EMPORIA, Va. — Barack Obama said Thursday he's chosen his running mate, but coyly kept all the details to himself as he campaigned with one leading contender and planned a major rally to present the Democratic ticket Saturday in Illinois.

Obama refused to say whether he'd notified his pick or when exactly he would send cell phones buzzing with the answer delivered via text message.

He didn't reveal his choice to Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, considered to be on Obama's short list, even after they met Thursday, according to two people close to the governor. They spoke on a condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Obama seemed to relish the frustrations of scores of reporters following him this week in anticipation of the announcement.

"Wouldn't you like to know?" he said with a grin when an Associated Press reporter asked when the text would be sent.

"I've made the selection, that's all you're gonna get," Obama said as he visited a store selling roasted Virginia peanuts as nonchalantly as any other day campaigning in a battleground state.

Obama planned to appear with his pick Saturday at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill., where he launched his presidential campaign in February 2007. Obama then planned to travel to the battlegrounds of Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Montana before arriving in Denver to accept his party's nomination Thursday.

One person who had been vetted for the position told The Associated Press there had been no contact from Obama or his campaign about the decision. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Obama campaign asked candidates not to speak about the decision.

Story continues below

The Illinois senator was widely thought to be considering Kaine, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas and Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Evan Bayh of Indiana. None of them gave anything away _ at least not in words.

Obama spent part of the day with Kaine, who reportedly told a colleague Wednesday that he believed he was on the short list. West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin said Kaine told him although he hadn't heard anything from the Obama campaign on where he stands at the time, "he really thinks he has a chance at the short straw."

Kaine and Obama met privately with the governor's staff for 15 minutes at a Richmond hotel. Afterward, Kaine said he would let the Obama campaign speak about whether the candidate asked him to be his No. 2. But two people close to Kaine said the governor was still in the dark.

Kaine plans to fly Friday night directly from Virginia to Denver, site of next week's Democratic National Convention, three people with knowledge of the governor's travel plans said. The plans could be changed if Kaine is told he needs to fly to Springfield instead.

Biden had a family gathering at his home Thursday afternoon, with his wife Jill, niece Missy Owens and son Beau, Delaware's attorney general, coming and going past reporters staked outside. Biden ran errands, including a visit to the dentist, but didn't speak to the media as he came and went.

Biden is a favorite for the vice presidential nomination among Democrats who think Obama could use his experience and tough campaign style. Biden has served 35 years in Congress, while Obama has served three.

Sebelius, campaigning for Obama in Iowa, said being mentioned as a potential running mate is something of "an out-of-body experience."

"Whoever it is, I am an enthusiastic supporter," she said but added she would leave the announcement to the campaign.

Bayh worked in his Capitol Hill office and later spent time at his home in Washington. He left wearing shorts and a baseball cap but told reporters outside he had no news to share. "Not tonight, sorry," he said.

It's possible Obama could make a surprise selection, although at least one dark horse candidate appeared out of the running. Former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn's spokesman said he would be traveling internationally until Monday, making a Saturday visit to Springfield seem unlikely.

Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, a national security expert who has been mentioned as a possible candidate, was at his home in Jamestown on Thursday. He told an AP reporter that he was not Obama's choice and that he had not been asked for any background information.

New polls out this week show Obama is neck-and-neck with GOP rival John McCain and still has yet to win over some supporters of Democratic primary rival Hillary Rodham Clinton. The polls sparked fresh discussion of whether Obama would make a surprise selection of Clinton as his running mate.

Clinton had other plans for the weekend. She was scheduled to visit the New York State Fair Friday and speak in Fresno, Calif., Sunday at the United Farm Workers of America's 18th Constitutional Convention.

Oh geez you really need to get over your anger at her. What would make you happy if she committed suicide? I really think that the anger you and a few others in her display about her is at this point in time silly counter productive.
No point arguing with you. You only seem hell bent on hating her so go to it. Enjoy.

How is asking about her qualifications to be nominated to the Supreme Court evidence of "anger at her?"

Don't be a sore . . . loser. I happen to agree though that HRC would be the 'smart" choice and here's why:

According to polls (and who knows if they can be trusted)

1) 80+ % of Obama supporters will vote for him even if she's on the ticket

2) 50% of HRC supporters say they wont vote for him (25% say they'll vote McCain)

even IF gains just half (32.5 %) of HRC's 75% protest voters (losing the other half to the Bradley Effect) he's in a much stronger position in swing states than he'd otherwise be. It's the smart move and he'll do it. Mark my words.

A good position for HiIIary would be HHS or whatever cabinet position would be in charge of implementing universal health care. However, I think HiIIary would prefer to stay in the Senate than be in 0bama's cabinet.

I agree I think she is powerful in the Senate and get a lot of work done. I do think that she is brilliant and probably much smarter than her husband.

As for the folks who hate her there really isn't anything else to say to you. I won't swim in your dirty pool of comments about her. I do not post negative things about OB@ma and support his candidacy because that is my only choice.

You remind me very much of what the GOP did in the 90's to the Clintons and use the same tired old comments about his lack of fidelity and her taking him back...or her failed attempt at health care etc... There is no reasoning with people like that....

They embarrass me as a democrat that we have the democratic equivilent to the Rush Limbaugh. I used to love Randi Rhodes until she too went off the deep end in her hate....

Hate brings on more hate and I have better things to do...like help win an election for the democratic party.

Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI)

- that perfect balance of judgment, experience & change
- the ONLY senator to vote against the Patriot Act
- voted against the war in Iraq
- strong marks on the economy, immigration, ethics, LIBERTY, the environment, crime, foreign affairs.
- an unique senator - an individual with a spine
- quick wit, intelligent attack dog
- Jewish, lives in Middletown, WI - in the heart of the Heartland

I believe it will be Feingold. Biden is golden as well, but he's riskier, not as strong on judgement (Iraq vote) & change, he's also up for reelection. I like Jack Reed too, but he's not as strong on change, golden on judgement & experience, not an attack dog. It's gotta be FEINGOLD.

BaRAC vs. McC - an ad campaign fashioned after the MAC vs PC television ads:

BO: I'm BaRAC
MC: I'm McC
BO: Hey McC, how's the latest version of Bush 08 workin' out for ya?
McC: Oh it's great!! Yup - smooth as ever. I wasn't too keen on versions 00 - 04 but these last few updates have my operations running swimmingly. I feel like a totally new and improved McC thanks to Bush 08! Heck, I don't even remember what it's like to be the old me!
BO: Well, that's pretty obvious to anyone who new you in your earlier version.
McC: (coyly) BTW, just outta curiosity, you still come equipped with those free hope and change programs or uhm . .
BO: Now, c'mon PC , you know those aren't "free". They're gonna take some work and yeah, you and some of your friends will have give up some of the excess RAM u've all grown accustomed to. But u guys have millions of gigs to spare - esp with all the excess you've accumulated using the Bush Operating System.

YOU ALL GET THE IDEA!

BO - '08

Americans have grown weary and tired of presidents who can't remember or parse things. They have grown tired of incompetency. They have grown tired of deceit and fraud. They have grown tired of feeling sick and tired of a president and an administration who doesn't give a damn about them. I'd say, luck is on OUR side. So, get over it and move aside. The Democrats are coming to town!

0bama should wait as long as possible, before announcing his pick.

Think about it - each hour, more and more people sign up to get the text message. To sign up for it, you have you provide your name, email address, cell phone number and zip code. This is awesome data for the campaign to have, which will be used to contact each person. Since you have to provide your 'cell phone' number, they can bypass annoying landlines--giving the campaign 'direct' access to each person who signed up.

Having each person provide their zip codes allows the campaign to assign local precinct captains to make the initial contact with the person who signed up for the text message, which is always helpful.

Even more, after signing up for the text, you are then immediately directed to the 'donate now' page. Who knows how much cash he is raising off of this.

He should just sit back, and collect as much data over the next 2 days, and then make the announcement late Saturday.....or not.

This should be the basis of a campaign ad by Obama:

Show some of the main things on which McCain has shown himself to be confused on and follow it with the statement:

JOHN MCCAIN: TOO MISINFORMED AND CONFUSED TO BE COMMANDER IN CHIEF!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:19 AM on 08/22/2008

How about this:

You hear a narrative about 911 and the thousands who died that day. You show a picture of Bin Laden smiling with the caption "7 years and counting and all we've heard is John McCain say how he will chase Bin Laden through the gates of hell". Where were you before Senator McCain? Show Bush saying "If your country harbors a terrorist you....."Obama-" I supported going into Pakistan to capture terrorist fugitives. McCain and Bush still support the status quo". It's time to use our military and police organisations to fight the terrorists where they live. It's time to let Iraq solve it's own soverienty the way other countries have.We need serious solutions, not lies and misinformation.

McCain has he done anything to make us safer?
