Obama

Yesterday, three prominent progressive bloggers suggested Barack Obama has a serious weakness. Josh Marshall writes at TPM:

With so many instances of corruption and influence-peddling around him and whatever problems with the candidate that are keeping the campaign from letting reporters interview him anymore, John McCain is now again charging Obama with what amounts to soft treason -- wanting to lose the war in Iraq in order to make himself president. The lack of any consistent lines of attack against McCain is becoming palpable.

John Aravosis chimes in at America Blog, saying Obama's lack of attack is having an effect on activists:

What Josh said today, and what Josh has written between the lines of a lot of posts on his blog of late, is something we're hearing a lot of from a lot of people. There is an incredible discontent out there with the way this campaign is being run. The fact that the discontent isn't being recognized, isn't being assuaged, is disturbing. People aren't worried about the election, they're becoming despondent about it. They're not motivated to work twice as hard, they instead feel as if they've had the wind knocked out of them. This is far beyond a healthy skepticism as to whether Obama can win. While Obama's attacks today on McCain are heartening, we need to see more of it. People need to see that Barack Obama has as big of balls as John McCain and, well, Hillary Clinton.

Joe Sudbay adds:

Just to be clear, this isn't the kind of post we want to be writing right now. We'd much rather be beating the crap out of John McCain's hypocrisy and rebutting the Karl Rove attacks on Obama. Anyone who read this blog during the primaries knows how strongly we felt about nominating Obama. Our commitment can't be questioned. We really, really, really want a Democratic president. But, we're not getting much to work with from the Obama campaign, hence this post. As John wrote, this feeling is pervasive. For some reason, Obama's top advisers seem to be living in their own bubble and this campaign, which we all thought would be different, is starting to feel like Democratic campaigns of the past. There's plenty of time to fix this. The blogs are poised to help (should the campaign ever decide to truly engage us). Not to be corny, but this campaign isn't about Barack Obama or his campaign staff or his media consultants or his Internet team. It's bigger than all of them and they need to realize that. This really is about our nation's future. We have to win and the Obama campaign needs to let us all help him win.

Today Obama responded to McCain's patriotism attacks in a style he used effectively against Hillary Clinton -- criticizing the tone of his opponent's campaign. Whether that will blunt those attacks or satisfy worried observers remains to be seen.

Obama-mania was officially dead as of the last debate. The press will no longer spin for Obama as they did before. Now they will turn against him and spin for McCain. I predicted all this and said so for a year and a half. Now its happening.

And just like i predicted: all you Obama supporters had false passion. I said when the media turns against Obama you'll all simply lie down and go to sleep. just like you're doing now. Where's your passion now????

I have to challenge this. I agree that I'm surprised that so many folks have been as negative as they have and want to dramatically change everything now, but it doesn't mean that everyone's lost their passion. I have to say all it's done for me is to make me re-double my efforts. In the last two elections I just sat idley by and figured that people couldn't be that stupid, that I didn't have to do anything. Not this time! I don't preach to anyone, but I try to be as open as possible and make as many respectful arguments as I can. Most of the folks I talk to appreciate it actually. Even if he does lose, I'll feel a heck of a lot better knowing that I worked for something, and I'll be as involved as possible trying to help McCain improve the country if he's elected. To me that's what the passion's about, it's never been about "It's my guy or I quit".

That’s so intense but something tells me it’s not too far from the truth!

I thought about that the other day, I just had this feeling, if there is any truth to this The United States has truly lost herself, her soul too.

Thanks for sharing

To Senator Obama: Do not speak like a professor.

The majority of Americans have the comprehension skills of a 10th grader. Oral comprehension is much lower.

It is a cold, hard reality we have to face to win the election.

It is in the interest of America, the country we love, at stake. We have to play the game to win in the long run.

You are one of the 10th graders I was referring to.

And as a simpleton, you need to be held by the hand to see what is good for America.

It is not about the egocentric repugs or pumas anymore, it is for America.

I agree he could tone it down as much as he's able, but I think that this is who he is. In the end, I think his philosophy has been to win in the much longer run. With all the work he's doing to set up the democratic party to be in a position of power not just in this election cycle, but for many to come. It's risky, but win or lose, there will be many more democraticly elected mayors, sherriffs, state legislators, congressmen, etc. (I think I misspelled every one of those!). Anyway, in the long run I don't think it's in the interest of the country to try to be what he's not: an intelligent, passionate, partially-flawed man running for president.

Obama started losing this election when he would not take McCain on in town hall meetings.

He ran from the challenge of a 72 year old man... if you are going to do that... are you ready to lead?

That was a gift handed to him and he wimped out or his advisors did because he was up 15 points in the polls, they went on cruise control! DUH!

Now he would have to beg McCain to do one!

The article is dated JUN.. Its August and the Obama campaign said only about 3 weeks ago they would not do any town halls.

Now even if you were correct.. You make my point... The repugs if they did block the Town hall meetings.. thats not the perception in the public! The Repugs then won this issue.

McCain talks about Obama being affraid to face him in a Town Hall meeting constantly as do his staff. They won.

Where is the Obama response that educates me and the voters? Do you get it!

I read about this in a time article recently. It made good arguments, but I'd have to say that at the time it was proposed, he made the right choice to not do it. McCain couldn't buy publicity then and said he was going to run an honorable campaign. Now, McCain's getting all kinds of publicity, running a negative campaign, and Obama's in a catch 22.

I kind of agree though that it'd be interesting. Put McCain in the spot where HE's supposed to be the talented one, and where Obama's the one who is supposed to fair badly and see what happens.

Of course the religious forum recently was exactly that and McCain pulled that one off, so go figure.

Oh lord. I think this about the 7th breakdown from the bloggers. Let me see Iowagate, kitchensinkgate, Wrightgate, Bittergate, FISAgate, movingtothecentergate. Next up.... VPgate. And he is still winning by staying on message and fighting back alone. It is sad that he has still not won your trust. Stop believing the media and frame your own argument. Write to those stupid dems criticizing obama. For instance, this whole celebrity thing. Bloggers should have pushed the meme Barack is like Reagan with a brain but they chose to whine. That is what I told my dumb pub friends. Listen, he is not your daddy so get on with the business of growing up and constructively helping out the campaign. I know you have a clueless voter at school or work.

Maybe, just maybe, they are watching the polls, and the news is not good. I had a discussion a week or so ago with my significant other. I said I couldn't believe just how McCain appeared to be in this campaign.....that is not the picture of John McCain I have had since maybe 2000. I mean it looked like he had a stroke or something...bumbling idiot like, but not what I have seen from him in the years I have been watching him. I wondered, could this be an act? Could he be acting in such a way that the Democrats would dismiss him as an easy target? Could it be he was just waiting until the Democrats had their nominee, and then he would revert back to the John we have known, Could this just be an act to make the democratic party complacent? When I saw his performance at Saddle Rock this past w/e, I said d*mn. I called it right. Only time will tell, but I think you will see a stronger John McCain in the campaign from now on.

I am sorry but NO dumb pundit could convince me that John McCain looked good on Saturday. He looked like a nut on sedatives. He was nutty looking in 2000 but Bush was such a prick we didn't notice. Listen the real dummies always vote Republican so that vote is a wash. That is the 40-45% that McCain keeps getting. Obama is now leading in
Independents but losing Dems b/c they keep believing the media hype and freak out and cause more drama. That starts playing into the minds of the older lady Clinton supporters who think he can't win because Hillary said so. The convention should help solidify the base and excite them to feel included in the Obama campaign and help him win. Obama has been talking specifics for months but the media refuses to report it. Believe me if you are REALLY suffering, you are listening to his message and will vote for him. For the ones not really suffering we have to reach them. I hope Thursday is one hell of a speech.

The Obama campaign is floundering. I am not sure what the central message is anymore? He is losing support in his base because he has shifted the Right. The American public has NOT rewarded this shift - have they?

They will not reward his shift. People believed that Obama was a breath of fresh air - at the same time they KNEW that he was a "liberal". Yet he still received high marks.

Now that he has shifted he is losing momentum.

Great post! It is amazing to see how alarmed someone can get with one poll! Especially from a campaign that was such a long shot. But we have gotten pretty spoiled being in the lead, and many (myself included) weren't around when he was the long shot.

I agree though, he knows what he's doing, so it's okay to take a deep breath and relax. You're right, we should all make it a goal to at least talk to one undecided person (if we can find them), and at least try to convince them or provide them with some info.

It's incredible to me that anyone in the Democrat party would consider "not working so hard" on the campaign because they're disappointed in Barack. I get it, I've been disappointed for a while, but damn if that's going to get in my way from electing Democrats. Look, Bush (and McCain) are some of the worst republican candidates ever, and yet repubs aren't running from them - they'll do everything they can to get them elected. Because they believe in their party and it's principles (regardless of how goofy the standard-bearer is).

Democrats need that same focus and energy. The primary is over - what happened doesn't matter; Hillary doesn't matter; Barack's policy positions don't matter. He's our guy. Get him elected. Period. The other party is a gazillion times worse - anyone who doesn't understand that hasn't been paying attention.

We must stay focused on what's important. Destroy McCain's campaign. Make a complete fool of him. Plaster his flip-flops on every telephone pole in American. And do everything you can to get Democrats across the board in to office. If there's anything else on your agenda it does not matter until after November. Swallow your pride and work your butt off Thank you.

Gary

A lot of the people supporting Obama are NOT Democrats. Many are independents especially the younger voters. They were attracted to him because of his message and their perception that things need to be improved in this nation. He will hold them only as long as he appeals to a vision that change - i.e. reform is coming.

Well he is in a gun fight and right now is bringing a knife to it!

The facts are a 72 year old McBush is beating him! The fact is McCain now leads in projected electorial votes!

So you may be happy, but you are not likely to be happy in January when McCain is sworn in.

McCain has Obama's negatives up 8 point at a cost of 1 point to him.

The only good ADs I have seen are from private groups that only make the internet. The voters are not all going to YOU Tube or political blogs. The best AD on Energy and against McCain was from Paris Hilton!

He is not dealing with Lou Dobbs and lumping him in with RUSH and Hannity is killing him since DOBBs has been going after him.

The no drilling was foolish especially when the ban expires on Sept. 30th..

Because its not about Obama volunteers. Its about winning votes. Period. Nothing else matters. We must do what works to win the election. This isn't a feel-good exercise - its real politics and it gets dirty sometimes. If this is your first election, this is a good time to defer to your elders.

Our elders gave us 8 years of Bush. No thanks. There is more then one way to campaign, Obama has done a pretty good job of showing us how it can be done. We all have to pitch in to do our part, if it's something we truly believe in.

It almost sounds as if you'd be willing to use true republican techniques like rigging election machines, challanging any voters who look like they will vote for the other side, etc.

I didn't sign on for that.

I am heartsick to agree with the depressive timbre of being in the Obama camp & in this post.

Obama has been on the defensive or mute since before his trip abroad.

To allow that overseas triumph to be turned into a farce, was unacceptable. To let that "celebrity"
garbage go without a tongue lashing, had Barack looking defenseless, not above it all.

How could team Obama allow the Faith Forum to start with McCain in a hi-tech limo?

Where are the universal care, 16 months for troop homecoming, not sending jobs overseas,
HOPE, CHANGE thrusts? It is as if there is a faux candidate in Barack's place.

My personal & political hope is that this site will be celebrating the return of the Obama of
the early Primaries. Since he has been morphing, he has been dwarfing his brand &
advantage to win.

I pray if it is Biden, he can juice up Obama to be the bold, original that he inherently is.

Agreed, all you have to do is explain McCains healthcare plan... and he loses the election.

Has anyone heard Obama point out the problems.. a 4k credit to pay for the 20K healthcare you use to get from your employer before McCain? DUH?

Have you heard a speech that goes over , the stock market , the price of oil, the comodity deregulation, the devaluation of the Dollar, the loss of wealth, the drop in real wages.. the highest inflation rates in 26 years.... and who caused this! McBUSH... What about the loss of jobs and only 4 million created in 8 years... all low paying jobs!

Thats what his speech s/b talking about. great he hit back today.. but that was stilldefensive... he doe s not have mcCain expaining how he supprted a [president that did this to pour country... 5 trillion in new debt!

Outsourcing/loss of all MFG in this country.. cant even produce the bullets for our guns!

Where si that speech! mcCain you did this to our Country during your 26 years in Congress... from trade surplses to trade deficts.. from largest creditor nation to largest debto nation.... mc Cain YOU DID THIS.. it happened on your watch!

Actually, I have heard almost all those talking points in his speeches. Repeatedly. Go to his website and check out the last weeks worth. Every one of those points has been made.

I think your taking a shift in the polls as more then they are. McCain has gotten a ton of airtime recently for the negative attacks, and people have been listening to him. Just because the news focus is on him, doesn't mean that Obama's not giving those exact speeches. Coverage goes in cycles, it's not that big of a deal. Take a deep breath and do what you can to help. Just talk to one person a week and make the argument for Obama. If we all do that, then we will win.

The Celebrity ad was quite clever. How do you attack it without looking bitter or reinforing the idea. They did try but the more you say “I am not a Celebrity” the more it sticks.

Here’s a novel thought that an Obamaniac can’t get

He really was doing the celebrity thing in Berlin. It was the intuitive conclusion for a non-Obamaniac watching a huge foreign crowd showing up for a US politician. You just aren’t one so you can’t see that.

The truth was the non-Obamaniacs were all looking at the TV of Berlin going “Huh?WTF?”. The McCain people put that feeling in an ad. That feeling when you are watching crowds rush for Britney Spears or Paris Hilton and you think “Why?”

Negative campaigning works. The nastier, the more successful. Dems need to get into the pestilent ooze and mire just like the Reps do. If they jab, we come in with the knockout punch. You know what it takes to be POTUS? It takes brass balls!

0 needs to be a bit more prepared for debates too. He needs to be thinking about what they will ask and pre-think his answers. 0 always seems to be cought off guard by the questions asked as he needs to think about his answers so long while filling in the silences with "um"s.

It is not like he will be asked about the atmospheric composition of Saturn.

If he keeps this up his funding will disappear!

A 72 yeald old, D student who married his money , who is 5'7" tall is beating him! And beating him when he, his president and his party has made a mess of this country!

I have not heard one person point out McCain read his Georgia history from Wikeapedia on TV! Dam the internet is wonderful, but your missing 50% of the voters by relying on it! BUSH has a 25% favarable rating!

As someone Air America today pointed out, the most important time in a campaign are the last six weeks. In the last six weeks Obama will have his VP candidate and that person can go on the attack against Grandpappy McSame. Look how Obama was able to shame Grandpappy today in front of the VFW without actually attacking him. Obama can wield a scalpel in such a way that an opponent won't realize he's been sliced until he faints from the blood loss.

RRonin: As someone Air America today pointed out....

How would SuperDems who have courted every loser but Bill Clinton know what to do?

AirAmerica=BrainTrust?

How are they doing at sweeping the nation over there?

I am very tired of hearing Obama remind us of "John McCain's honorable service to our country." First of all it's not as honorable as he claims. And secondly, who gives a crap! Obama should be tougher on McCain. That is, if he wants to win. Stop kissing his ass with the "honorable service" bunk.

That is called setting up the "but"

Of course you could just start right in with attacking him and look desparate and mean. You are right that is better...

Progressive bloggers,

The democrats are its own worse enemy. It is so very hard for you to see a brilliant man like Obama. He beat Hillary without drama and dirty politics - he can beat McCain. You forget, this man is about change. You are part of the same old politics. Give him a break. Encourage him and in the meantime, take points.

Thank you.

"Progressive" pundits will pick and nitpick at Obama until there's nothing left. They have completely lost all sense of the big picture. Except Frank Rich. Who wisely reminded us all over the weekend that no one is paying any attention to McCain. Not even the so-called progressives. "Liberal" bloggers and radio hosts would rather comb over every little crook of Barack's finger, just like the neo cons, and criticize and scold and whine. It's ridiculous. Fortunately, the majority of the country has too much sense to listen to these people.

You better pray that is so. I watch CBS and NBC evening news just to see what is being said. It is ALL about John. Any coverage of Obama is almost an after thought.

I heard Mark Levin reading from "The Audacity of Hope" and it pretty much sounds like communism to hear him tell it. He gave page numbers too. Stuff that was pretty much saying whatever we need we can tax the upper class for and feel it is completely justified.

Little hard to take all that bluster off the shelves now that he is a national candidate. Sounds wonderful to the far left..the general population...not so much down with it.

So much for vetting in the dem party. (For example see John Edwards)

Yes and look what happened when she turned negative!

After she turned negative, she won the majority of the contests. If she had gone negative sooner... Obama would not likely be the nominee. She was a Democrat and her negative attacks are nothing compared to what the repugs are dishing out...

Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Wolfson and the PUMA's are still waiting for that big Obama mis-step before the convention so that they can attempt their final swope down on the nomination. This roll-call business is not all show.

The criticism by the "progressives" might have some value, but we won' know that until after the convention when Obama no longer has to fight a rear-guard action from his own alleged supporters. Why can't folks just consider the possibility that a campaign astute enough to take out the Clintons can also take out McCain and the Republicans in this, of all years? Obama throwing warm-up is not Obama pitching the game.

Since 1960, I have never seen a Democratic presidential candidate face such carping from so many quarters within his own party at any time in the primary or nomination process. Why do you think that is?

LeeScho: Why do you think that is?

It is the same reason there are superdelegates. The general far left of the party will nominate their dream candidate like McGovern who is unacceptable for the mainstream and run way below the generic ticket.

Since it is a dem year some people from the center left (me) are upset that they overshot on the issues thinking they didn’t have to concede anything to the center like drilling our own oil and then LIE about the reasons and the public would eat sh*tburgers on anything they wanted because they “can’t” vote republican. So much for “can’t”

Drill Here, Drill now. No Communism.

Dems for McCain08’

Progressive bloggers: GET A GRIP. Believe it or not, Obama and his team are smarter than you are. That is why they are running an historic campaign and you are uh... blogging. The ones that don't have any balls are YOU. Now shut up and start doing something constructive.

The LA Times poll today shows Obama dropping like a rock since July. He's on the defensive and that's a recipe for a loss. He's beginning to look like Kerry.

McCain is already handing him his butt in Missouri, he's got radio and tv spots talking about how he'll be taxing families making more than 48,000 a year, how he'll destroy the economy, ect. I know Missouri and hillbillies eat that crap up.

Obama better start running with ball and get on the offensive or he'll get his butt kicked all over the country. The blogger's are right Obama needs to stop acting like girlie man or he'll get gis can kicked.

"...Obama and his team are smarter than you are...."

Oh? And you know this how? Obama's dramatic rise in national polls? His devastating deconstructions of McCain's policy proposals?

In 2000 another "historic" campaign was run. A Jew was actually runnng for vice president.

Maybe *YOU* need to put your picture of Obama away, and *RELEASE YOUR GRIP* on your "prayer stick".

And in 2000 the ones that voted for Bush were right? .....would you dare answer that question?

I rest my case. Its obvious that Bush was a bad choice looking back. So what you are saying is we SHOULD vote for the "historic" candidate considering the last time it happened we made a bad choice right?
