I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sebelius

Speculation abounds these days as to whom, exactly, Barack Obama will choose as a vice presidential candidate. The secrecy that surrounds the process makes predictions the political equivalent of blind darts. But one thing can be tangibly gleaned: which potential candidate is receiving the preponderance of coverage.

A curious aspect of the recent VP go-around has been the relatively scant attention paid towards Kathleen Sebelius. The Kansas Governor once was seen as a frontrunner for the spot. She was the gubernatorial compliment to Obama's new generation, Washington outsider message. But while her close relationship to the presumptive Democratic nominee has always made Sebelius -- at the very least -- a viable option, confidence in that choice has waned. Compared to other candidates, Sebelius has not been subjected to intense speculation. (On Tuesday, for example, Bloomberg News delved deep into the lobbying ties of Evan Bayh's wife.)

What can tea leaf readers make of this? On the most direct level, the silence suggests nothing more than that Sebelius is highly disciplined and not prone to unnecessary chatter or drama.

"I would definitely say that she, to her credit, is somebody who doesn't leak, and I think that there is probably a good shared mindset with the Obama team on that front," said a Democratic official in Kansas. "I'm almost sure she is still in the running and I think it is to the credit of the Chicago team, because their mores aren't guided by beltway chatter."

Indeed, the source adds, Sebelius' low national profile could be attributed to a press corps that is more familiar and comfortable reporting on Washington figures like Joe Biden or Bayh. Another Kansas official told the Huffington Post that a major national political reporter was still trying to figure out whether Sebelius was considered a progressive or a centrist within her own state. (For the record, she is regarded primarily as a principled progressive who has built consensus rather than tacked towards the middle.)

And yet, conventional wisdom suggests the opposite. The absence of serious buzz around Sebelius seems, observers say, reflective of a vice presidential candidacy that never really left the ground and is now viewed as a poor choice in such a tight race.

"Her strength is mostly symbolic, as a blue governor in a red state," said Bird Loomis, a political science professor at the University of Kansas who has advised Sebelius in the past. "A lot of it is her personal relationship with Obama. And I think if Obama was ahead by ten points right now he might choose Kathleen. But in a two-point race I don't see how you give up a major political card [like a more dynamic pick] to play."

If that's the case, it represents a somewhat paradoxical political development. Several months into the general election, the major battles being waged are over economic policy and the woman vote. Sebelius, a widely respected administrator and one of the nation's most prominent female figures would, on the surface, seem well equipped to charge into that breach.

But outside factors have been at play. Several sources, stating the obvious, argued bluntly that the press and possibly Obama have ruled out Sebelius strictly because of the backlash her nomination would engender among Hillary Clinton supporters. "There is one reason," said a source close to Clinton. "And that's: 'no woman but Hillary.'" Others have argued that Obama's primary need right now is someone with foreign policy gravitas or geographic symbolism.

"A lot of it is pretty sophisticated, good reporters look at this and say, 'I know she has been named, but honestly, what does she bring to the ticket?' said Loomis. "And once they look they don't find that much politically in terms of her helping Obama. She doesn't have the foreign policy or military expertise and she doesn't come from a key state."

In the end, all this could be a moot point. Obama is expected to make his selection in a matter of days and few beyond the most inner circle of his staff know who he'll choose. But should Sebelius get the nod it would, in a way, be a remarkable political feat -- a vice presidential selection process that was navigated with a relatively low amount of speculation and even less expectation.

I personally like Kathleen Sebelius a lot, but my real choice for Obama's VP is Caroline Kennedy. She is a great role model for women and a very smart cookie who has stayed out of the political limelight. She has elected to keep her life out of the public mainstream. But can you even imagine in your wildest dreams how many voters would go for an Obama-Kennedy ticket? They would sweep to victory in a landslide. I only hope Obama reads this and stops to think what is best for the country. If he does, he will select this terrific woman as his running mate.

Hillary and her feminist minions squashed any possibility of that! Now how's that for standing up for Women's Rights. Guess the only woman that matters is Hillary "I Ran a Disastrous Campaign and Blamed Everyone But Myself" Clinton.

Meant to say "so-called feminist" because true feminists would not have torpedoed a qualified woman's chance like they have.

"so-called" is correct....

Does anyone remember the democratic response to the State of the Union? She was incredibly boring, passive, and weak. Definitely not inspiring and lacks any passion.....a sure loser for the democratic party. She makes Kerry seem exciting.

So? What about Bill Clinton's keynote address at the 1988 convention? That was awful. But he learned from his mistake. I'm sure Sebelius can to.

She/we do not have four years for her to improve her skills.

"Let me tell you first what I won't do: I won't hand over my energy policy to my vice president and not know necessarily what he's doing,"

The above is a quote from Senator Obama's remarks yesterday in NC. If one were to conclude from this remark that Obama definitely was thinking VP in the context of energy, then, who is the person most likely to fit that profile? Seems to add some validity to my prediction from yesterday that Al Gore is the one but let me add that I'm just guessing like all the rest of you. Al Gore's involvement in the global warming thing - which is linked to the energy issue - sure fits into yesterday's quote. By the way I think Gore would be an excellent pick. It provides him with a chance at redemption from 2000, the position of VP (working the energy issues) matches Gore's current passion, and most likely would lead to a victory in FL and OH.

As much as I delight in your prediction, ...

Obama's mocking McCain. McCain said he'd pick experts from various fields for his VP and cabinet because he lacks knowledge in every area except military and foreign policy; and he'd allow t h e m to run those areas -- a hands off approach.

Only soap opera addicted drama queens could possibly believe that Senator Hillary Clinton is more qualified to serve as Vice President than Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Sen. Clinton brings with her baggage, scandals, and dirty politics which equate to ENTERTAINMENT. Whereas, Gov. Sebelius is viewed as responsible, disciplined, and ethical.

Sen. Clinton couldn't manage her primary campaign; Gov. Sebelius manages a State.
Sen. Clinton's campaign is s t i l l almost $21 MILLION in debt and she's using the Democratic National Convention, of all places, to try to retire it. Wherein, Gov. Sebelius eliminated a $1.1 BILLION state debt waiting for her when she took office -- something the US really needs, btw.

If you're citing "experience" among Sen. Clinton's qualifications, yes, she was elected in New York in 2000. Yet, Sebelius was elected in Kansas in 1986. I'll concede to you, however, that Hillary is a year older than Kathleen.

I honestly could have supported Hillary's political ambition if she didn't show herself as being so "imcompetent" -- despite her support of the Iraq war. But now, no way; I don't want another GWB. And I'd seriously question Obama's judgement if he chose her as his running mate.

To anyone who'd really scream "no woman but Hillary," as this article claims, please examine your true motives.

What happened to Sebelius? Nothing. That's the point. She's boring and would be an uninspired choice for VP.

Choose a woman and the Hillary supporters will have their panties wadded around their necks, cut their flesh with razor blades, flog themselves with their slacks' belts and generally go hog wild. As for the notion that Obama is a sexist - well just put that one to rest. No man who is a sexist has a wife as strong as Michelle Obama.

Yes, yes, yes, run a sexist campaign and then blaim Hillary supporters. See NOW's letter on this point, which says that he should be considering a number of women. Only in a sexist society are we able to consider one woman and one woman only. After all, they reason, because Edwards is not in consideration, Obama's camp does not rule out all white men. I suspect Sebellius never was a candidate because, as Barack likes to say, he's looking for someone he feels "comfortable" with, and I suspect -- but I hope I'm wrong -- that that will be a conservative white guy, perhaps with an anti-choice record.

Funny that the same person that you surmise Obama might be "comfortable" with - a conservative white guy with an anti-choice record - is the same guy that so many "NObama" Democratic Party defectors will be voting for in McCain.

It will be Biden - yes, a white dude, but still a great choice in my opinion.

I personally prefer Sebelius - I'm sorry that so many people feel she's too boring, you know, none of the exciting Clinton drama and baggage that Hillary would bring to the campaign by the freightload. Sebelius is instead an amazing woman whose political success is largely self-made and who, when asked to make a difficult decision or pursue a controversial agenda, doesn't have to first ask her spouse as we've all now heard Hillary did so many times during her campaign, including the "I don't know, ask Bill" decision on the 3am ad.

Obama is not stupid.

If you really want to see the democratic party divided and fractured than select Governor Sebelius as VP instead of Hillary.

Personally I would not consider either one.

Obama/Clark

For a return to sanity in government.

LillianB hit it right on the head and something I've been screaming about for weeks. Hillary was more interested that there was only ONE woman capable of running the country when there are strong, capable women who are doing great jobs all over America grooming themselves as we speak . To NOT chose Kathleen BECAUSE she is a woman is SUCH discrimination. There is certainly more than one woman capable and we all should be examining ALL the candidates- not just the males and Hillary.

I have nothing against Gov. Sebelius at all, except the only downfall I see is that it would be a ticket of 'inexperience'. I think O would fare better (with older folks especially) if he chose Biden. He's old, has experience and is more well known from the debates and his long term in the Senate. Bush was a Governor and I don't think that worked out too well. In any case, I'm in the column of those who really don't care who he picks, as long as he wins.

it would be a breath of fresh air if Obama finally showed some backbone and chose Sebelius if she has the qualifications he's looking for.

did anyone watch Bill Maher on Larry King last night, he was spot on about Obama becoming just another Kerry, Gore caving into the Repubs on FISA, oil drilling, faith-based nonsense programs and his horrible wishy-washy Rick Warren stuttering/sputtering performance on progressive/women issues.

He would restore my respect for him if he stood up to the Clinton's and picked Sebelius.
he needs to join a Toastmaster's Club and learn how to speak in debates.

If you think about it, nothing would serve to get rid of the Clintons once and for all, more than Obama picking Sebelius. It would be like saying, "That's right, Bill and Hillary, your day is over."

She has executive experience because she actually managed the budgets of a state which is normally Republican. She won twice. It is not something to take for granted. She is one of the best governors. She looks determined but not someone who would walk on corpses.
Why not?
Maybe some women want to stay loyal to Clinton. But many will just want a woman. Period. Imagine if Obama does not pick a woman, but McCain does! The women will surely go for McCain.
