Barack Obama lashed into John McCain during a campaign stop in Virginia on Thursday, ridiculing the presumptive Republican nominee for being painfully out of touch on the economy and not even knowing how many houses he owns.

"Yesterday, [John McCain] was asked again what do you think about the economy, he said I think the economy is fundamentally strong," said Obama. "Now this puzzled me. I was confused what he meant. But then there was another interview where somebody asked John McCain how many houses do you have and he said 'I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my staff.' True quote. 'I'm not sure ill have to check with my staff.' So they asked his staff and they said, 'at least four.' At least four. Now think about that. I guess if you think that being rich means you make $5 million and if you don't know how many houses you have then it is not surprising that you think the economy is fundamentally strong. But if you are like me and you've got one house, or if you are like the millions of people struggling now to keep up with your mortgage payments, you might have a different perspective. By the way the answer is John McCain has seven homes."

Obama's remarks come just hours after McCain admitted, during an interview with Politico, that he wasn't sure of the extent of properties he owned. Democrats have, for the majority of Thursday morning, been champing at the bit, viewing the admission as a golden opportunity to paint the Arizona Senator as a rich elitist. And Obama certainly took the cue.

"There is just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain's world and what people are going through every single day here in America and you don't have to be a Nobel Prize laureate economist," he summarized. "You just have to have a little bit of sense to understand that we cannot go through the same eight years of the failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place."

The McCain campaign clearly sees an area of vulnerability, throwing a kitchen sink of personal attacks at Obama to counteract his charge.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" wrote spokesman Brian Rogers. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

The elbows, indeed, have been sharpened. And the Obama camp smells blood. As the candidate was speaking, his campaign put out a scathing new ad on the McCain-house gaffe that aides said would go on national cable:

Story continues below
advertisement

"It's seven," the spot says of the number of homes McCain owns. "Seven houses. And here's one house America can't afford to let John McCain move into." The screen pans to the White House.

During Thursday's speech, which was preceded by an introduction from Virginia governor and possible VP candidate Tim Kaine, Obama hammered home the economic populist theme even further. Again playing off a McCain gaffe, he chastised his opponent both for the policies he pursued and company he kept.

"Some of you saw the Saddleback Forum where [John McCain] was asked what was rich and he said 'I don't know maybe if you make $5 million, $5 million then you are rich,' which I guess means if you are only making $3 million a year you are middle class," said Obama. "I guess that's what he meant. His top economic adviser said the other day that Americans should stop complaining, that they've become a nation of whiners, that all these economic policies we are talking about is a mental recession. That if you just changed your mind you would be ok...."

UPDATE: Obama is really going all in on this issue. The campaign emails that it will be sending supporters to "battleground states across the country" to host events in front of houses to illustrate "how out of touch Senator McCain is." Among the big events being scheduled include:

DES MOINES, IA: Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius campaigns in Des Moines this afternoon where she will discuss McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

OH: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns at events throughout southeast Ohio

In addition, some of the Obama state organizations are launching "a statewide search to find [voters] who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can't keep track of the number." Should be fun, or funny. This will be taking place in Pennsylvania, Florida, and North Carolina, among other states.

its all about timing. for all those that were saying that Obama wasnt hitting back hard enough, stop being so short sighted. you have to place your attacks at the right moment. and a week before the conventions start seems like a pretty good time to me.

Not too mention a check from the V.A for disability, that he now votes against for other vets that need it.

McSame can't remember how many houses the woman he cheated with then married has bought him. Just like he can't remember personal stories without cue cards,etc.etc. He is too old to be President and too old to be in the Senate, should be an age limit. Time for the old and their old ways to step aside or be pushed out.

I gotta love it! The 72 years old fella is truly losing his bearings. Hit him on that in all 50 states over and over until November 4.

Answer to Brian Rogers comment in above article:

Yes, Barack Obama earned the most money in his life last year, but from books he wrote personally, unlike his opponent whose name is on books written by Mark Salter.

John McCain received over $6 million last year, and probably every year, we don't know because he's unwilling to publish their tax returns, by cheating on his first wife to marry a rich heiress to a beer distributorship.

John McCain, who was criticized by the U.S. Senate for poor judgment in the Keating 5 Scandal for giving political help to a convicted felon, doesn't wants to get into past relationships. His good friend Charles Keating cost the American people over $2 billion dollars of lost savings and pensions. A reminder of our current subprime banking scandal.

Barack Obama had to rent a place for vacation in his home state of Hawaii because he doesn't have 8 or 9 homes in vacation spots to choose from. John McCain's other free vacation strategy was to stay in Keating's home in the Bahamas three times.

John McCain is one of the richest U.S. Senators, who will never have to worry about the price of ANYTHING. He'll continue the Bush administration's efforts to further enrich the rich at the expense of the middle-class, but thinks America should revive the draft to support his belligerent posturing, likely causing more tragically unnecessary and useless wars.

John McCain is out of touch with every American.

People like McCain can never understand the world they want to save! They are spoilt brats, and see the suffering of ordinary people as merely their own making. His economic advisor Graham says it is in the mind! They fight like dogs to keep others down (remember McCain on Vet's GI Bill)? They have canine conscousness. The people running Sen. McCain’s campaign have canine consciousness. You cannot hope to win then over to any appeal for civility or decency behavior. You have to see them for the dog they are and fight them as such! This is one clear instance where good guys finish last. These dogs—the Lobbyists of the worst kind and Karl Rove protégés—don’t care about common good, but operate from their world view of selfish individualism. In the political arena, they feel they can always count on the stupidity and naivety of their opponents and the political illiteracy and hateful instincts of the working class to carry them through. Finally on Joe Liberman, among McCain’s principal leaders! Carmelion Joe knows that after November, he is history—unless of course Obama loses. Democrats wll take stronger control of Congress—therefore making his help irrelevant. Thus, purely out of self-interest, not principle as he would have us understand, he is fiercely hitching his wagon with McCain—even against Obama who threw him a lifeline when he felt abandoned by other Democrats. That is how hypocritical and selfish Joe has always been. This time, he is clever only by half!

Republicans cannot claim Obama is elitist when their guy owns four houses, wears $500 shoes, has a private plane and a wife worth $150M. When is the Obama campaign going to come out fighting against this elistist crap and call McCain out for the elitist he is!

Obama should pose the following queston to middle-class voters who think of John McSame as "the common man" : "Just how many pairs of $500 Ferragamo shoes do you own?">

We need to keep this going. McCain has had it too easy and I've given up on the MSM to actually report his gaffes. So, let's have Obama, his surrogates, and his supporters do the job.

In that first interview at the fourth of July parade that the Obama's gave with their daughters, Michelle and the girls were teasing Obama because the pants he was wearing were ten years old. It came out that Obama buys several suits pretty much the same and keeps wearing them till they die of old age. The interviewer teased him because his belt looked a little worn. I don't know about you, but that sounds a lot more like home than McCain's $500 shoes and countless houses. Barack and Michelle both grew up in very modest circumstances. Yes, Barack's family lived in Hawaii, but in a very modest apartment in a very modest building. Believe it or not lots of regular American people live in Hawaii. They never experience the wealth of Waikiki because they're working hard to afford the rent. That was Barack's life and Michelle's too. They are so much more aware of what most Americans feel than most any of the presidents that we've had. McCain has been caught up in the Admiral's Ball scene and the privilege that went with living in the Admiral's house on military installations his whole life. Then he married a rich little girl who was barely in her twenties when he was in his forties and he hasn't had an average American day since. He is so out of touch with my life and yours. Psssst, tell people.

I sure hope all of the McCain supporters watch the CNN special about him - the video is on their site.
It's not a pretty picture. I was actually more than pleased that CNN showed some backbone by allowing King to air a lot of those dark sides. I might have to break my daily negative comment to them and break with a thank you note.

None of the beaches O went to were "private" beaches. Hanauma Bay is open to the public, so is Sandy's. McCant lies again.

McCain is so out of touch with America that he doesn't know, or lied about this fact: There are NO Private Beaches in Hawaii. By state law, the beaches belong to all the people! It's an island. If the rich people were allowed to buy up the beaches there would be no real Hawaii left for most Hawaiians. The ocean, the beaches and the fragrant flowers that grow everywhere you turn are part of the beauty of Hawaii that are free and available to all. McCain's father and grandfather knew that Hawaii had earned their right to be full fledged Americans. They wouldn't have forgotten that the Japanese attacked the American fleet there on December 7, 1941 in the only military attack that ever hit American soil. When McCain and his surrogates try to pretend that Hawaii is somehow too exotic to be part of the "real" America, they disparage the great sacrifices made there for the cause of freedom. McCain should go to Pearl Harbor and take the boat to the watery grave that is the USS Arizona. He should throw his flowers on the water along with all the rest of us and he should notice the small oil seep that still leaks from where our boys died. What a jerk to claim he loves the troops and at the same time disparage Pearl Harbor as somehow not "Really" American. Jerk!

p.s. McCain's campaign tries to make America think that somehow because Obama as a six year old lived for four years in Indonesia with his family----that somehow that makes him less American. McCain was born in Panama because his family lived there. I guess we should assume that he's less American too huh? Phooey!

I just had to see how Faux News was covering this (one stroy headlined "McCain Camp Fires Back")

This little gem was in there:

"Cindy McCain was also quoted in Vogue magazine talking about her Coronado condo, also in San Diego.

'When I bought the first one, my husband, who is not a beach person, said, ‘Oh, this is such a waste of money; the kids will never go,’” she told the magazine. 'Then it got to the point where they used it so much I couldn’t get in the place. So I bought another one.'"

Yeah, we have all been there sister! I mean sometimes you just gotta buy your own beach house so that the kids won't always be falling over you there. Maybe one for the pets too.

You are so exactly right. I was just speaking to my wife yesterday about how we needed another beachfront condo because I was tired, sick and tired, of our teenage daughter tracking sand all over the place. She told me we didn't have a beachfront condo. What!? Then I went to the airport to get my private plane (because really that's the ONLY way to travel) so I could find both beachfront condos and the airport told me I didn't have a private plane. I told them of course I do, Mother Theresa told me so.

Well really, we all know, there is only one final solution: his and her condos, each with lofts for the kids.

I mean, you don't want to get your $500 shoes scuffed by her massive beer bottle collection do you?
