Barack Obama lashed into John McCain during a campaign stop in Virginia on Thursday, ridiculing the presumptive Republican nominee for being painfully out of touch on the economy and not even knowing how many houses he owns.

"Yesterday, [John McCain] was asked again what do you think about the economy, he said I think the economy is fundamentally strong," said Obama. "Now this puzzled me. I was confused what he meant. But then there was another interview where somebody asked John McCain how many houses do you have and he said 'I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my staff.' True quote. 'I'm not sure ill have to check with my staff.' So they asked his staff and they said, 'at least four.' At least four. Now think about that. I guess if you think that being rich means you make $5 million and if you don't know how many houses you have then it is not surprising that you think the economy is fundamentally strong. But if you are like me and you've got one house, or if you are like the millions of people struggling now to keep up with your mortgage payments, you might have a different perspective. By the way the answer is John McCain has seven homes."

Obama's remarks come just hours after McCain admitted, during an interview with Politico, that he wasn't sure of the extent of properties he owned. Democrats have, for the majority of Thursday morning, been champing at the bit, viewing the admission as a golden opportunity to paint the Arizona Senator as a rich elitist. And Obama certainly took the cue.

"There is just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain's world and what people are going through every single day here in America and you don't have to be a Nobel Prize laureate economist," he summarized. "You just have to have a little bit of sense to understand that we cannot go through the same eight years of the failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place."

The McCain campaign clearly sees an area of vulnerability, throwing a kitchen sink of personal attacks at Obama to counteract his charge.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" wrote spokesman Brian Rogers. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

The elbows, indeed, have been sharpened. And the Obama camp smells blood. As the candidate was speaking, his campaign put out a scathing new ad on the McCain-house gaffe that aides said would go on national cable:

Story continues below
advertisement

"It's seven," the spot says of the number of homes McCain owns. "Seven houses. And here's one house America can't afford to let John McCain move into." The screen pans to the White House.

During Thursday's speech, which was preceded by an introduction from Virginia governor and possible VP candidate Tim Kaine, Obama hammered home the economic populist theme even further. Again playing off a McCain gaffe, he chastised his opponent both for the policies he pursued and company he kept.

"Some of you saw the Saddleback Forum where [John McCain] was asked what was rich and he said 'I don't know maybe if you make $5 million, $5 million then you are rich,' which I guess means if you are only making $3 million a year you are middle class," said Obama. "I guess that's what he meant. His top economic adviser said the other day that Americans should stop complaining, that they've become a nation of whiners, that all these economic policies we are talking about is a mental recession. That if you just changed your mind you would be ok...."

UPDATE: Obama is really going all in on this issue. The campaign emails that it will be sending supporters to "battleground states across the country" to host events in front of houses to illustrate "how out of touch Senator McCain is." Among the big events being scheduled include:

DES MOINES, IA: Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius campaigns in Des Moines this afternoon where she will discuss McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

OH: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns at events throughout southeast Ohio

In addition, some of the Obama state organizations are launching "a statewide search to find [voters] who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can't keep track of the number." Should be fun, or funny. This will be taking place in Pennsylvania, Florida, and North Carolina, among other states.

Notice that in McBush's response to Obama's critique about houses, McBush's surrogate never once even answered the charge. He simply segued into a fierce criticism of Obama. Obama's team should take heed at how the "response" never defended the remark at all, but used the opportunity to slam obama again. That should be exactly what the Obama team does.

Holy Moly Mama Mia, it's about time! Go get that little bugger Barack! He's been dishing out the sharp elbows; time to let him know that he's in a full contact sport too. Yippee!!!! This is good to use many surrogates and lots of states. People will identify with this. Every McCain forgotten home costs more than Obama's single home. Obama, until just a short time ago couldn't have afforded his home because he was still paying off student loans. His book sales allowed them to have their dream home which is not over the top for Chicago real estate prices. McCain thinks the economy is doing well because the Gross National Product is up and he just keeps getting richer because of the laws he's helped to pass. The tax laws were written for guys like him and they just increase his wealth, but this is the first time in American history when the GNP went up and the income of 90% of Americans went down. Brad Delong/Economist UC Berkley: 1946-1976 bottom 90% of Americans income increased 64%/top 1% increased 20%. 1976-2006 Bottom 90% of Americans income increased 10%/top 1% increased 232%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was no accident. That was a result of legislation passed by the congress we voted for but they were bought and paid for by big money, lobbyists and PACs. John McCain was there for most of that and it was his side that made it happen. Tell America!

GOOD JOB OBAMA! Get 'em where it hurts the most, in their pocketbooks. Sounds to me like his Senator's salary is being stretched to the max, or could it be he is living the life fantastic at the expense of his woman, there is a name for that!

And even if Senator Obama went to a private beach in Hawaii, it pains me that it would be considered an elitist vacation. For crying out loud, it's a state in this blessed Union. It's not like he went to Paris, or Naples, or what.

Wonder why BHO made no mention of his own half-brother in Kenya who lives on $1 per month.

Maybe if we all go out and buy BHO's books, he and Michelle can scrape enough money together to send his half-brother a few bucks.

Let's do it--come on!! We are one nation, let’s all get together on this one and help out the Obamas!! It’ll pay big dividends come election day when Kenya, along with Indonesia and Germany vote our messiah into office as president of the world!!!!

Hmmm,.., let's see, Obama is probably worth about $3 million. How did he get his money? He and his wife worked very hard and he wrote some profitable books. They came from little money and accomplished what they did through hard work and determination.

McCain on the other hand, is worth OVER 100 MILLION DOLLARS. How did he get his money? He married it, period. He came from a wealthy family, the son and grandson of admirals. He almost flunked out from his fancy naval university, Daddy pulled strings, I'm sure. He was known as a womanizer who had numerous affairs. He hasn't achieved anything through hard work and determination except the successful pursuit of his current wife's fortune.

Why should Obama, who has just recently paid his university debts, find every person he might be related to, but never knew, and give them money on which to live?

Cindy McCain's sister received money from her dad until Cindy cut her off. Asking Mrs. McCain to split part of her inheritance with her sister, the sister whose dad made the fortune, is not asking for much.

Obama didn't inherit his money. He and his wife earned it.

I imagine Cindy McCain saw to it that her sister wasn't in the will.

Obama has been reading polls, I suppose... Attack worked for McCain. And so Obama has to go the same road.

He does it elegantly, but we're now entering another phase, a more dirty phase, of this campaign. I had hoped O would take the high road and let his veep do the mudslinging. That's still an option (once the veep is known to the world). But chances are we're going to see a more dirty campaign than O has said he wanted. And though there's plenty to attack McC for, it's a dangerous way to take, too. Marks O a "politician like anyone else", "same old tricks, same old story" and can undermine the positive message of change.

Take the punches that you can land! McCain has so many weaknesses that if you can land the punches there is no doubt he will go down! The more desperate the republicans and his camp get in their responses, the more damage you know he took! I see so much wrong with McCain I can understand why there are republicans staying away from their own covention. The republican party is broken... they are going to play the toughest game they can sort of like a glass jaw fighter... they will use whatever they can to try to keep from going down... but if you are smart and use all of the material they are offering up, we have every reason to believe that if everyone does their part, Senator Obama will be our next president.

Up next in my imaginary world of beauty and justice:

Obama and the Dems take this elitist argument and follow it towards some of its more obvious implications - there is and always has been a 'class war' in America. For 30-ish years the GOP and corporate media may have gotten away with dismissing any direct mention of conflicting class based economic interest in political discussion by flapping their hands and indignantly squawking about how anyone saying such things is engaging in a 'class war' - as if that was so unforgivably RUDE and AWFUL that it was beneath them to dignify such filthy talk with a coherent or reasoned response.

Maybe someone can start getting the world out by showing them a simple graph like the one appearing in Ezra Klien's blog a few days back.

Cue patriotic music and impressive voice over:

John McCain:
He admits he doesn't know much about economics.

He admits he doesn't know much about the internet.

He even admits, he can't remember where he lives.

But John McCain will tell you, "I know how to win wars" and isn't that what's most important?

McCain '08 - He may not know where his own house is, but he can still find Czechoslovakia on a map.
