AntiWar.Com:

The American people should be eternally grateful to Old Europe for having spiked the Bush-McCain plan to bring Georgia into NATO.

Had Georgia been in NATO when Mikheil Saakashvili invaded South Ossetia, we would be eyeball to eyeball with Russia, facing war in the Caucasus, where Moscow's superiority is as great as U.S. superiority in the Caribbean during the Cuban missile crisis.

If the Russia-Georgia war proves nothing else, it is the insanity of giving erratic hotheads in volatile nations the power to drag the United States into war.

And.......
Putin is a follower of Kissinger's view of the future world, in which there will be not one super power but several spheres of influence including China and Russia. Putin's following China's blueprint and creating an autocracy with capitalism. It worked for the Romanovs for 400 years, so Putin may not be wrong. What Putin has on his side is the richest deposit of resources on earth over a terrain that is over three times the size of the USA. He's got a cash surplus currently of 157 billion, and New York investment banks line up to do double digit business in Russia. The punishment of Georgia is akin to the old USSR tactic "Finlandization": where threats and intimidation are so effective an actual occupation of the country is not necessary. It probably won't be necessary for Putin to launch an attack on Ukraine, Latvia, and Estonia. And they know this too well.

As the USSR fell, the USA promised Ghorbachev to let it happen and in return we would not spread NATO to its borders. We lied. Germany has an underwater oil pipeline from Russia avoiding Poland because of their instability. Now we lie again about a missile defense shield that doesn't work against missiles that don't exist. NATO was created to protect the strategic interests of the west. Poland and Georgia are examples of the rabid nationalism that infects these new states that we Yanks don't understand but Europe does. Mix in over 20 million ethnic Russians in these lands with duo passports all sitting on a powderkeg of seething anger that will explode just like Georgia. To permit the US fleet to port at Yalta is akin to the USA ceeding the Gulf of Mexico to the Russian Fleet. It ain't gonna happen.
Nato is overextended in both security guarantees and in its mission to the west. It time to pull back on both.

Buchanan is the best political/historian/analyst anywhere...even if I don't agree with his political views. Notwithstanding, his commentaries are definitely worth a read. Here's a link to other articles by him. Read the Article from April 1st of this year......very interesting.

Pat is red hot, he gets better all the time, too bad there is no one remotely like him on the craven left, with the guts to challenge their own.

"If the Russia-Georgia war proves nothing else, it is the insanity of giving erratic hotheads in volatile nations the power to drag the United States into war. "

The goal of the GOP in 2008. It's what they've done for the last 8 years and incredibly, they feel it's a winning strategy.

BUSH STARTED COLD WAR TWO (PART FOUR)

The path of freedom you have chosen is not easy, but you will not travel it alone. Americans respect your courageous choice for liberty. And as you build a free and democratic Georgia, the American people will stand with you.... [T]he sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia must be respected -- the territorial [sic] and sovereignty of Georgia must be respected by all nations. (The Imperial President George Walker Bush)

BUSH STARTED COLD WAR TWO (PART THREE)

Gen. David “Betray Us” Petraeus, trained three Battalions of Georgians in Iraq for a Brigade of (4) size, with (2) Battalions in reserve (1) Georgian, (1) Blackwater Inc. Mercenaries, offensive against the (UN) Peace keeping forces in Georgia, and had a Battalion of Blackwater Inc. train two Battalions in Georgia, then to prepare for the Aggression, “Betray Us” ran a mock exercise between the two battions of Georgian Aggressors, and US Forces, pull out the US Military Forces, leave (1) one Battalion of Blackwater Inc. Mercenaries as backup and support to the Georgian full Brigade, with one Battalion in Reserve Georgian offensive.

The plan would have worked but for one mistake on Betray Us plans, THE KGB they got wind of it and when the offensive came, the Soviets responded with over whelming force, taking the Blackwater Inc. Mercenaries by surprise, and now (R-SC) US Senator Lindsey Graham and (I-CN) US Senator Joe Lieberman are over making deals to get the Blackwater Inc. Mercenaries dead, wounded, and captured out. Putin won a military and political victory.

Georgia de facto, members of (NATO) The North Atlantic Treaty Organization by decree of the Imperial President of Military Industrial Complex of the United States. To be protected by the Military Industrial Complex of The United States. Bush/Cheney egged on the Georgians to believe that they're de facto members of NATO, that America will protect them against the Russian bear.

BUSH STARTED COLD WAR TWO (PART TWO)

While at least (2) Battalions of Blackwater Inc. (1800) Mercenaries and the United States Military has had up to (2) Two Battalions of United States Army (1,650) troops conducting joint exercises with the Georgian Aggressors. The United States Army Troops were pulled out soon before the attacks on Tskhinvali, but the Blackwater Inc. Mercenaries remained.

Two days after the aggression of Georgians against the (UN) United Peace Keeping Troops and documented New Soviet Russians Citizens, and the entry of Soviet Troops to restore order, foreign fighters, including Blackwater Inc. Mercenaries were found among the dead of those fighting against New Soviet Russian Troops, in Tskhinvali .

At the same time at the order of the Imperial President George Bush (3) Battalions (2000) Georgian Aggressors who had been trained in Iraq, by United States Armed Forces were flown from Iraq to Tskhinvali, to aid in the fight against (UN) Peace keepers and New Soviet Russian Citizens.

BUSH STARTED COLD WAR TWO (PART ONE)

Who gave the greenlight to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to launch an offensive against the capital city of the breakaway republic of South Ossetia? America has hundreds of military advisors and trainers in Georgia. To prepare Georgian troops for service in Iraq (they were the third largest national contingent, behind the US and UK) and for the intended NATO membership. It's inconceivable that US officials didn't know about the Georgian offensive. Who gave the greenlight for what became a debacle for Georgia? Russia used the move as a rationale to pour its troops into South Ossetia and as a pretext to then shatter the Georgian military and do everything else it's done in Georgia.

Who gave the green light to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to launch an offensive War against the capital city of the breakaway republic of South Ossetia? Who gave the green light for what became a debacle for Georgia? The Imperial President of the (MIC) Military Industrial Complex George Walker Bush of course.

Israel with the knowledge and support of the (MIC) and the Imperial President has been selling arms to the Mikheil Saakashvili Government, With the eruption of fighting between Russia and Georgia, Israel has found itself with New Soviet Russian retribution in the form of increased arms sales to Iran and Syria.

The major point of contention is the expansion of NATO in Russia's backyard, which Bush 1 said would not happen. Clinton, the neoliberal, and Bush, the neocon, reneged on that pledge. Obama is a neoliberal not a progressive. Neoliberalism is the flip side of neoconservatism. Obama's neoliberal handlers have the same objectives as Bush's neocon handlers, they just think that the neocons fumbled the ball.

I don't buy that.

Obama is nothing if not intelligent. And I don't care who his advisors are he will be able to deal with affair competently and intelligently.

Of course compared to what we have seen the past 8 years my dog Buster wouuld look good.

But I have faith in Obama.

I for no other reason than I need some form of hope.

I agree with Buchanan on very little, but his neocon smackdowns are spot on.

As the old saw goes, "A stopped clock is right at least twice a day". Nevertheless, Buchanan is correct here--unlike most on the right, he did oppose the Iraq war at the outset, so this is the second time that I've agreed with him about an issue!
