Prompted, it seems, by concerns over John McCain's foot-in-the-mouth admission that he did not know the number of houses he owned, aides to the Senator, GOP officials and conservative activists unleashed a torrent of attacks in an effort to deflect attention to Barack Obama.

Late Thursday afternoon, the Republican National Committee launched the website
ObamaRezkoShadyDeal.com, designed the committee wrote, to "provide users with videos and the latest news pertaining to Barack Obama's lack of judgment and questionable dealings with campaign fundraiser and convicted felon Tony Rezko."

Earlier in the day, the American Issues Project, an outside conservative group, put out a television ad attacking the presumptive Democratic nominee for his relationship to Bill Ayers, a former member of the Weather Underground.

"How much do you really know about Barack Obama? What does he really believe?" asks the ad, likely released independent of the day's fracas. "Consider this, United 93 never hit the Capitol on 9/11 but the Capitol was bombed thirty years ago by a terrorist group called Weather Underground.

Even earlier, the McCain campaign put out another web ad ridiculing Obama as a quasi-messianic, dangerously vacuous celebrity politician. "Back by popular demand," spokesman Brian Rogers wrote, "The One is back to lead us to the Democratic convention in Denver."

Even earlier, Rush Limbaugh took to his radio show to blast Obama again for his Rezko ties.

"The second thing I have to point out to you is that I don't care how many houses McCain has, he and his wife did not get a sweetheart deal from a fraud embezzler like Tony Rezko to buy their houses. But the Messiah did. The Messiah got all kind of sweetheart deals with Rezko, and who knows who else."

And even before then, Rogers came out with a statement hitting Obama on a host of different, disjointed and personalized charges.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

The Kitchen sink counter attack is almost certainly a coordinated effort to move the media - if not the political discussion - away from McCain's gaffe. And, by and large, the press has not taken the bait, likely because the meme that McCain is an elitist is fresh compared to the Obama lines (which were hit to death in the primary).

In a way, this could be a blessing for the Obama campaign. In all likelihood, McCain and his GOP allies were set to trot the Rezko and Ayers attacks out as the election approaches. They still might. But having those cards played in late August makes them all the more unremarkable if they are brought up again in late October.

No, I think the kitchen sink counter attack is what is called "an opening" to elevate the Rezko real estate deal to the MSM level. The MSM can't avoid discussing what is in an ad. I have warned people here not to beg for the campaign to go negative. Not only are the republicans better at it they get to smear the hope and change message. Obama is running on being better. Neither the ad, answering the ad in the MSM, or placing the negative ad in the first place helped him in that at all.

Um, "neither" isn't appropriate when other than two options are being presented.

Beyond that, let's look at reality. Obama was told the land purchase was one long desired and nothing done for his sake, and has never been asked to give or given anything for it.

Since the only people who don't already know that Obama got the exact same "deal" as any random person walking in off the street (and worse than his credit score and history should have gotten him) either

don't care to know anything more about this election than Fox tells them or

are just tuning in and will do the exceedingly minimal research to find out more if the news doesn't just re-use its early disproof,

there's no point in seeking "an opening" for something the MSM has not only already moved past, but has already thoroughly DISproven. .

Great then we don't have to worry. Just the part where Obama has to let it go or explain it.

That's not how the rethugs work. Get serious. The appearence, real or imagined, and in this case imagined by the Fox crowd, is what matters and low information voters will only see that and little else. They'll think O's explanation is just a politician squirming out from under a bad situatioin and the rethugs will have done the damage. My opinion is that anyone that allows a TV ad to influence them should not be voting anyway. Unfortunately they can and the thugs count on them. They are the easiest to sway.

PolitiFact.com on OBAMA / REZKO

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/521/

It is true that Obama paid $300,000 less than the asking price for a century-old mansion that he and his wife, Michelle, purchased from a Chicago doctor in 2005 for $1.65-million.

Rezko's wife purchased the lot next door from the same seller Frederic Wondisford.

Seller confirms that Obama"s offer on the house was the best one, and that he rejected two lower offers from the Obamas before the two sides finally settled at $1.65-million.

Seller also confirms that he did not offer or give the Obamas a discount on the house price on the basis of the price offered and accepted on the adjacent vacant lot purchased by Rezko's wife.

What are you daring me to do. It is not the point I was around for the Keating 5 that is why I am not really too excited about it. If you were around you would realize this got hashed out in the media a long time ago. Go ahead and resurrect it. You are not threatening me with anything. Just remember I told you it would be a better net gain to go positive. This will hurt Obama's narrative of change and hope more than McCain going over the Keating 5 will hurt him. But what can you tell a HuffPo poster. Rove would own you by the way.

"I have warned people here not to beg for the campaign to go negative. Not only are the republicans better at it they get to smear the hope and change message."

The Republicans are going to go as negative on Obama as they can get away with no matter what Obama does, so he might as well give them as much of their own medicine as he can.

The answer to the Rezco charge is to bring up the Keating 5.

According to the Washingtonpost, an unnamed DNC official had this to say: "If they go Rezko, we go Keating." Let's see.

They didn't do the Rezco ad till he did the 7 houses thing. That is my point. What? It isn't a response to Obama? Please!

Who has been telling him to attack??? I can't hardly think?? We will see what happens but don't tell me they were going negative anyway that is weak. They volleyed that back.

It is a shock that there are conservative Christians who willfully play dirty. Making innuendos that Obama is the anti-Christ, for example, is something I could hardly swallow. I mean, how many Republicans who are Christians truly live up to their faith? How many of them are divorced? How many of them have mistresses?

It seems that Christianity to SOME people ends in church and in dealing with their immediate brothers and sisters in Christ, but it does not apply in dealing with human beings running for politics, such as Obama.

I am a die-hard Christian. But in this insane race for the White House, it seems that there are Christians who are willing to turn a blind eye on Christ's teaching of love.

Unfortunately, that kitchen sink has been working...negative ads do work...the GOP has done it each election cycle since 2000, as well as before, and look what happened...need we recap Willie Horton?
Obama's numbers are dropping among all the constituencies he HAS to win, no ifs, ands, or buts, and (how ironic) those are precisely the groups Hillary won and said she could win against Mack...

Also, a new poll asks...who would win against Mack in key battleground states, Hillary or Obama?
Hillary comes out on top in all of them, and averages a 9 POINT lead to Obama's 3 over McCain...so when the Obama fans trot out the false meme about Hillary being a problem for us winning, the facts somehow don't seem to bear it out...incidentally, this disparity in Obama-Hillary's ability to win over Mack has been there for months, with Hillary always being ahead of Obama in beating Mack...while Hillary's ability to defeat Mack has risen in these polls, Obama's has been shrinking...time to put to rest for good the Hillary as a problem meme...

Thanks. Guess Obama's supporters will have kitchen sink duty since O, heaven help us, seems to have scruples about this kind of politics. So I'll be circulating the link.
I think people will find McCain's connection to Keating 5 savings & loan collapse very disturbing (after all, it hit many where it hurt--in their pockets/pocketbooks and cost taxpayers billions of dollars). Pity we have to resort to these tactics.

His little Euro tour, touted as a success by his fans, also hurt him badly...taking his so-called vacay also allowed Mack to get the upper hand...better not be taking anymore of those Hawaiian excursions, O., if you want to stay in this game...

The lesson that hopefully Obama has learned is how to more effectively counter Republican misrepresentations, distortions and lies. With respect to these particular lessons:

Lesson Number 1: Every time the McCain people bring up Rezco say "Keating 5."
Lesson Number 2: The Obama camp should have countered the celebrity ad with Britney by shouting SOUR GRAPES, SOUR GRAPES! The next time they try this, use this kind of response.
Lesson Number 3: The next time Obama goes to Hawaii he should go to the Punchbowl military cemetary and visit his maternal grandfather's (who served in WWII) grave and give a speech about the patriotism of the greatest generation.
Lesson Number 4: When going abroad keep a truth squad on guard at home to answer Republican spin. For example "Isn't is great to have Europeans waving American Flags instead of burning them?" And "The crowds in Berlin show that Obama can repair the very bad damage to Americas' reputation abroad that Bush has done."

You rethugs wouldn't know the truth if she slapped you in the face, which she's been doing for the past two years. Part of me wants McCain to win just so he can destroy the country and we can slap you around with THAT truth but its no use really. No matter what happens you delusional people will blame liberals anyway. We can't fight delusion. It never lets reality set in.

I tried to point out that Obama, as is mentioned in another blog today, is likely using a rope-a-d**o*p*e strategy, but my comment got disappeared because that word didn't have the stars. Sheesh!

Anyway, as I was saying, McCain is tearing through all the money he has on hand because it must be used before his convention. Meanwhile, he and the Repubs are wearing out quite a few of their tactics, which would better have been saved for later on.

And Obama's money keeps coming in. And he keeps ramping up. His recent pushbacks are mild. They will get stronger. And when John "Joe Frazier" McCain is worn out...

It was fun watching the media play all of Obama's ad and speech and then show a snippet of McCain's written rebuttal. Usually, it has been the reverse.

The reason why the media didn't "bite" is because these attacks on Obama are stale already. And Obama's line of attack was from something McCain actually SAID. It wasn't a smear or distortion. That's the key difference on why it hits harder.

Stale from what? What are you talking about? This Rezko thing never got elevated with legs to the MSM but it will now because you can't just ignore a TV ad claim in the MSM. Sort of like the original discussion of Obama's McCain/Houses ad. See it goes both ways. Once the actual campaign starts advertising about it in the MSM has all the cover they need to cover/investigate it without being accused of going after the candidate. Better hope they give Obama a pass but I am not holding my breath they can't look back into the camera and say "nothing here" without explaining why they came to that conclusion and that is a whole new kettle of fish.
