WASHINGTON — Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic Party's vice presidential candidate in 2000 and now an independent who is one of John McCain's strongest supporters, will speak at the Republican National Convention, an official said.

Lieberman will deliver a speech when Republicans gather in St. Paul, Minn., to nominate McCain for president, a party official told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The official requested anonymity because a formal announcement had yet to be made.

Asked during a visit to Georgia whether he would be speaking at the convention, Lieberman smiled and said: "it's quite possible, but I'll let them announce it."

Lieberman, 66, caucuses with Senate Democrats, though has been a strong supporter of the Iraq war and is a staunch backer of McCain's presidential bid, traveling often with the Arizona senator and campaigning on his behalf during the GOP primary in states like Florida that have large numbers of Jewish voters.

As he weighs potential running mates, McCain is believed to be seriously considering choosing Lieberman, whom he counts among his closest friends, for the GOP ticket. Lieberman's convention speaking slot doesn't indicate either way whether McCain ultimately will choose his friend for the No. 2 slot.

Republican officials say top McCain advisers have been reaching out to big donors and high-profile delegates in key states to gauge the impact of picking an abortion-rights supporter like Lieberman. Conservative activists, in turn, are waging an increasingly vocal campaign against the move, raising the prospect of acrimony at the convention.

There's also lingering questions of whether Republican National Committee rules would allow someone who is not registered as a Republican to be the vice presidential nominee, or whether they would need to be changed _ a process that could incite a right-flank revolt.

Some Republicans speculate that Lieberman's name simply is being floated to make a Republican abortion-rights backer, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, seem more acceptable to conservatives. Ridge, too, is believed to be under serious consideration, along with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, both Republicans and abortion-rights opponents.

As Al Gore's running mate in 2000, Lieberman became the first Jewish vice presidential nominee. His campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 failed.

After a surprising loss to Ned Lamont in Connecticut's 2006 Senate primary, Lieberman defied Democratic leaders and ran as an independent in the general election. Top Democrats backed Lamont, a political newcomer, and Lieberman won support from the GOP, including his friend McCain.

Lieberman tends to vote with Democrats on most issues and is a longtime supporter of abortion rights, a stance that would rankle conservatives if he were McCain's running mate.

Not only has Lieberman campaigned for McCain, he has criticized Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Senate Democrats have been tolerant of his political straddling because he holds their slim political majority in his hands.

Lieberman departed Tuesday for a trip to the Republic of Georgia, Poland and the Ukraine. He is expected to return to Washington on Thursday night.

In 2004, former Sen. Zell Miller, a Georgia Democrat, praised President Bush and mocked the Democratic ticket as weak on defense in a speech at the GOP's national convention.

Good lawd, is anyone listening to Mc Nasty try to address the health care crisis on CNN?

He just can't think on his feet, at all.

That's why his performance at Saddleback caused many to "back this train up."

It was a rehearsed performance that's all it was. He was supposed to answer questions and he gave bits and pieces of his campaign speeches and old war stories. That will not cut it in the real debates.

That's because the crazies do not care about health care, all they care about are the "Three G's".

When McBush is not giving canned talking points and telling old war stories he is lost. The only reason he had quick answers at Saddleback was because the forum was limited to issues he could use his canned responses. When talking about the economy, health care, veterans issue or the details about anything he is lost. Believe me with the real debates come around he will be exposed.

Bringing back the draft is a Dem (and dumb) idea.

Rep. Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y., introduced the legislation in January 2003. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C., pushed a similar bill in the Senate.

Not strictly on topic, but my biggest laugh of the campaign so far is the McCain yammering about O being so ambitious that he puts his desire to be POTUS above principle.

OK, Do this little exercise. Think back on the R primary in S Carolina where the Bush people ran that scurrulous campaign against McCain--the illegitimate black child, how pretty that was. Now picture McCain hugging Bush. Now ask yourself for a more perfect example of naked ambition, the willingness to do ANYTHING to be POTUS, on display.

LOL

McBush wrote in his own book that he was not running because had a great vision for this country or because he thought he could change the country. He said explicitly he was running out of ambition. he said this in 2002. I'll try to find the quote.

further lol, he did the voicings for the "tape" of the book, so can HEAR him say outrightly such "ambition" was indeed something he embraced !!!
As to Joe and John, think what would be appropos, just as the righties mischieviously inerjected themselves ala claiming to be supportive of Clinton and egging that whole fracas on and on, think proper payback would be to ENCOURAGE John to take Joe as HIS VP...that would be truly "terrific" , as "his" base core conservatives would become unconsolably hurumphed and abandoned him for sure.
ALso think more attention to the detail of story played at the "Forum" , the one of the "cross in the dirt" should indeed be scrutenyzed and further questioned...and if done respectfully--yes there is a way to do so, think McC would once again hang himself. This "free pass" biz due to his POW status that seemingly makes it unconcienciable to question him about ANYTHING ..is repuslvely repugnant and is even used for his "moral failure" of not abiding by his marriage vows when he played outside with his first wife, ditching her and even in the intervening years with Cindy !! NONSENSE, vows and sacred family values/trust on display but given a pass cuz POW ????REALITY CHECK TIME !!1

Here's the quote you're looking for:

"I didn't decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I'd had the ambition for a long time"

Cafferty has said it the best.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/18/cafferty.mccain/

" Commentary: Is McCain another George W. Bush?

John McCain graduated 894th in a class of 899 at the Nav al Academy at Annapolis. His father and grandfather were four star admirals in the Navy. Some have suggested that might have played a role in McCain being admitted. His academic record was awful. And it shows over and over again whenever McCain is called upon to think on his feet...

...I am sick and tired of the president of the United States embarrassing me. The world we live in is too complex to entrust it to someone else whose idea of intellectual curiosity and grasp of foreign policy issues is to tell us he can look into Vladimir Putin's eyes and see into his soul."

He (Bush) will leave office with the country $10 trillion in debt, fighting two wars, our international reputation in shambles, our government cloaked in secrecy and suspicion that his entire presidency has been a litany of broken laws and promises, our citizens' faith in our own country ripped to shreds. Yet Bush goes bumbling along, grinning and spewing moronic one-liners, as though nobody understands what a colossal failure he has been.

I fear to the depth of my being that John McCain is just like him."

Call me Cassandra. I have been posting for more than a month that John would pick Joe. Actually, he can't get along without him. In the past, I have referred to them as the Bombsey Twins or the Boobsey Twins.....that hasn't changed either. The good news is that this should unite Democrats. Think of the SCOTUS appointments. Think of the bombs falling on Iran. Think of economic and moral bankruptcy. Think of Bibi telling us when to push the big red button.

I would love M to pick Joe L. The right wing would go nuts (well, more so). Joe's position re pro choice would reinforce the right's suspicion that McC isn't one of them (this despite the rumored 666 tattoo on the back of his head, but I digress).

The other plus would be all the old white guy schtick from Steward et al.

Lieberman, though pro-choice, should not be confused with a progressive candidate. He is a strong proponent of bombing Iran, which would send the Middle East's shaky stability to kingdom come, as well as send the price oil to $200/barrel overnight. And that's only one example of his lunacy.

If he and McCain post together and win the presidential ticket, we would be in for a dark 4 years, with consequences worse than what W himself has wrought.

Lets face it, it was the crossed over GOPers who kept him in the Senate, they did NOT vote for their candidate but Joe and saw it as an opportunity to "put it" to the Dems...should have been another warning sign heeded for many similars did so claiming to support Hillary for mischief making purposes as well...but come the general election/selection would never have voted FOR her but quite against her in droves.
When listening up to tALL of the nonsense, am almost of mind that perhaps would be a great thing if Mcc did indeed get the title and the GOPS get saddled with attempting to clean up after Bush, not sure WE THE PEOPLE would fare very well, and could bring the nation to a rude end as well but if the people/voters have NOT paid attention during these Bushelrized years, if they have NOT learned the harsh lessons that are so quite obvious, well, then perhaps they deserve a continuation dow the very obnoxious path..It is important election/selection come November...going to really be a determiner in more ways than one or two.
