Cindy McCain Mother Teresa Story Fabricated

Gilding the lily is nothing new to politics. From the 1840s when William Henry Harrison claimed to have been born in a log cabin (it was actually a Virginia plantation) to Ronald Reagan's reminiscing about flying over Germany in World War II (he did, but only in a movie), politicians have taken perfectly good stories and embellished them.

The latest embellishments come from the McCain camp. Cindy McCain has repeatedly referred to herself as an "only child." This week came news that she actually has two half sisters, although apparently she had very little contact with them.

The McCain campaign had also put out the story that Mother Teresa "convinced" Cindy to bring home two orphans from Bangladesh in 1991.

Mrs. McCain, it turns out, never met Mother Teresa. (Once contacted by the Monitor, the campaign revised the story on its website.)

This is just one more instance of not being able to trust anything said or written by a McCain. However, the real lack of trust with Sen McCain on this issue is deeper for me. I, like the Senator am an adoptive parent. My daughter is of Haition descent, my wife and I are caucasian so we can identify with the McCains in that way also.

Here is my problem and what should be a problem for every parent. Lets remember how Bush and Rove shamlessly attacked what was an unselfish and loving act by the McCains. I know that for me I would find it an unforgivable act for anyone to attack my daughter, especially on the issue of race. I would think that John & Cindy McCain would also. But after seeing the bear hugs that he gave Bush, the groveling for his blessing after winning the nomination and using Rove's protege to run his campaign I guess I am wrong. He is obviously willing to "throw his daughter under the bus" to win an election.

My question is this: If McCain can't be trusted to protect his own child why should we believe he would protect any of ours?

Afterall Cindy McCain is a woman who cheated with a married man, while he was still living at homw with his first wife.
Cindy McCain is a woman who has said over and over that she is an only child, NOW we find out that she has two sisters.

The article suggests that perhaps the exaggeration in her story was the result of a "faulty memory." WTF?!?!? How faulty would your memory have to be for you to forget whether you had met Mother Theresa?!?!?

The nuns at the orphanage founded by Mother Teresa did implore Cindy McCain to get those two baby girls to America, where they could have the series of surgeries they needed. Both girls were adopted (one by the McCains), and both are healthy and attending high school in Phoenix.

The campaign should have more careful about the details of the story, but it's a good thing that those baby girls were able to get the health care they needed.

While the lies are "good" for his daughters the rest of us would like truth.
How you run your campaign is how you will govern.
I'm not sure we need another revisionist president.
The little lies that are for no real reason are the best predictors of dis-honest behavior on the big issues.

It's going to boil down to whether the voters in this country want a self-made man, very brilliant, preferring negotiations to war if such can be prevented; pro-choice; admired throughout the world and wanting to draw down from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. A soother in lieu of a war hawk. Obama.

Of we can go the way of John McCain: bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran, Russia and anyone else that he might fancy in his neocon zeal for combat; admittedly knows nothing about the economy; is even buckling on his promise to allow abortions for rape victims, etc.

The USA needs to think hard in this election - past race or creed. This world needs time to lick its wounds and heal from the damage the Bush gang has inflicted.
