I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Odignity

There was a thread of stern if not defensive outrage in Barack Obama's address at the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday. The Illinois Democrat did not raise his voice, nor did his facial expression reflect a sense of anger. But he was pointed in his criticism and direct in lambasting the type of campaign his Republican opponent, John McCain, is running.

"Yesterday, Senator McCain came before you," said Obama. "He is a man who has served this nation honorably, and he correctly stated that one of the chief criteria for the American people in this election is going to be who can exercise the best judgment as Commander in Chief. But instead of just offering policy answers, he turned to a typical laundry list of political attacks. He said that I have changed my position on Iraq when I have not. He said that I am for a path of "retreat and failure." And he declared, "Behind all of these claims and positions by Senator Obama lies the ambition to be president" -- suggesting, as he has so many times, that I put personal ambition before my country. That is John McCain's prerogative. He can run that kind of campaign, and -- frankly -- that's how political campaigns have been run in recent years. But I believe the American people are better than that. I believe that this defining moment demands something more of us."

It is a vintage Obama line: deploring the tactics of his opponent as a method of rising above the fray. And, indeed, later in the address -- which was focused on redefining proper judgment on Iraq (why, Obama asked, should we give McCain a pass on his false predictions leading up to the invasion?) -- the presumptive Democratic nominee again chastised his challenger for resorting to the politics of the past.

"One of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism," he said, to applause. "I have never suggested that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same. Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain."

It's curious to see how this method of campaigning, which was effective in the primary campaign, will play out in the general. Obama's substantive critiques of McCain's foreign policy -- like asking why the Arizona Republican nominee would "follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell" but not target him in Pakistan without that country's permission -- were equally if not more effective. Moreover, there is a growing list of Democratic observers who are pining for a more aggressive posture in which Obama is not just parlaying the McCain attack de jour, but dictating the campaign theme.

There was a thread of stern if not defensive outrage in Barack Obama's address at the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Tuesday. The Illinois Democrat did not raise his voice, nor did his facial expression ...

Dude I like Obama but he needs to forget about the dignification of a political campaign. It is time to go Chicago style politics on McCain or Obama will lose. Plain and simple. No one is thinking about dignity. I am trying to decide if I should put half of tank of gas and use the other half to get some food with.. So F dignification and get dirty!

A large part of what Obama wants to win back is an engaged and civil society - not just the Office. If he wins by resorting to the same tactics as the Rebublicans, he's lost much of what he will need to do the job of repairing the damage done since Reagan - and really since Nixon. Many posters here use mirror-image language and sentiment of the Republican attack machine. Your vote is welcome, and you will be glad you supported Obama. I do hope your advise on running the campaign is, however, not heeded.

Exactly! Obam wants to win back "an engaged and civil society - not just the Office" He is counting on us being there.

It is said that the liberals wear their bleeding heart on their sleeves.
It can be countered that conservatives wear their hypocritical and cold dead heart on their lapel in the form of a tarnished or rusting flag pin that gives off no luster.

McCain says he is for America but on closer analysis his America is a certain color and in a certain tax bracket.

Mr. Obama is un-American to McCain due to color of face as indicated in the tone and methods of his lame attacks. What should one who shares that color be left to think about McCain’s desire and intentions to lead all the people?

To the brown conservative I ask, are you a damn fool or what?

To Rick Warren I say, God is gonna get you son, and it will happen before you leave this earth for hypocrisy will not stand -- SUCKA (smirk on that)! You, who claim to preach the gospel, would participate in a back-alley shell game of deceit -- and call that just and fair?

As BB King said, “The thrill is gone” America, we just have not realized it yet. It’s all shaping up to be one heck of a comeuppance for a nation afflicted by hypocrites and liars. From Georgia to Iraq, from the Sudan to Iran, from Pakistan to Lebanon, American designs of flawed hegemony are unraveling.

Obama is no Moses but he may be the best chance we have to pull back from the brink.

Gimmee a break! It sounds like you're the one who is stuck on color. It is not Obama's color that conservatives have a problem with, it is his weak policies, and liberal bashing of all that is America that conservatives have a problem with. Obama's color has nothing to do with it!

No wonder the USA is tacky and tasteless. Candidates have to pander and appease the lowest denominator of the population to win. The Budweiser crowd. Uneducated, uninformed, ill traveled, non passport holding, book reading, etc.... crowd. Those who still wonder about evolution, whether a woman has a right to make her own health decisions, stem cell research, the world is only 6,000 yrs old.... Technologies and thought that moves a nation forward. Instead the USA is empowering those who want USA to go back to the 19th century. Obama said it so well.... "It's as if they take pride in being ignorant." Welcome to the USA Obama, welcome.

I am for tacky and tasteless. This country in the last 100 have fought and won two world wars and saved Europe, Won the cold war and last time I checked Lenin and Stalin are still dead, and thousands still try to get across the border to try to get in the USA. Obama or if its McCain if he becomes President, I will be a prouct of that "tacky and tasteless" country and I will be continue to be proud of my country.

I think I get your intent but not sure about the words.
Ill traveled? What does that mean?
Non passport holding? Many educated people don't have passports.
Book reading? Not a bad thing, in my opinion.

I suspect the poster MEANT 'NON-book reading'. Otherwise that item doesn't really 'flow' with the rest of the list.

McCain has already cashed in his medals of honor to be the latest lap dog for the neo-con right wing nuts. I know Brarack can't say it but I think we all should start saying it. McCain is cashing in his medals of honor for a campaign of dishonor. Say it with me. Over and over and over again...

What part of this corrupt system of ours don't Democrats understand? The MSM is OVERWHELMINGLY Republican. They use their power to give almost unlimited advertising to any crazy claim made by the GOP. The Democrats are up against Republicans, but really they are up against the MSM. That is the elephant in the room. And don't expect to shame them into playing nice. Nope. You want to win? You better fight uglier, dirtier, and you better plan on spending billions to fight through the MSM propaganda.

Otherwise, get ready for President McCain.

Like I told you when they were attacking Clinton, Obama was next. Long gone are any mentions of Obama the "rockstar". Now it is time to play hardball. Expect nonstop attacks on Obama from here on out.

A fool hardy and insanely reckless political stunt. Does this guy have all his faculties about him?

I said it in a previous post about the pastor WARREN/Mc CAIN set up
The pastor just wanted some attention for his organization so he invited Obama(note that it was the first time a democrat was invited haha) why?
Because Obama=big audience=more ads=media attention and coverage=a lot of Dollars
It would interseting to know how much money did this event brought to the congregation
Mc CAIN ISN't interesting, there's NO enthousiam like for Obama ...Obama makes any media ANY media sell
Mc CAIN doesn't inspire, Obama does
The pastor just wanted his share, he got that chance to make some audience AND big money thanks to Obama
But the pastor Failed!!!!! he actually LIED and Mc CAIN cheated
they DID set up Obama( Read again what Mc CAIN said about the Supreme Court and how Mr WARREN reacted)
WARREN was clever at some point:follow the money!!!!!but he lied to get some!!!
ha money money money
Now , do you think that evil exists, pastor?

Mccain acts as if we own Iraq. We don't. We are spending US money as if we own Iraq. Big difference. Iraq needs to step up to plate and pay for their own protection. How long does it take to train their troops? They should be in control of their security. Does it take that long to train US troops? Wht are we in control except the millions in US banks and ground forces in Iraq? Is it because we don't want to give up control of that money. Do the Republicans need more time to drain that excess? Americans need help. When will it be our turn Mccain?

Dear Barack,
I regret to inform you that the supply of dignity for the Republican party was used up in the 19th century. After the death of President Lincoln, no more dignity was available for Republicans, though a temporary dispensatin was granted to President T.R. Roosevelt. I should point out, that any Republicans claiming to be like TR, or inheritors of his vision, are lying.

Please go an as you have been. The country needs a real president, for a change.

Thank you,
Book Designer

What is wrong with some of you people? Why are you getting antsy? Let Obama do his thing. He knows what he is doing. If Americans are dumb enough to vote McCain in light of what he stands for and the fact that he pledges 4 more years of George Bush? well - so be it. Just don't go crying after the fact. Obama - stick to your values. You trust in the integrity of the American people and if they don't vote democrat -- it is their problem and not yours. You and your family will be fine . . . however, we all will be up craps creek with no toilet paper and we would deserve it.

I think people are just so passionate and unwilling to face the possibility of another disgraceful, presidential term, and we all are paying such close attention, that every little bump feels like a disaster about to happen. I agree with you, though. Not This Time!

Obama '08!

Not to mention the fact that MOST people DO NOT pay attention to the Presidential race until AFTER the conventions. Period. End of Sentence. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Senator O is holding off his major counter attacks until the 'presumptive' is dropped from the references to him.

In other words, when he becomes the Democratic Presidential Nominee outright -- no qualifiers, no exceptions, no 'what ifs' -- then we'll see a change in tactics. But, for those of you who want to see him get down and dirty -- I don't think THAT'S going to happen. But there IS a way to fight back HARD WITHOUT getting in the dirt.

He's done it so far, why do so many people think it won't work the rest of the way. "Slow and steady wins the race." Or to put it another way, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

If the mudslinging is working for McCain then Obama can't just keep asking McCain to be dignified!McCain lost his dignity a long time ago when he chased a youngster around the cocktail table while he is still married to his first wife.
If Obama still have to defense his patriotism now or other lies about him, his defensive is not working against McCain. Ask McCain to respect patriotism from people who are not POWs or in the army. Patriotism is not theirs only. You don't even have to boast about your patriotism if you really have it. Do we really have to say "I love America" everyday to prove it? Is McCain really questioning people's patriotism when they work in their own capability to improve their communities not in the front line? Hopefully voters can see the silliness of these attacks from McCain or others who want to divide the country according to the races, religions, colors, ...
