Barack Obama lashed into John McCain during a campaign stop in Virginia on Thursday, ridiculing the presumptive Republican nominee for being painfully out of touch on the economy and not even knowing how many houses he owns.

"Yesterday, [John McCain] was asked again what do you think about the economy, he said I think the economy is fundamentally strong," said Obama. "Now this puzzled me. I was confused what he meant. But then there was another interview where somebody asked John McCain how many houses do you have and he said 'I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my staff.' True quote. 'I'm not sure ill have to check with my staff.' So they asked his staff and they said, 'at least four.' At least four. Now think about that. I guess if you think that being rich means you make $5 million and if you don't know how many houses you have then it is not surprising that you think the economy is fundamentally strong. But if you are like me and you've got one house, or if you are like the millions of people struggling now to keep up with your mortgage payments, you might have a different perspective. By the way the answer is John McCain has seven homes."

Obama's remarks come just hours after McCain admitted, during an interview with Politico, that he wasn't sure of the extent of properties he owned. Democrats have, for the majority of Thursday morning, been champing at the bit, viewing the admission as a golden opportunity to paint the Arizona Senator as a rich elitist. And Obama certainly took the cue.

"There is just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain's world and what people are going through every single day here in America and you don't have to be a Nobel Prize laureate economist," he summarized. "You just have to have a little bit of sense to understand that we cannot go through the same eight years of the failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place."

The McCain campaign clearly sees an area of vulnerability, throwing a kitchen sink of personal attacks at Obama to counteract his charge.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" wrote spokesman Brian Rogers. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

The elbows, indeed, have been sharpened. And the Obama camp smells blood. As the candidate was speaking, his campaign put out a scathing new ad on the McCain-house gaffe that aides said would go on national cable:

Story continues below
advertisement

"It's seven," the spot says of the number of homes McCain owns. "Seven houses. And here's one house America can't afford to let John McCain move into." The screen pans to the White House.

During Thursday's speech, which was preceded by an introduction from Virginia governor and possible VP candidate Tim Kaine, Obama hammered home the economic populist theme even further. Again playing off a McCain gaffe, he chastised his opponent both for the policies he pursued and company he kept.

"Some of you saw the Saddleback Forum where [John McCain] was asked what was rich and he said 'I don't know maybe if you make $5 million, $5 million then you are rich,' which I guess means if you are only making $3 million a year you are middle class," said Obama. "I guess that's what he meant. His top economic adviser said the other day that Americans should stop complaining, that they've become a nation of whiners, that all these economic policies we are talking about is a mental recession. That if you just changed your mind you would be ok...."

UPDATE: Obama is really going all in on this issue. The campaign emails that it will be sending supporters to "battleground states across the country" to host events in front of houses to illustrate "how out of touch Senator McCain is." Among the big events being scheduled include:

DES MOINES, IA: Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius campaigns in Des Moines this afternoon where she will discuss McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

OH: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns at events throughout southeast Ohio

In addition, some of the Obama state organizations are launching "a statewide search to find [voters] who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can't keep track of the number." Should be fun, or funny. This will be taking place in Pennsylvania, Florida, and North Carolina, among other states.

That is the problem with you republicans, which voters would like to have 14 homes? The vast majority of americans are very happy with one home. 14? Is this a joke?

It says a LOT about you Republicans and your "morals".

NO, most Americans DON'T want 14 homes. Only greedy, shallow, morally bankrupt, self-centered people want 14 houses.

They are 30% of this country, and they are known as "Republicans".

The other 70% of us are happy to earn a descent living, have health care, and put food on the table.

WE are the true Americans.

Good stuff in this article but the fickle media won't really cover it. Obama needs ads that are harder hitting. Everything in this article should saturate the airwaves.

While neither of these guys really need to try and prove that they're like "one of us" (both of them are millionaires), at the very least it should stop the McCain campaign from trying to use the term "elitist" when referring to Obama. While this news may not carry much weight for more than another week or so it has taken away a tool for the McCain camp to use against Obama.

This is also a great way to come back after Obama's not-so well received Saddleback interview. Personally, I think he did a great job and used the forum to speak to all Americans rather than play to a crowed that hardly represented the great U.S. I'm a Christian but even I'm smart enough to realize that when you throw a pro-life bomb in a religious crowd you're going to get screams of joy. But I guarantee you that if that forum were in a feminist rally in California or New York the crowd wouldn't have been as receptive as that.

If nothing else it's good to see Obama grow a pair and take on McCain head on regardless of what they may try fire back with.

I bet he collects his social security money. Wonder did he get a stimulus check
none of which he needs Why doesn't he donate that money to charity. How much
did Cindy received when she cashed in on her investment she had in Sudan.

Earlier today I thought this was, at best, a non issue.

Now I think it is looking pretty bad for Obama. Sen Obama seized on tis statement by Sen McCain and has been poking fun at him ever since.

A little reseach indicates that John McCain himself does not own any houses. The houses are owned by members of the family, his children, and some are actually investment properties.

Sen Obama, presenting himself as the "common" man who only owns one house, owns a million dollar house and a vacation property in Hawaii. He reportedly made $4 million last year.

Truthfully, neither can say they have any idea how the average American lives. They both have more money than the average American will ever see. This should be a non issue, but if Sen Obama continues to use it against Sen McCain, he will eventually look foolish.

eventually, like as in, never.

nice try, but McCain's own reaction of trying to damage control this issue shows pretty plainly how this it cutting him.

Uhm, if all it takes is a "little" research, why did his own people say the number is four? I just love the shrill sound of idiots defending the indefensible. I would be, at this point, ashamed to say I was still being duped into supporting the Bush regime. This whole issue has made my day. All the comments from the lemings on the right have sounded like two year olds who know they will not have their way. Thank God!

I will be donating $100 of my hard earned money to the Obama campaign on next Thursday, which is my payday. Those of us who have to work know exactly when payday is and what rich is.

Basically McCain and his staff are not very bright. They run around trying to sound brilliant, but rarely put any thought into their answers.

As I said above, this should be a non issue. Sen Obama can only hurt himself by getting involved in it. Already the McCain camp is bringing up Rezko.

I just want to log in here and see everyone discussing issues. I don't care who owns how many houses.

"he will eventually look foolish."

Difference is Obama is a rags-to-riches story like Horatio Algier or Oliver Twist. McCain is riches to riches, like Richy Rich, or his evil cousin Reginald.

Also, lol @ "eventually". Sounds like a prayer, not an assertion. Unless you can tell the future.

Well, since McCain't has deemed an income of $5 million as the threshold to be considered wealthy, Obama ,at only $4 million income and $1 million home,WOULD be common by comparison to McPAC.

Excuse me, but Senator Obama worked for his money; and wrote two successful books. He did not marry an heiress. Just because the houses are not in McC's name means nothing. This is not a non-issue. McCain left his first wife for Cindy, an heiress; he has no sense of anything to do with economics, not even his own.
Don't compare a fatherless black man to the Admiral's spoiled son. It's absurd.

Has Cindy McCain ever considered the possiblity that her husband was after the cushy life style she could give him and not her? How about the apartment they maintained in DC during the early months of their relationship when they were still married to other people? The fact that McCain asked her to marry him before he even filed for divorce? Now, we know that his previous wife bares him no ill will but he pays for medical insurance and alimony, why would she?

McCain loves to say how much he admires Reagan but the Reagan's completely lost respect for him after he divorced his first wife due to the circumstances. Nancy was very hard pressed to stand near him when she endorsed him. This just goes to show you how silly the republicans are when it comes to solidarity. They will support a dumb idea to the death if one of their own presents it.

Speaking of family choices, here's some recent info regarding an echo of Keating scandal-2008 style-McCain’s Son Steps Down From Bank Post

First National Bank of Nevada was shut down by federal regulators last week. Silver State Bancorp announced that Andrew McCain, son of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, was stepping down from the board of directors. McCain's son said his decision to leave was made for “personal reasons.” According to regulatory filings, Silver State Bank's noncurrent loans shot from $128,000 at the end of the first quarter in 2007 to $70 million at the end of the first quarter of 2008. The losses were attributed to bad bets on real estate lending. Silver State has also been tied to the CMKM Diamonds case, in which penny stock investors were defrauded of more than 250 million dollars. This is not the first time the McCain family has been mixed up in a banking scandal. Senator John McCain was involved twenty years ago in the infamous “Keating 5” savings and loan scandal. . The senior McCain was rebuked by the Senate Ethics Commission, who concluded that he and four other senators had tried to hold off a government investigation into the savings and loan’s risky real estate deals. Lincoln Savings and Loan’s chairman at the time was Charles Keating, who was not only one of McCain’s top donors, but was a business partner with Cindy McCain.-July,2008, INN News

O.K. Heal, let's be fair & not compare apples & oranges-Ronnie became involved with Nancy AFTER his divorce-McCain was having an affair with Cindy for months, during which he cheated on his wife, lied to her, betrayed her trust & then left her & their children, to marry his much younger, much thinner & very much wealthier mistress- Ron & Nancy liked McCain's 1st wife very much & felt sorry for her & the kids-That's not such an unusual reaction-

Obamma was paying off his student loans when John Mccain was settling into yet another mansion. Obamma worked hard for his money, did pro bono work in the inner cities, never forgot who he was, who he was helping, or why. Michelle Obamma was also working, representing those who couldn't afford legal representation, long hours, while Cindy MCCain was benefitting from the Grey Eagle Beer distributership her daddy owned. That isn't work, that isn't hard work. Days spent sitting around in country clubs that prohibit the poor, middle class or any ethnic group. Shopping the frou, frou shops while the rest of Americans were struggling to shop for basics. There is no comparison between Obamma and McCan. Its plain to see who really is in touch with the American People. I wonder how well his ex wife got along. a single mother raising thier kids. While Obamma was working to feed his family honroably, Mccain was cheating on his, leaving his ex with nothing. Real Moral guy there. Cindy is no better disowning her middle class family members. My question is this, how in the hell can evangelicals back such an immoral man, when there is such an Honest man waiting in the wings to do right for us all? No comparison.

Regardless of his houses, he has no home other than the Beltway. How really "regular guy" and "real American"--to the media. Paul Fussell in his trenchant book on the American class structure calls the McCain class "top out-of-sight" meaning their "homes" are hidden from the masses (including, as with McCain;s dissimulating, their obscene numbers) to deter revolution in the face of epic wealth disparity, that inevitably ensues when such brazen sociopathic gluttony and greed becomes exposed. Unfortunately, Obama is not the Putin figure needed to throw these Oligarchs in prison and govern in the national interest. He is just an newer, cooler apologist for big capital like Clinton before him. Meanwhile South America has gone populist from one end to the other, and our adversaries in the new millennium have restored national dignity and public interest government. Globalism soundly repudiated across the world by those holding American assets stolen and sold off by this Oligarchy. Who will ultimately own those oil leases that belong to you and me after Obama and McCain give them to obsolete Corporate predators for a mess of pottage?

And maybe get a 527 to dig up some vets who'll straight lie abuot him (oops, channelled Rove for a second there),

Better still, O should start quoting Rove's anti-McCain smears, and ask "If Rove was lying then, why wold you believe the campaign he's running now? And if if he wasn't lying.... well, he was probably lying"
