Barack Obama lashed into John McCain during a campaign stop in Virginia on Thursday, ridiculing the presumptive Republican nominee for being painfully out of touch on the economy and not even knowing how many houses he owns.

"Yesterday, [John McCain] was asked again what do you think about the economy, he said I think the economy is fundamentally strong," said Obama. "Now this puzzled me. I was confused what he meant. But then there was another interview where somebody asked John McCain how many houses do you have and he said 'I'm not sure. I'll have to check with my staff.' True quote. 'I'm not sure ill have to check with my staff.' So they asked his staff and they said, 'at least four.' At least four. Now think about that. I guess if you think that being rich means you make $5 million and if you don't know how many houses you have then it is not surprising that you think the economy is fundamentally strong. But if you are like me and you've got one house, or if you are like the millions of people struggling now to keep up with your mortgage payments, you might have a different perspective. By the way the answer is John McCain has seven homes."

Obama's remarks come just hours after McCain admitted, during an interview with Politico, that he wasn't sure of the extent of properties he owned. Democrats have, for the majority of Thursday morning, been champing at the bit, viewing the admission as a golden opportunity to paint the Arizona Senator as a rich elitist. And Obama certainly took the cue.

"There is just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain's world and what people are going through every single day here in America and you don't have to be a Nobel Prize laureate economist," he summarized. "You just have to have a little bit of sense to understand that we cannot go through the same eight years of the failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place."

The McCain campaign clearly sees an area of vulnerability, throwing a kitchen sink of personal attacks at Obama to counteract his charge.

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" wrote spokesman Brian Rogers. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

The elbows, indeed, have been sharpened. And the Obama camp smells blood. As the candidate was speaking, his campaign put out a scathing new ad on the McCain-house gaffe that aides said would go on national cable:

Story continues below
advertisement

"It's seven," the spot says of the number of homes McCain owns. "Seven houses. And here's one house America can't afford to let John McCain move into." The screen pans to the White House.

During Thursday's speech, which was preceded by an introduction from Virginia governor and possible VP candidate Tim Kaine, Obama hammered home the economic populist theme even further. Again playing off a McCain gaffe, he chastised his opponent both for the policies he pursued and company he kept.

"Some of you saw the Saddleback Forum where [John McCain] was asked what was rich and he said 'I don't know maybe if you make $5 million, $5 million then you are rich,' which I guess means if you are only making $3 million a year you are middle class," said Obama. "I guess that's what he meant. His top economic adviser said the other day that Americans should stop complaining, that they've become a nation of whiners, that all these economic policies we are talking about is a mental recession. That if you just changed your mind you would be ok...."

UPDATE: Obama is really going all in on this issue. The campaign emails that it will be sending supporters to "battleground states across the country" to host events in front of houses to illustrate "how out of touch Senator McCain is." Among the big events being scheduled include:

DES MOINES, IA: Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius campaigns in Des Moines this afternoon where she will discuss McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

OH: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns at events throughout southeast Ohio

In addition, some of the Obama state organizations are launching "a statewide search to find [voters] who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can't keep track of the number." Should be fun, or funny. This will be taking place in Pennsylvania, Florida, and North Carolina, among other states.

Hit him over and over and over and over with this.

Remember when Bush Sr. had never seen a modern chechout machine at the supermarket? Make this the McCain out of touch moment.

Oh, and don't forget yesterday he said he supported reinstating the draft.

It occurred to me that McCain simply couldn't remember because his memory is fading. Do we really want this guy in the Whitehouse if he can't remember he's the president?

I'm shopping for a condo and even at the reduced prices I"m having a hard time. I have a stupid professional career too! No matter how I slice it, if I want to get into something nice that's not a fixer because, well, I"m not handy and have no time due to career and being a caretaker, I am going to end up having to pay over half my take home pay to cover a mortgage, taxes and HOA fees. When I grew up in the 60's we lived in a house that was gorgeous in a gorgeous neighborhood and my dad was a mechanic and supported our whole family. I want those kinds of economic conditions back!! No matter how hard we try, my brother and I can't make it into a middle class life style and we work-like-dogs!!! Our older sister was able to do it but only because her husband had a steel workers UNION job!
McCain is an ELITIST! Obama WORKED for his money.
By the way, what does an income of 45K make me in McCains socio-economic reckoning?
Oh, and arugala is just a frickin plant, get over it already. Why is some produce elite and other produce, what, low class?? Geezis...

Could it be possible that O has been loading up with ammo this whole time?? Giving the senior senator chances to keep it clean and keep away from a negative campaign, now knowing that "Father Time" can't possibly keep from going negative since he doesn't have anything better to say.

Could this quiet time from the O camp just be time to collect the ammo and let it loose when it counts??

I hope so

I've thought that for a long time fflores. It's the beauty of McCain as an opponent. He stick his foot in a pile of doggy dooo almost every time he opens his mouth. If I was involved in Obama's commercials they'd all be McCain quotes followed by "reality." Simply show the man to be out of touch and unaware of world geography or history. This ad does that and I'm glad they did it!
OBAMA 08!

HIT HIM HARD!

Better. BUT...McCain needs to be labeled just like Obama was labeled by the "celebrity" attack. The campaign needs something that will stick that they can thread through all their ads. This ad is a good jab but the Obama campaign needs an even more solid punch. B+

McCain needs to be HAMMERED for disparaging Hawaii as not really American. Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 is Real American. It's the only time a foreign nation ever brought war to American soil. Hawaii has shed her blood. McCain should take the boat out to the Arizona Memorial and feel the presence of the 1,177 men who died on aboard her and then tell us that Hawaii is somehow too exotic to really be American. What an incredible a$$! His father and grandfather would have known better! Somebody ought to tell McCain that you can't claim to honor the troops, come from a Navy family tradition and at the same time disparage the home of Pearl Harbor! Jerk!

m Ccain's campaign attempt to get back at O bama sounds so stupid. M cCain himself defines rich as at least $5Million and yet they attack O Bama by saying he makes $4 Million?

Even their man says thats not being Rich.

Mccain might not have to, it may very well be given to him. After watching CNN documentry on both Candidates, Obama is allowing the media and Joh Mccain to define him as a man who is ambitous and office seeking from one level to the next. Obama documentry didn't expalin why he is motivated to obtain the presidency but only looked at how he has gotten himself elected from office to office. This is a huge mistake because Mccain documentry played to the emotion of people, while CNN played Obama story as the tactics of man. I honestly believe Obama need to construct his on documentry to emphasize why he has this overwhelming desire to help the poor and close the gap between the middle class and the rich. Obama IMO needs to talk more about his maternal mother and Grandparents which I strongely believe will solidify a connection that people will relate to. Obama need to find away to allow all people to own him as ours and the only way IMO is to talk to the greatness and decency of both cultures within him. The flattery of his mother, mother's family, and the African-Americans who both accepted him as one of us. Obama need to stress the power of family and relay the message that we ( the American people)are his family

I'm glad to see them hitting McCain over his elitism.

But Kaine isn't doing Obama's any favors with the sarcasm (It never works for McCain either).

"He couldn't count that high" is just a -stupid- insult and DIVERTS listeners from the point, which SHOULD be:

"TEN Houses!!!! And a private jet!!! What an out-of-touch elitist he is!"

The sarcasm about counting just TAKES AWAY from the truth of the criticism.

Come'on, Dems! Hit on facts, hit often, and STAY ON MESSAGE!!!!

This whole house thing can be huge

If John McCain can't manage his own personal assets then he certainly can't manage the assets of the united states. (doesn't know how many homes he owns, is in default on property taxes in LaJolla)

If John McCain can't remember to pay his property tax on his houses and if John McCain can't remember that Pakistan does not border Iraq, and if John McCain can't remember that Al Quida isn't in Iran, If John McCain can't remember how many homes he owns, then John McCain is too CONFUSED to manage the United States of America.

Woot!

I've been talling you people for months that John is demented. He's going to be 72 years old next week and his alzheimers is already showing, and not only on the number of houses he has.
John McCain is a dangerous man...think war, think draft, think economy, think before you vote.
