SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Barack Obama's newly minted running mate will join the Democratic hopeful onstage Saturday at a rally in this capital city where Obama launched his White House bid, a campaign official said.

A senior Obama adviser told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday that Obama and his veep choice will appear in front of the former state Capitol where Abraham Lincoln once served. The last time Obama appeared there, he announced he was running for president.

The disclosure narrowed the window Obama has to reveal his running mate. The list of possibilities is widely believed to be down to Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, who planned to campaign with Obama Thursday in his home state.

Obama strategist Anita Dunn wouldn't respond directly when asked if the Springfield event would be Obama's first appearance with his choice, but she suggested the two wouldn't necessarily be related. The campaign has said it will announce the choice in a cell phone text message to supporters.

"We could pick up the V.P. any time," Dunn said in an interview.

The campaign's announcement said only that the Illinois senator would begin his trip to the party's national convention at Saturday's event. The Democratic National Convention begins Monday in Denver.

At a town-hall meeting in Raleigh, N.C., Obama repeatedly said "he" when discussing the qualities he sought in a potential running mate, even as campaign officials cautioned not to read much into his choice of pronouns.

"Let me tell you first what I won't do: I won't hand over my energy policy to my vice president and not know necessarily what he's doing," Obama told the audience. "My vice president ... will be a member of the executive branch. He won't be one of these fourth branches of government where he thinks he's above the law," an apparent reference to Vice President Dick Cheney's handling of his office.

Those believed to be on Obama's short list stayed mum.

Biden coyly told reporters staking out his home in Delaware, "I'm not the guy," as he drove by. Sebelius, in an interview with the AP before she stumped for Obama in Michigan, professed no inside knowledge of when word would come.

"A week from tomorrow we will all know," she said, referring to when the running mate is scheduled to accept the nomination at the convention.

During an address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Orlando, Fla., Tuesday morning, Obama praised Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, for proposing an additional $1 billion in reconstruction projects in the Republic of Georgia after the Russian invasion.

Only Obama, his wife, Michelle, a handful of his most senior advisers and his two-member search committee know for certain who has been vetted and discussed. Staffers were already in place to support Obama's pick, including more than a dozen seasoned operatives who have set up shop in the campaign's Chicago headquarters.

Obama's plan could be similar to the one he followed in launching his campaign last year, when he posted a Web video to rev up supporters the day before his big speech. This time, Obama could announce his vice presidential choice on Friday, then appear with the person on Saturday in the same place where his campaign began.

The running mate decision also looms for McCain. In the hope of grabbing the post-convention spotlight from Obama, McCain is considering naming his running mate in the few days after the Democrats leave Denver and before the Republicans begin their convention in St. Paul, Minn.

McCain's top contenders are said to include Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Other possible choices include former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, an abortion-rights supporter, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential pick in 2000 who now is an independent.

Underscoring how seriously McCain may be considering Ridge or Lieberman, Republican officials say top McCain advisers have been reaching out to big donors and high-profile delegates in key states to gauge the impact of putting an abortion-rights supporter on the GOP ticket.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh warned Tuesday that the GOP base "will totally turn on McCain" if he picks a pro-choice running mate and predicted such a move "will ensure his defeat."

Dunn, the Obama adviser, stirred the pot by saying McCain "needs to figure out if he's going to let Rush Limbaugh and the right wing of his party direct his choice."

McCain dealt with criticism from Limbaugh and other right-wing talk show hosts when they attacked him during the primary campaign. McCain spokesman Brian Rogers responded to Limbaugh's latest volley by saying, "John McCain is pro-life, always has been, and his administration will be pro-life. Anyone picked as his vice president will respect those views."

Lieberman has been traveling with McCain recently. Pawlenty was gearing up for a weekend campaign swing in Ohio and Pennsylvania on McCain's behalf, and said he might travel to Denver next week as a McCain surrogate during the Democratic National Convention.

There's this strong logic that Obama should bite the bullet and pick Hillary, the way Kennedy did Johnson. But, unlike Johnson (and rather like Edwards in 2004), Hillary would have a disincentive to go all-out as part of Obama's ticket. I think she'd undermine him. While Johnson had every reason to want to keep Nixon out of the White House in 1960, Hillary, OTOH, might think four years of McCain to be just the thing. (Edwards had a similar conflict of interest.)

If Obama pulls a surprise, I think it will be Bill Richardson, whose name seems to have dropped out of speculation. Chuck Hagel would also do wonders for reviving Obama's flagging reformist cred, if he could get him past the Democratic delegates next week.

As to McCain, I still think he might confound everyone and pick a woman, and her name will be Meg Whitman.

I think the Clintons have gone way to far this time around, the Dems have split as usual.

However someone is going to have to get really nasty and fight back.

Maybe Biden can help.

Oh for pete's sake. And what makes Maher think that Bill and Hillary who, admittedly, are very good at attacking, would strain themselves on Obama's account? At best, they would feign aggression toward the olher camp. All show. And, at the same time, they'd be undermining the h*ll out of him.

Respectfully, I totally disagree. I do not see how it would benefit anyone but the Clintons and their corporate benefactors. I'm sick of Bill's post-presedential "deal making", which has brought him closer and closer to the deplorable "national security/war/drugs" business-empire that Bush I, Carlucci, David Rockefeller and others have built over the decades.

Remember this day: August 20, 2008. It's the day that this U.S. administration made the biggest foreign policy blunder ever. It is a strategic blunder much worse than going into Iraq.

I will christen this moment in time: Day of Esc a lation

Con di just signed the Mis sle Defense System Treaty with Po land today, and the Russians are responding that they will sign a similar treaty with Syria and Belarus for starters. Sy ria states that they are interested in preserving the security of Russia.

Welcome to a new age of serious escalation and the beginning of an unpredictable change in the balance of power.

Anyone wondering about what is going through Ahme din ejad's mind at this time?

This is all happening because the Rethuglicans would rather push us into WWIII than lose an election. They are purposely creating the October surprise. Last time they did it with terror alerts but since people are not afraid of the terrorist threat anymore they have to rekindle the cold war.

Did anyone say W is a madm an? This is the question everyone should be asking themselves.

It reminds me of the WWII era when everyone was distracted and just letting that mad man gain more and more power. He had everyone fooled. Suddenly people woke up and realized they had created a monster. Why? Because ignorance is bliss. People were asleep at the switch.

Ignorance is bliss in this country. Let's just give the government more and more and more power over our lives. Let's just give this madman the benefit of the doubt. Oh, he's just protecting us, that's all. Who cares about the consequences, who cares about human rights, civil rights right?

Eeeeeh? Wrooooooooooong.

Taking our country back should be one motto we as citizens should take up and run with. There is a time when everyone should be told how Mccain while not totally bush 3 is so close to crazy and has sold out to the very lobbyists which bush and co and to be fair and honest, some dems in congress have done the very same thing. WHile we are a companies supposedly of big business just how much of the business which used to be american is no longer? When not to much is written anymore which doesn't go to India to be redone/edited and printed then what happened to our Free Press? Our jobs are gone overseas and Mccain has promoted this as he has gone to cananda/columbia/mexico and so on. His lobbyists are for foreign countries too as people found out for sure with Georgia and Russia. It might be too late unless we chose Obama and go forward with bringing back the jobs to america.

In the blogsphere I see over and over again people who know what McBush is all about. Here is an example from Cafferty's blog.

http://caffertyfile.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/15/why-do-military-donations-favor-obama-over-mccain/

"Here’s my question to you: Why are members of the military donating more money to Barack Obama despite John McCain’s military background?

Michael from Greenfield, Wisconsin writes:
As a Vietnam era ex-Marine veteran with a son who is in the Army and was wounded in Iraq in 2003, I would never give a penny to John McCain. I personally do not know any other veterans who are donating to McCain either. Jack, veterans hate war, wrong wars, and the people who talk so cavalierly about waging them. Usually those who never served during war, or never served at all, are the ones who talk so loosely about war. The veterans who I knew that liked war were either stupid, crazy, homicidal, or all of the above. Where does that leave McCain?

Ronald writes:
As a resident of Arizona and a combat veteran, I have had occasion to contact “our” senator on a matter of interest to veterans. Not only did his staff do nothing, they didn’t even have the courtesy to acknowledge they received my emails (2). McCain can say he is “always there” for veterans, but that is just hot air. Contrary to what George Bush said, both he and McCain opposed the new GI bill.

As an active duty sailor who has been in the Navy for the entire Bush administration, I am tired - sick and tired of fighting in a war I opposed from the beginning. I did donate to Obama’s campaign because the U.S. needs change and not more of McBush. Who wants to spend 100 years in Iraq if need be? Not me. If McSame is elected, I would have spent my whole 20 years in the military in Iraq.

David from Tampa, Florida writes:
Jack, The reason is the lower ranks, guys with their butts on the line doing the dirty work, want to return home quickly. They will support that candidate who will extract them from harm’s ways, they hope. Higher-ranking officers, who spend most of their time brown-nosing for their next promotion and are in the rear areas and pretty much out of harm’s way, support those they believe will increase their lot in life. RALEIGH, N.C. — A m ental patient d ied after workers at a North Carolina hospital left him in a chair for 22 hours without feeding him or helping him use the bathroom, said federal officials who have t_hreatened to cut off the facility's funding.

The state sent a team Tuesday to help Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro draft new procedures to ensure patients receive proper care.

An investigator's report released Monday found that 50-year-old Steven Sabock d ied in April after he at one point c hoked on medication and had been left sitting in a chair for close to a day at the facility. Surveillance video showed hospital staff watching television and playing cards just a few feet away.

Thanks to our zero safety net I lost my job after working over 20 years, I lost my 6 figure 401k, I lost my health insurance and I live in a state with the longest waiting period to go in front judge to beg for Social Security disability over 900 days, why because the judge was moonlighting for the military. The long term disability and supplemental disability I me and my company paid for which was supposed to give me 80% of my income gives me less than half of my income. Yet we have PUMA's out there that are obstructing health care because their candidate did not win. It's maddening for people out their that really need government to work.
