Russian invasion.

Only Obama, his wife, Michelle, a handful of his most senior advisers and his two-member search committee know for certain who has been vetted and discussed. Staffers were already in place to support Obama's pick, including more than a dozen seasoned operatives who have set up shop in the campaign's Chicago headquarters.

Obama's plan could be similar to the one he followed in launching his campaign last year, when he posted a Web video to rev up supporters the day before his big speech. This time, Obama could announce his vice presidential choice on Friday, then appear with the person on Saturday in the same place where his campaign began.

The running mate decision also looms for McCain. In the hope of grabbing the post-convention spotlight from Obama, McCain is considering naming his running mate in the few days after the Democrats leave Denver and before the Republicans begin their convention in St. Paul, Minn.

McCain's top contenders are said to include Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Other possible choices include former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, an abortion-rights supporter, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential pick in 2000 who now is an independent.

Underscoring how seriously McCain may be considering Ridge or Lieberman, Republican officials say top McCain advisers have been reaching out to big donors and high-profile delegates in key states to gauge the impact of putting an abortion-rights supporter on the GOP ticket.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh warned Tuesday that the GOP base "will totally turn on McCain" if he picks a pro-choice running mate and predicted such a move "will ensure his defeat."

Dunn, the Obama adviser, stirred the pot by saying McCain "needs to figure out if he's going to let Rush Limbaugh and the right wing of his party direct his choice."

McCain dealt with criticism from Limbaugh and other right-wing talk show hosts when they attacked him during the primary campaign. McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded to Limbaugh's latest volley by saying, "John McCain is pro-life, always has been, and his administration will be pro-life. Anyone picked as his vice president will respect those views."

Lieberman has been traveling with McCain recently. Pawlenty was gearing up for a weekend campaign swing in Ohio and Pennsylvania on McCain's behalf, and said he might travel to Denver next week as a McCain surrogate during the Democratic National Convention.

OPEN LETTER TO OBAMA CAMPAIGN STRATEGISTS.

Dear Colleagues:-

It is with a complex admixture of fear and resentment that I write this message: fear for the unknown, and resentment against the low-voltage tempo gradually creeping into a hitherto optimistic endeavor. The campaign must deal with “what is available,” rather than contemplate with “what ought to be.” That is to say, Obama’s belabored mantra that politicians cannot underestimate the intelligence of American voters does not fly in the reality in which George Bush has been elected twice as the POTUS.

McCain seems to have learned some unfortunate lessons out of this and is appealing to the primary, instinctual, and libidinal impulses of American voters through emotionally-laden tactics of fear and “be afraid” about the potential hazards associated with Obama’s candidacy. McCain’s inroads to the atavistic impulses of American voters seem to be working. Recent Gallup Polls show McCain is ahead of Obama by five points. Take note that Obama cannot effectively counter the politics of fear and primitive politricks with rationalistic appeals to the internalized moral consciences of American voters. The supposedly reservoir of political superego, that is amenable to rational positivism, as suggested by Obama’s rebuff to the primitive appeals by McCain, is an elusive construct antagonistic to the thinking of American voters.

I am afraid Obama could lose the elections if his campaign fails to devise a strategy that could equally make inroads to the sub-conscious biological instincts of American voters.

Concerned Obama Advocate.

All this Hype surrounding Biden/Bahy/Kain Bi’den is a good choice and I can go for that but I am still in the tank for Cl’ark.

O needs to explain why not Cl’ark, what because he told the truth about Mc’Cain’s claim that being shooot down and a POW is presidential material BS!!!!!

There are way too many plus, pluses with the selection of Wes Cl’ark and I do not believe all this hype surrounding the top 3 or 4 BS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kaine is pro-life and anti-gay. Not a good pick. Picking Bayh from Indiana doesn't guarantee he will win that state since they have voted for Dem since 1964 plus the Democrats would lose the Senate seat since the governor is a Republican. Sibelius has no experience and won't guarantee that he would win Kansas.
Biden is the best pick.

Gov. K is not anti-gay, nor does he let his personal beliefs regarding abortion or the death penalty interfere with how he upholds the law.

But, I think his resume is too light.

Oh yeah, BO needs a "car salesman" kind of personality for his VP....which is what Biden would bring. Plus it wouldn't take but a few days before Biden lost his temper, and put his foot in his mouth......most likely making some racial remarks in regards some minority group. I think Biden would be a great choice!

Biden would be a good choice because they could save money on speech writers. Obama could give a speech, and then Biden could give the same speech. And if McCain chooses Jindal, Biden could tell him to go back to the 7-11.

Another good choice would be Michael Phelps, because he's almost as much of a rock star as Obama.

But the best would be Paris Hilton. Obama could use McCain's own ammunition on him.

Nothing will resurrect Michelle Obama. She will always be viewed as a black separatist who hates this country that offered her everything. Gratitude is not her best trait! She has a mean streak according to many black women I know who have had contact with her.

the poll is from 8/11 to 8/16... it's already outdated by one week, and you have both candidates choosing their VPs, the Dem convention next week, followed by the Republican Convention, which should bring the polls back to being tied.

I've tried my best to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it's getting harder and harder. I mean they gave her every thing she wanted re. the convention and it's apparently still not enough. By the way, for those who haven't read the article, one of the "backers" is Hillary's brother.

I know why Obama had the flag upside down, it is a sign of distress.

National polls are meaningless.

All polls are fungible.
Polls represent a snapshot in time.

They have no predictive value.

The poll you refer to was taken while Obama was vacationing, and while McMaverick was attacking him daily with a series of li.es.

You have made the most salient and truest and saddest point of all.

It used to be that we could look to our news media for information and insights to help us make informed, thoughtful decisions.

Now, instead of Walter Cronkite and Huntley/Brinkley we have "Katie" Couric and Abrams/Shuster (altho' less of them, thank god.).

Problem is, the majority of the public doesn't realize that so much of the media is made up of empty air-heads... That's why they take shots at Joe Biden... You have to actually be SMART to interview him, AND he won't put up with meaningless bs... It seems to me that it's more important that he has managed to be such a power in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, knows and has met with a myriad of international leaders, and NOT ANTAGONIZED ANY OF THEM... He can't be bothered with what a petty reporter thinks...which unfortunately is why he's not our candidate... Too bad...We lose.

We can only hope that, since he can't be our President, that Senator Biden will be our VP or Secy of State.

Doesn't matter who the VP is. McCain is the next president.
And those of us who are appalled by that fact had better figure out how to take control of Congress in order to block McCain and the elites who will continue turning America into a second-world nation.
The Democrats need a post-election strategy, because they are not going to be winning the White House. Sad, but true.

There is no such thing as a "second world."

There is the Old World---European nations.

There is the New World---North and South America.

There is the Third World---less-developed nations in Africa and Asia.

You make yourself sound remarkably silly.

the term First, Second and Third World refers to the post-WWII segregation of the world into those aligned with USA/NATO (First World), those aligned to the communists/Eastern Bloc (Second World), .

The American Heritage Dictionary also explains first world as "Industrialized capitalist nations of the world" during the cold war. (Note that there is no mention of democracy as a defining criteria)

Third World

1. those countries and territories, chiefly of Africa and Asia, once thought of as being outside the worlds, or spheres of influence, of the Western capitalist nations and the Soviet bloc
2. the poor and economically underdeveloped countries of the world collectively
