It appears Sam Nunn, the former Georgia senator and a leading Democratic expert on foreign policy issues, can safely be crossed off the list of Barack Obama's potential running mates.

Nunn spokeswoman Kathy Gwin confirms to CNN the former senator will be out of the country through Monday -- far from Springfield, Illinois, where Obama is expected to hold a rally with his newly-named VP Saturday.

Gwin refused to release further details about the trip, saying only that Nunn was traveling on "international business."

What is it with these guys from the 70's and 80's? Isn't Obama supposed to be about a "new" kind of politics? Sam Nunn is only a year younger than McCain. Joe Biden is retirement age.

Good God, this juvenile teasing game about naming the VP is looking bad. Most people read it as slick marketing, and more of the self-important rock star act. Just get it out, already. And the more of these Zogby poll numbers I read, including Zogby's article here on Huff Po, and I'm wondering if we don't need to nominate Hillary next week and let HER pick the VP.

NO to Sam Nunn, sorry but we are looking for a true democrat not a Lieberman type democrat, this guy is just slightly to the left of the late Jesse Helms.

Obama/Clark

For a return to sanity in govenment.

There's not much that could convince me to vote against Obama, but picking Nunn would have been it. If he's of the opinion that people like myself have no place in the military, I certainly can say he has no place holding elective office -- certainly not the vice presidency.

Thank God! All we needed was the architect of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Why is this even news? He was a longshot at best.

Thank God! Nunn is a lackluster homophobe who would bring absolutely nothing to the ticket. He is ancient history in political terms. He couldn't even carry his home state of Georgia for Obama. Please retire Nunn to the dustbin of history after, of course, the Navy has named a frigate or submarine or some such for him.

Agreed...Obama doesn't need to associate with any more homophobes. It was his association with that bigoted gospel singer that ended my desire to ever vote for him, not to mention his throwing gays under the bus to make sure black evangelicals picked him in South Carolina.

Huffpo censors have twice deleted my comments that accurately describe former Sen. Sam Nunn as a notorious superannuated homophobe from Georgia

Why is that?

Remember LGBT people have great voting records and Long Memories:
This is why Sam Nunn is history:

http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Don't-ask,-don't-tell

Congressional opposition to lifting the ban on gay and bisexual people in the armed forces was led by Democratic Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia who organized Congressional hearings that largely buffed the armed forces position that has remained unchanged since the 1981 directive. While Congressional support for reform was led by Democratic Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts, who fought for a compromise, and retired Republican Senator Barry Goldwater, who argued for a complete repeal of the ban. After a large number of people flooded the Congressional phone lines with oppositions to lifting the ban, President Clinton soon backed off on his campaign promise to lift the ban on homosexual and bisexual people in the armed forces. The final result was a Congressional compromise of "Don't ask, don't tell" that was later amended to include "don't harass".

As I said above, Obama has not shown himself to be a real friend of the gay community...he has tried to give some passing concerns for LGBT issues, feeble at best. I remember the Human Rights Campaign Forum where he and John Edwards were AWFUL...Hillary and Dennis K. kicked their collective a--es. Obama talks a good game, as always, but when push comes to shove, he's not there.

Boy, there's a surprise. He's on the boards of Chevron Corporation, the Coca-Cola Company, Dell Computer Corporation, and General Electric. He's also a member of the sexist and racist Augusta National Golf Club

Not only that he was the GOP democratic poster boy for Don't Ask, Don't tell! A friend of mine was a worked in his office and was fired for coming out as G@y during his tenure as one of his assistance. Don't ya just love it when a bigot bites the dust.

Let's hope this is the last time we hear from or of him.

Ruled out? Whoever thought he should be in the running? He is just Joe Liebermann with a Southern accent.

Of course he would not fit. Look at his resume and then BHO's and you tell me who should be on the top of the ticket.
