Biden's Son Going To Iraq

As Sen. Barack Obama closes in on his running mate pick, one prospect with clear momentum is Sen. Joseph Biden Jr.

Even difficult news for the Delaware Democrat personally has added a compelling twist to his case. On Oct. 3, Biden's son, Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III, will be deployed to Iraq.

"I don't want him going," Biden told an Iowa state fair crowd a year ago, when, as a presidential candidate himself, he learned that his son's unit would be deployed at some point in 2008. "But I don't want my grandsons or granddaughters going back in 15 years. So how we leave makes a big difference."

OK, everybody out there -- the same Senator BIDEN who has a son being imminently deployed is the same Senator Biden who the media took every opportunity to skewer, and the same Senator Biden who the DNC allowed to be ignored during the debates (along with the other actually qualified candidates), and the same Senator Biden who co-wrote the Iraq Senate Resolution THAT BARAK OBAMBA DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO SHOW UP TO VOTE ON, and the same Senator Biden that SHOULD BE OUR NOMINEE.

WE as a country sufferred a loss in the pre-mature end to his presidential campaign, a loss that brought me to tears back in January... and I fervently hope that there are no more losses, either by or regarding Senator Biden, one of the best, smartest, and worthy public servants we have in this country.

If Joe BIDEN is not VP or Secy of State, then the Democrats nominated an idiot (AGAIN).

Senator Biden has many good qualities and has made many contributions. However, if he is neither VP nor Secretary of State under Obama we will still be blessed with a wonderful President!

Yes, and sadly if he gets the nod it is for the wrong positon on the ticket. He is far superior to Obama and was my first choice. I felt that the media in the debates torpedoed him and they and the DNC had a vested interest for reasons yet to be discovered to push Obama long before Super Tuesday. Biden would be the good mirror image of Dick Cheney if he is named.

What this boils down to is another soldier is going to Iraq who may or may not come home. Being the son of a politician, he is a rare breed. Godspeed, Captain Biden. Here's wishing you a safe return and soon.

The interesting twist in this story is the presumption that Biden's senate seat is an inheritance his son might somehow be cheated out of.

I did not get the impression that anyone sees the Senate seat as an inheritance. Beau Biden is the Attorney General of Delaware -- not some college kid.

Actually, it is not uncommon for an incumbent who dies or leaves office suddenly to be replaced by a spouse until the next election can be run. Even during elections this has happened. If you consider that Biden's constituents ELECTED him, it is those voters who would expect to have a replacement that best fills Joe's shoes.

I think the article left the impression he could still be appointed Senator even if he was serving in Iraq. I'm sure a way could be found to keep the senate seat in the family.

Ruth Ann Minner is an impressive governor and a woman of great judgment. If called upon, she will make a well-reasoned decision to best serve her state. There are still some solidly ethical and thoughtful politicians left.

As an aside, Beau Biden is an accomplished attorney general of sterling character.

never picked up on that "blatant" assumption at all. Pay attention to the story's main point: that not even a senator's son is exempt from military service...oh, and THIS senator wont pull any strings to prevent that sort of thing happening like his REPUBLICAN counterparts.
