EMPORIA, Va. — Barack Obama said Thursday he's chosen his running mate, but coyly kept all the details to himself as he campaigned with one leading contender and planned a major rally to present the Democratic ticket Saturday in Illinois.

Obama refused to say whether he'd notified his pick or when exactly he would send cell phones buzzing with the answer delivered via text message.

He didn't reveal his choice to Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, considered to be on Obama's short list, even after they met Thursday, according to two people close to the governor. They spoke on a condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Obama seemed to relish the frustrations of scores of reporters following him this week in anticipation of the announcement.

"Wouldn't you like to know?" he said with a grin when an Associated Press reporter asked when the text would be sent.

"I've made the selection, that's all you're gonna get," Obama said as he visited a store selling roasted Virginia peanuts as nonchalantly as any other day campaigning in a battleground state.

Obama planned to appear with his pick Saturday at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill., where he launched his presidential campaign in February 2007. Obama then planned to travel to the battlegrounds of Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Montana before arriving in Denver to accept his party's nomination Thursday.

One person who had been vetted for the position told The Associated Press there had been no contact from Obama or his campaign about the decision. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Obama campaign asked candidates not to speak about the decision.

Story continues below

The Illinois senator was widely thought to be considering Kaine, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas and Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Evan Bayh of Indiana. None of them gave anything away _ at least not in words.

Obama spent part of the day with Kaine, who reportedly told a colleague Wednesday that he believed he was on the short list. West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin said Kaine told him although he hadn't heard anything from the Obama campaign on where he stands at the time, "he really thinks he has a chance at the short straw."

Kaine and Obama met privately with the governor's staff for 15 minutes at a Richmond hotel. Afterward, Kaine said he would let the Obama campaign speak about whether the candidate asked him to be his No. 2. But two people close to Kaine said the governor was still in the dark.

Kaine plans to fly Friday night directly from Virginia to Denver, site of next week's Democratic National Convention, three people with knowledge of the governor's travel plans said. The plans could be changed if Kaine is told he needs to fly to Springfield instead.

Biden had a family gathering at his home Thursday afternoon, with his wife Jill, niece Missy Owens and son Beau, Delaware's attorney general, coming and going past reporters staked outside. Biden ran errands, including a visit to the dentist, but didn't speak to the media as he came and went.

Biden is a favorite for the vice presidential nomination among Democrats who think Obama could use his experience and tough campaign style. Biden has served 35 years in Congress, while Obama has served three.

Sebelius, campaigning for Obama in Iowa, said being mentioned as a potential running mate is something of "an out-of-body experience."

"Whoever it is, I am an enthusiastic supporter," she said but added she would leave the announcement to the campaign.

Bayh worked in his Capitol Hill office and later spent time at his home in Washington. He left wearing shorts and a baseball cap but told reporters outside he had no news to share. "Not tonight, sorry," he said.

It's possible Obama could make a surprise selection, although at least one dark horse candidate appeared out of the running. Former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn's spokesman said he would be traveling internationally until Monday, making a Saturday visit to Springfield seem unlikely.

Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, a national security expert who has been mentioned as a possible candidate, was at his home in Jamestown on Thursday. He told an AP reporter that he was not Obama's choice and that he had not been asked for any background information.

New polls out this week show Obama is neck-and-neck with GOP rival John McCain and still has yet to win over some supporters of Democratic primary rival Hillary Rodham Clinton. The polls sparked fresh discussion of whether Obama would make a surprise selection of Clinton as his running mate.

Clinton had other plans for the weekend. She was scheduled to visit the New York State Fair Friday and speak in Fresno, Calif., Sunday at the United Farm Workers of America's 18th Constitutional Convention.

Is Obama an idiot? I don't think so, really. But one of the many problems with being a leftist is that it leads you to say lots of stupid things. Today, the Obama gaffe machine went into overdrive. By November, I suspect that most voters will have heard enough to know that Barack Obama is unqualified to be a middle-manager in a well-run company, let alone President of the United States.

As much as I have been anti-Hillary I woke up this morning and decided that IF, and I emphasize IF, she and Bill can actually take a back seat to Obama and be respectful of his authority, Hillary would be the ace-in-the-hole for the democratic party. I wish it weren't true but sadly it is.
An Obama/Clinton ticket would make them, as Bill said, "Unstoppable". I have been in denial about this because I don't like the Clinton's and I never have. I haven't figured out why but the fact remains that millions of people actually do like them. I have to respect that.
I want Obama to win this election and if HE thinks Hillary can help make this happen then I'm with him 100% in his decision.
However it turns out.........OBAMA 2008

Hillary would destroy any chance Obama has for the White House. We need to face two things: A lot of people are racist. A lot of people are sexist. And it will be impossible to overcome both on one ticket. Not to mention, Hillary is no better than any rethug. She's a corporate "Democrat" just like her husband and we do not need another 16 years (8 Obama/Clinton, 8 more Clinton/Whomever) of Clintons and Bushes in the White House. That would make it 45 years STRAIGHT with a Bush or a Clinton in the White House. Is that what we want for America?

I'll respect whatever decision he makes because frankly he's the most trustworthy man in America, but I think we should think beyond this election in considering the VP pick. The only question for Obama in the short-term is whether or not this will be a landslide in his favor; he's going to win no matter what. So the VP factor in the election should only be a minor concern. He needs to pick someone he can work with over the next eight years who complements him and -- like him -- puts country before any selfish interests. I seriously doubt Clinton can do that. We also need to think about who can continue his legacy when the eight years are up, as VPs often run for prez afterwards.

I thought I read somewhere yesterday that it was 10 properties in total but some of them are combined or something. It's odd though, I realize Cindy could probably be the owner of some of them but one would think even with investment properties that the total number wouldn't be that hard to declare.

I an deal with it being Biden. Would have liked it to be Bill Richardson. That being said, I hope the "Hillary" people settle down and realize it will be between McCain and Obama and make an educated, not emotional judgement.

We will have 4 years and we have already been down a rocky and unmaintained road.

so basically, if he chooses the boob from Virginia, he pulls a "dukakis" (now a verb meaningt the stupid things democrats do that cause the loss of an election). Hillary is the ONLY choice as far as experience, trust, and just plain caring about people, which Obama is too busy posing for presdiential-type photo-ops to be bothered with housing, starvation of our inner city kids and poo-poo to healthcare. GEEZ another republican in the white house. Does a house have to fall on the democrats? THERE is NO way he can win without her . I myself will vote for McCain. IDIOT!

i'm sorry...how has he shown he cares or knows about anything? does he have a specialty? Is he experienced at anything other than speeches? You need a grunt in the mud like Hillary. Not afraid to get her hands dirty with causes and confrontations. But his profile would look good on a coin. She can do the work. but let him choose a governor of a small state. Everyone knows they are such experts on foreign policy

Have you written Hillary to ask her how she feels about your voting McCain?

If not, please do, and if she writes back, come back and post her answer here at Huffington, just pick any thread, we will find it eventually.

Some of us would be really interested in hearing how she answers you on this matter.

Actually, i have been writing and she does respond sometimes. Last emission to her was to beg her to run as an independent. let the two men fight in the woodshed, while she actually shows us her ideas. I think she would win. Face it, BO will lose because of his ego and lack of experience. And that's sad because the repubs have such a bad record, it's ridiculous the polls are this close: New kid on the block, old kid on the block who cares. Give us a future with real, written down plans. Not lofty speeches or side talk from the gumball chewer.

Hillary knows how it works and god knows bill can fix the economy can he do anything except pose?

I'd really like to vote FOR Cynthia at this point, but this (and the Supreme Court) will probably force me to vote against Mc Nasty. I was hoping to vote FOR someone this cycle, but it's not to be.

Barack would NOT make this a week long build up UNLESS it was Clinton. Why? It would enrage the 11% of Democrats who supported Hillary and say they won't vote for Obama. If he picks Clinton? They'll be swinging from the rafters. If his pick were AOTH (Anyone Other Than Hillary) he would have announced before the Olympics with no build up. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. Just wait.

Nochnoi,

I just had an idea about the 9 keys. Tell your (brilliant) friend to suggest an ad by Obama that shows McDrill and Cindy lookalikes coming home from a party or something, McDrill gets out his keyring and tries the first key, it doesn't work, then the second, it doesn't work, the third, the fourth... all the way to the ninth, that one finally works!
