In this Aug. 13, 2008 file photo, Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., left, and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., share a laugh while speaking to reporters during a news conference in Birmingham, Mich. A Republican official tells The Associated Press that Lieberman will be speaking at the Republican National Convention. The GOP official said Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, that Lieberman would deliver a speech as Republicans gathered in St. Paul to nominate John McCain for president. The official requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to make an announcement. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer, File)

WASHINGTON — Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will give the keynote address at the Republican National Convention next month and Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Lieberman also will take center stage at the GOP gathering.

John McCain's vanquished Republican primary rivals _ and a slew of potential McCain running mates _ also have speaking roles at the four-day gathering in St. Paul, Minn.

President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, first lady Laura Bush, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lieberman, who was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000 and is said to be under consideration for the same role with McCain, will open the convention on Monday, Sept. 1, with speeches that focus on service.

The subsequent days will focus on reform, prosperity and peace.

Giuliani, the two-term mayor who led New York through the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, will deliver his spotlight speech on Tuesday night. He ran for president this year but failed to win even one delegate, much less a state. He withdrew after a crushing loss in Florida, endorsed McCain the next day and has since campaigned for McCain.

Most of McCain's other former primary rivals will speak, including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, ex-Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who also is mentioned as a potential vice presidential candidates.

At least eight others whose names have been mentioned as potential running mates also are to address the convention, including governors Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Charlie Crist of Florida, Sarah Palin of Alaska, Jon Huntsman of Utah, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana; former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge; Meg Whitman, the former chief executive and president of eBay, and Carly Fiorina, the former chairwoman and chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Co.

McCain's vice presidential candidate is scheduled to speak on the third night of the convention, the same night McCain's wife, Cindy, will give her address. McCain will accept the nomination on the final night.

The announcement of speaking slots is in no way an indication of who will _ or won't _ make it onto the ticket; it's possible the campaign will rearrange the schedule once McCain makes his choice known. It's also possible McCain will chose someone not frequently mentioned.

The decision to schedule an address by Lieberman, the 66-year-old independent from Connecticut who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, recalls 2004 when former Sen. Zell Miller, a Georgia Democrat, spoke to the GOP convention.

Miller criticized the Democratic ticket as weak on defense, but Lieberman said that's not his intention.

"I'm going to the Republican convention not to attack the Democratic candidate, but to explain to the American people why I support John McCain," Lieberman told the Associated Press in Tbilisi, capital of the Republic of Georgia. "Sen. McCain asked me to do it, and I strongly support him."

"Our convention will showcase a cross-section of leaders who will highlight John McCain's long commitment to putting our country first _ before self-interest or politics," McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said in a statement that announced the speakers along with the meeting's "Country First" theme.

PERFECT ! Giuliani is a total flamout! He couldn't even win Florida in the primary. The Republican convention will be such a joke - a bunch of lightweights, a couple of me-toos, a whiney sounding traitor, and an old warmonger beaten up twice in the last 8 years. Check your local listings - there must be something else on!

Not a snowball's chance I'll ever compare his charisma to the Gipper!

He was just on CNN lambasting BHO for going to Iraq in 900 days +/-
and not giving The Surge a reach around.

Great...nothing SCREAMS SUCCESS like a speech from the losing candidate that spent 50 million dollars to gain one delegate! I would laugh at this but it isn't worth my effort. Guliani not even a joke!

As compared to kissing the butt of a losing candidate who spent 250 million and did a scorched earth retreat --- and then who sent her brother (Tony -- the one who helped arrange pardons for drug dealers) to meet with McCain's advisor taking a fundraiser with him??? Read that story here on Huffpo.

The Clintons are going to do everything they can to grease the skids on Obama--that was evident from the letters she sent out to supporters about what to do with her general election campaign warchest--keeping it for the 2012 primary.

She will do everything behind the scenes to sabotage Obama - and this time she got caught--wonder how many other meetings have been taking place?

She probably sent Mark Penn straight to McCain and had him help draft those mysterious emails that are circulating by the millions in this country (remember they originated in 2006 and 2007 and seem to support Penn's strategy to paint him as "foreign"). Limbaugh actually came out and said that the Clinton campaign had come to him and other media with the Wright stuff.

I want to believe in the intelligence of the American people--but I will never underestimate the power of ignorance and scare tactics used by the GOP and Murdock to swing an election.

The theme is "Country First" What a joke, it has been County LAST for almost 8 years now. Oh, wait, did they happen to mention WHICH country? Was it Iraq? That seems to be where all the money is going to rebuild, plus bribes.
