Update: Keith Olbermann had Rachel Maddow on "Countdown" Tuesday night to celebrate and discuss the news. In the clip, Rachel said that the show will discuss politics and weird news — like stories on the Iraqi national soccer team and domestic crimes committed by naked men — and that she will remain on Air America.

Watch below:

Original Post: Rachel Maddow will replace Dan Abrams as host of the 9PM hour on MSNBC, the New York Times' Bill Carter reports. Just last month in a Times article by Jacques Steinberg, MSNBC president Phil Griffin declared Maddow "at the top" of a "very short list" for those who should have their own show, though at the time he said he "[didn't] know when" that would be. As Carter reports, the final stretch of the 2008 election season will be Maddow's debut as the host of her own MSNBC show:

Just in time for the closing rush of the presidential election, MSNBC is shaking up its prime-time programming lineup, removing the long-time host -- and one-time general manager of the network -- Dan Abrams from his 9 p.m. program and replacing him with Rachel Maddow, who has emerged as a favored political commentator for the all-news cable channel.

The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.

MSNBC is highlighting the date, 9/8/08, connecting it to the start of the Olympics on 8/8/08, as a way to signal what the network's president, Phil Griffin, said "will be the final leg of the political race this year." He added, "We making that Rachel's debut."

Mr. Abrams, who is well liked at MSNBC, is expected to remain at both that network and at NBC News, where he is the chief legal correspondent. He will also serve as an anchor during some of MSNBC's daytime coverage, as well as a substitute host on NBC's "Today" show, Mr. Griffin said.

The last broadcast of Abrams' "Verdict" will air Thursday.

Abrams, the network's former General Manager, told the Times that he understood the decision.

"Putting my general manager's hat back on, considering where the network is right now, it is actually the right call," he said.

Almost immediately, Keith Olbermann took to DailyKos to celebrate the news, brag about his involvement in the decision — "Yes, I had something to do with it," he wrote — and remind readers that though Maddow's rise at the network was quick ("less than five months between first paid appearance and own show"), his was quicker ("I believe I still hold the MSNBC record: I came back to guest host for three days in 2003 and 39 days later I had a contract to do the 8 PM show.").

Countdown with Keith Olberman is the only show I watch on MSNBC. Now I have Rachel to watch. Go Rachel. It seems as though nothing is worth watching on MSNBC. I do not watch Meet the Press now that Tim Russet is no longer there. The guy (Tim) was one in a million and oh how I miss him.

She comes across as very genuine and authentic. She is going far. A very likeable TV personality. This is definitely a "Season Pass" with Tivo!!! And yeah, I could see her as host on Meet the Press!!! Go Rachel!!! We love you!!

How many of those crispy blonds and stuffed shirts at FOX Noise are Rhodes Scholars with a Doctorate in Political Science?

Just read a great article in The Nation about Rachel Maddow. I was surprised to find out how accomplished she is. I wonder how many viewers know she has a Ph.D., was a Rhodes Scholar, and has a long history of political activism. I daresay that alone sets her apart from the vast majority of pundits.

Good for you Rachel. Please don't let it go to your head like Keith. He was terrific until he began thinking he was Murrow or Sevareid. Tell Keith Obie he talks too fast and should drop the hubris.

I am suffering withdrawal pangs from Morning Joe. I need my fix and hope he is back next week. Scarborough is the one Republican I can disagree with yet trust. He's fair and has a great intellect. Also he can actually think for himself and is willing to hear all sides. Mika and Willy help make his show fun and the informal format with variety of guests can't be beat. Hope MSNBC brings back MORNING JOE.

HEAR HEAR, It has been the longest two weeks having to find something to watch in the mornings, although sometimes Joe gets on my last nerve, overall I really enjoy the show.

I even decided to watch Imus on the RFD network,, then found that even he isn't on during that time slot. I just don't think MSNBC had to air the Olympics at 5:00 in the morning. Why couldn't they just say that they are giving the entire panel a couple of weeks off. Joe is out enough and I enjoy Mika and Willy, and having to watch CNN on about a 10 minute loop and what I guess they think passes for "banter", I have never looked so forward to a show coming back on.

I have watched a little of the Olympics, not much, but why do they have to shove it down our throats?

Seriously, how many people are going to sit down at 5 a.m. and become in engrossed in beach volley ball?

Why can't MSNBC see that both Rachel and Dan have devoted audiences that would love to see BOTH of them along with my idol, Mr. Keith - together in whatever order, EACH and EVERY NIght? Hey Boyz, why can't you take that prison cr*p off to make room? Dan, Rachel and Keith make a terrific trio in the way they present current events.

This is good for her because she constantly handed Joe Scarborough his behind every time they met. It's about time that someone with more intelligence than ego has their own show.

Great. Now who will replace Olberman? He's turned into a left wing cartoon on O'Reilly. At least Maddow is bright, even handed and doesn't think the news is about her.
Now can we find some real journalists out there? Are there any left?

What? Are you kidding? Keith Olberman is the best thing to happen to TV. I hope he never leaves. As a matter of a fact he should debate head to head with Hannity and 'Bill-O the Clown'. ..
