I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Odignity

There was a thread of stern if not defensive outrage in Barack Obama's address at the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday. The Illinois Democrat did not raise his voice, nor did his facial expression reflect a sense of anger. But he was pointed in his criticism and direct in lambasting the type of campaign his Republican opponent, John McCain, is running.

"Yesterday, Senator McCain came before you," said Obama. "He is a man who has served this nation honorably, and he correctly stated that one of the chief criteria for the American people in this election is going to be who can exercise the best judgment as Commander in Chief. But instead of just offering policy answers, he turned to a typical laundry list of political attacks. He said that I have changed my position on Iraq when I have not. He said that I am for a path of "retreat and failure." And he declared, "Behind all of these claims and positions by Senator Obama lies the ambition to be president" -- suggesting, as he has so many times, that I put personal ambition before my country. That is John McCain's prerogative. He can run that kind of campaign, and -- frankly -- that's how political campaigns have been run in recent years. But I believe the American people are better than that. I believe that this defining moment demands something more of us."

It is a vintage Obama line: deploring the tactics of his opponent as a method of rising above the fray. And, indeed, later in the address -- which was focused on redefining proper judgment on Iraq (why, Obama asked, should we give McCain a pass on his false predictions leading up to the invasion?) -- the presumptive Democratic nominee again chastised his challenger for resorting to the politics of the past.

"One of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism," he said, to applause. "I have never suggested that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same. Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain."

It's curious to see how this method of campaigning, which was effective in the primary campaign, will play out in the general. Obama's substantive critiques of McCain's foreign policy -- like asking why the Arizona Republican nominee would "follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell" but not target him in Pakistan without that country's permission -- were equally if not more effective. Moreover, there is a growing list of Democratic observers who are pining for a more aggressive posture in which Obama is not just parlaying the McCain attack de jour, but dictating the campaign theme.

There was a thread of stern if not defensive outrage in Barack Obama's address at the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday. The Illinois Democrat did not raise his voice, nor did his facial expression ...

Oh please. Obama is just as guilty as playing dirty ( and using the race card)

"It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy," Obama told a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. "We know what kind of campaign they're going to run. They're going to try to make you afraid.

"They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?"

Redforman,

Obama, was telling every body what their going to do which they have been doing for years. What world do you live in? As Black man I live in reality and know there was 246 years of slavery and 100 years of jim crow obression in this country. If you think there are no racist or white people with racial resenment in the democratic and southern republican party your crazy. Why would the Black person want to play the so-called card race to try to make white people feel guilty to vote for him, you can't be this stupid! Black people like me who are in their late 30's early 40's where the first generation of Black people not born into leagal segregation, please wake up!

ummmmmmm Republicans have a track record of fear mongering. Remember the Willie Horton add from Daddy Bush.....then all you heard from the Republicans after September 11th even though W promised to never use that tragic day as a political tool they made said that only a Republican would " protect" us from another attack.

And now people like you equate the fear word to racism.

Same OLD republicans. And it is getting old.

How is calling Republicans out for their dirty tactics dirty?

What you're really saying is, you can dish it out, but you can't take it.

A little lesson for you and your hero, Jerome Corsi:
If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the fire.

That is not playing the race card; It is calling the Republicans out on their racial innuendoes. Of course Republicans want to make Obama seem "different." They did it to Kerry. They tried to make him into an elitist out-of-touch with Americans type candidate -- as if the republicans aren't LOL. But Kerry did not have to endure the types of attacks Obama has.

The point Iam trying to make is that they are using subtle and not so subtle symbology in their ad videos and coded words in statements that clearly illustrate race-baiting.

Videos with young white women and Obama, calling him a "celebrity" has a two-fold message: 1) be afraid, be very afraid of a black man dating your daughter 2) celebrity status -- the GOP's vitriol against Hollywood types (except when they want to rip off their music). They are so freaking hypocritical.

Obama telling the voters what the republicans are doing is like preventative medicine. Forewarned voters hopefully will not fall for their shenanigans .... Not this time.

Open minds and reasoned logic are needed more than ever in this election season.

Well...let me tell you how the local network news covered this story this evening......all three networks coverage was worded very similar....(which in itself makes you realize that they are just picking it up off the wire.)

went something like this.......
In politics today the attacks continued between the two candidates...Sen Obama attacking John McCain ...(cut to video of Obama demanding dignity) On the other side McCain (cut to video of McCain attacking Obama).
Kind of neutralizes Obama's point.

And, courtesy of Olberman tonight, here's some ammo because McCain actually did an "audio book" tape...from his 2002 book, "Worth The Fighting For", apparently written when McCain felt he'd lost his one chance. So, now, as he is campaigning by trying to smear Obama's patriotism, telling the VFW that Obama put "ambition" and not country first, what was McCain saying about himself in 2002: "I didn't decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be President because it had become my ambition to be President." What a jerk. John McCain. Oil First.

Obama is not resorting to McCain's dirty low tricks and I do not think he needs to. Obama is trying to educate the public about what is wrong and how he intends to lead the country toward lasting solutions.

McCain on the other hand attacks Obama because he has nothing to run on. His increasing extremist and reactionary language toward his opponent is the same language he uses against other countries. McCain's bellicose rhetoric: threatening Putin, threatening Iran, 100 years in Iraq, perpetual war so if that is the type of president Americans want so be it.

If Americans think corporations should get more tax breaks, Social Security should be privatized, employees should be taxed, but not employers, so on and so forth McCain will get elected.

If Americans want a president who respects the electorate, talks to us in full sentences instead of 5-word quips and is really interested in solving the challenges we face rather than compounding them, Obama will be elected. Otherwise McCain will take the helm and all of us will be f___ked.

If Americans want a: trigger-happy, in-your-face, militaristic type of president they'll choose McCain.

If Americans want a sane, intelligent, knowledgeable president they'll elect Obama.

Americans deserve the president they get. However I truly hope for all of our sake it is not McCain.

If you walk into a boxing ring and tell your opponent that you are going to take the
"classy high road", you will get knocked down. You have to be willing to get ugly.
Hillary had all those years in Washington learning the tricks of the Repubs, it's
that very "experience" that made her 'so willing to fight like hell for it'.
She had all that experience with the Repubs to actually make her 'angry'.
Obama seems to lack that same passion and I wonder if it's because he hasn't
had enough experience with those Repubs to actually 'feel' angry at them.
Obama can't keep letting other people throw the punches for him.
I was NEVER a Hillary supporter, but I am seeing the plus side of all her years in
Washington...that girl sure knew how to fight back , she was willing to get ugly.

She made you proud, did she?
She was as bad as the repugs she was all about division.......I don't like the right behaving like this...I don't like the left behaving like this. This country is now divided to a boiling point..
I have lost all respect for the Clintons because of this.
How about............this country knocks off all the dirty tricks, stops being immoral......and unites...oh wait...that's what Obama wants.!

I never supported Hillary, but is it all her EXPERIENCE fighting the Republicans in
Washington that made her so passionate and willing to fight like hell?
Is Obama 'not willing to get dirty' because he hasn't spent enough time fighting those
Repubs, the anger hasn't built up in him yet?
How come the only passion, heat and fire I see is coming from Keith on MSNBC?
Does Obama expect others to keep doing all the fighting for him?
You don't step into a boxing ring and tell your opponent that you want to take the 'high road'.
He'll knock you out right there and WIN.......Hillary knew this.
That lady could sure take a puch and throw one back out there even HARDER!
She sure was ANGRY at Bush, she sure was willing to 'get ugly' and fight like hell for it.

A different style of fighting in a boxing match, pressurized punches utilizing pressure points, can change any boxing match, you just have to learn the style. But then, the status quo refuse to learn anything new, they like doing the same old thing and expecting different results.

New Century, new tactics. The games in DC got old and tired as those who perpetrated the fraud of public service.

This same kind of BS, just won't do. America is wide awake on these candidates, and it's on now.
We the People want OUR Government back NOW!

You messed with our elderly grandma's and grandpa's, our students now serving their country in a war built on lies. The straw house is about to be blown down by the American Democracy Wolf of JUSTICE.

Our laws are to be obeyed and our constitution valued as well as the TEN Commandments in our lives. Common Sense has been overruled by bullies for Oil Corporations, by the OIL men. Con Men and lobbyist imps, quagmiring our passing of laws for the people.

Jessegirl,

you have been watching to much cable political talk. The reason Obama is here is because he is smart cool and exceptional. This is not a sporting event this is for who be the next leader of America. Instead of telling Obama he should become a mud fighter you need to tell the McCain camp to raise its level.

What is this about traveling with McCain?? Why would he when there will be three debates with McCain? I can't remember Bush ever going to events with Gore or Kerry. Just what would that accomplish? Would it be Obama going to Republican events or McCain going to Democratic events? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard.

McSame may try to paint the conflict he's stirring with Russia as a conflict with resurgent Communism, but it will be a lie. Russia today is no more Communist than America--both have rampant fascist tendencies, but that's another story.

It is hard to believe that--after GW Bush--people could be fooled into voting for more of the same, especially in the person of a candidate who seems to be even more stupid and ill educated than the current White House resident.

I intend to be an optimist until proven wrong. If O. loses, I may go back to Norway.
