Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Texas, talks about being considered as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama running mate in his backyard Friday Aug. 22, 2008 in Waco Texas. WASHINGTON — On a day and night of political suspense, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden emerged as a leading contender Friday to become Barack Obama's vice presidential pick as two running mate rivals learned they had been eliminated.

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine spread word he had been ruled out and Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana was told he was not Obama's choice, according to party officials.

The normally loquacious Biden maintained a low profile as associates said they believed _ but did not know _ he would be tapped. They added they had been asked to stand by in case their help was needed.

Additionally, several associates of Obama _ including some at his campaign headquarters in Chicago _ said they believed Biden was the choice, though they cautioned they had not been told directly. Biden spent the day at his home in Delaware, huddled with friends and family.

Among those who made Obama's short list, Biden brought the most experience in defense or foreign policy _ areas in which Obama is rated relatively poorly in the polls compared with Republican Sen. John McCain. Biden, 65, was elected to the Senate at the age of 29 in 1973.

Compounding the mystery, conservative Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas emerged _ however briefly _ as a contender.

Former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's chances remained uncertain, although several aides said they do not believe she was in contention. They added the Obama campaign had never requested financial or other records from her, the typical first step toward a nomination.

A Democratic official close to Bill Richardson said the New Mexico governor was told he had been passed over.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius rounded out the roster of likely contenders _ a list that did not take into account any surprises that Obama might harbor.

"No, no, no, no, no, no, no, nooooo," Sebelius told reporters who asked for her latest thoughts on the months-long search.

Three days before Democrats open their convention in Denver, officials said the Obama campaign had taken the trouble to print material bearing the names of several potential ticket mates. The result was to minimizing the significance of a report that one company was churning out signs bearing Bayh's name.

Obama told reporters on Thursday he had made his choice, and aides used the prospect of a text-message announcement to try and attract additional supporters by soliciting their cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses.

Even that became occasion for intrigue.

Late Friday, several officials said the text message announcement would be distributed Saturday morning, a few hours before a scheduled rally at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill., where the Democratic ticket would appear for the first time.

Hundreds of miles to the west, carpenters, electricians, sound stage gurus and others transformed the Pepsi Center in Denver into a made-for-television convention venue.

Tucked away in one corner were thousands of lightweight rolled cardboard tubes, ready-made handles for signs bearing the names of the Democratic ticket _ once the identity of Obama's running mate was known.

Edwards, whom House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had touted for running mate, told The Associated Press in Waco, Texas, "I have had interactions with the Obama campaign over the last several months but I will not get into details."

Kaine, a moderate governor from a swing state, boarded a private plane at a small airport for a flight to Denver _ not Springfield, Ill., and the Democratic ticket.

Bayh, a second-term senator, attended tennis camp with one of his sons.

"My answer to any question about the subject that I think you're referring to is that all inquiries should be directed at Senator Obama's campaign," said Clinton, the former first lady who came close to capturing the nomination in the primaries of last winter and spring.

Despite the advice, neither Obama nor his aides were saying.

"Obviously, the most important question is: Is this person ready to be president?" Obama told "The Early Show" on CBS. Second, he said, was: "Can this person help me govern? Are they going to be an effective partner in creating the kind of economic opportunity here at home and guiding us through some dangerous waters internationally?"

And, he added: "I want somebody who is going to be able to challenge my thinking and not simply be a yes person when it comes to policymaking.

Clinton's credentials were forged in the primaries and caucuses where she ran a close second to Obama in the battle for the nomination. She maintains a loyal following among Democrats, many of whom have yet to swing behind the man who defeated her.

There was no shortage of other speculation, ranging from GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who traveled with Obama to Iraq and Afghanistan, to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, to Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut.

http://tinyurl.com/6jb7l6 - he's anti-gay. I'm tired of discrimination based on SO - not voting for BO if this is the guy he picks...

Do people know Chet is gay?

Never heard of him before, but he's a decent choice. Watch Chet Edwards give a speech. He's a populist with a way of going for the jugular with a smile.

My first reaction was Chet who?? But, after reading his resume, it may not be a bad choice. Apparently he does not have the huge ego many in contention have, because no one outside of Texas has ever heard of the guy. That might be a good thing. Wouldn't winning a big state like Texas make Obama a shoo in? The main thing is to get a democrat in the White House. LBJ was from Texas. Of course, he had a huge ego and was extremely powerful but he helped JFK win the White House, no doubt. Also, we need Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Evan Bahy in their current roles, they can be more effective there than in the VP spot. Tim Kaine would maybe help deliver VA, but winning Texas would be a bigger win. Just my 2 cents...

It will probably take more than Chet Edwards to win Texas for Obama. This is still a big oil state, even though the emphasis has shifted towards natural gas recently - and that is strong Republican territory.

I know Chet Edwards - about as well as any constituent can I suppose. My wife and I worked on his Senatorial campaign in Waco in '83 - right out of college and ready to change the world, or at least the state. I can honestly tell you that he is very dedicated to the well being of all citizens of Texas, not just his current congressional district. He well liked by people across the political spectrum for his honesty and integrity - as evidenced by his continued success even when the re-districting fiasco here was put in place to get rid of any democrat in office. Chet has persevered because of his hard work ethic and ability to communicate with people from all walks of life.

Even though I would not like to see him leave this district, (no doubt a Republican would fill his seat), he would be a real asset to Senator Obama should he be elected President.

He is not as well know as some of the Sunday talk show crew, but in my opinion, being a dedicated member of the administration is more important than the ego fulfillment of celebrity.

You're probably right about that. But because Chet Edwards nationally is relatively unknown shouldn't Obama be choosing someone who can not only help him govern effectively but help him win the office to begin with? Wouldn't it be great for Texas and the country if he could stump effectively enough in Texas on Obama's behalf to win it for the Democrats?

This may be way whacky,, but since Obama wanted to keep this so secret.. does anyone else think it may be Wes Clark.. I say this specifically because a story ran that said there was no need for him to come to the convention. That took all the attention off him.. and wouldn't it be a surprise if Obama comes up with him.. while all the reporters were hovering everyplace else...

If drama queen Barry picks Chet Baker from Texas then Hillary's "I Told You So" campaign kicks off Nov. 5.

Oh the DRAMA! I am sitting here laughing my rear off at the news programs. Ther is almost no minute that goes by withough the name Barack Obama!
This is more advertising than anything else he can do!
What a brilliant ploy to wipe the screen clean of Republican thoughts. McCain should start writing checks so every commercial for the Friday/Saturday news loop will be a McCain commercial.
Man I have heard that even bad publicity is good publicity but how can you beat good publicity for free?
It does not matter who the choice is. Senator Obama can only win now with this dragging on of his choice.
A good choice now would just be the cherry on top.

How is it good publicity when people are getting steaming mad about the unnecessary posturing on Barry's part? The only cure for this is picking Hillary, which will be so exciting that everyone will forget about the process itself.

You are getting mad that you don't know the VP pick yet? That's entirely self-generated. Obama himself has done nothing to fan the hysteria flames over this. I mean people, get a grip. That giving a date when he would announce his pick would turn people off of him? What planet might they be from?????

It is fine for me if she is the choice, you do not have to go womens lib on us.
Hillary would be a great insurance policy for the health of our President.
Remember, Republicans hate her and would never allow her to be president!
Please lighten up with your woman thing. I am a staunch advocate of breaking the glass ceiling.
Your ability to become pirssed over anything is actually quite a turn off for your position!

Very smart of drama queen Barry to drag this veep thing out until the press hates him, and all but the most serious kool-aid drinking Obamatons hate him, especially if he doesn't do the right thing and pick Hillary. Is he trying to lose the election?

So what does that make McCain, who is waiting to see what Obama does? Your use of "Barry" shows that your mind is as narrow as your anal pore. Try a laxative.

Well the fact that sell-out Pelosi, who has blocked anyone from taking action re: impeachment, etc, likes him is pretty much all I need to know. But being popular with moderates and conservatives in Texas seals the deal. Two thumbs down.

I am sorry to say this but I really think Senator Obama and his campaign has become complacent and do not understand the voracity of the RNC. If he his sitting back assessing who he would like while enjoying is Hawaii vacation and not paying attention to the recent polls and attack ads then we have lost already. Every single republican will vote for John McCain as they have been doing this for decades. The Dems are split, intelligent and figure they can vote for whoever they want. It won't work. I supported Hillary during the primaries. I now support and have contributed to Senator Obama. But what he fails to recognize is that the split in the party as it stands now may run deep. People are looking to the 2012 elections because if Obama fails to win - McCain gets elected and Hillary's ambitions are no longer shattered. Just think she could start campaigning in about 2 years with an I told you so platform. For these reasons I would think that the Obama/Clinton ticket is a must. He will gain the ground he lost and both Clinton's will be on board again. The only argument that the Obama campaign has put forth with respect to Clinton is that he may not like such a big presence looking over his shoulder- well suck it up because you need them to win. If he picks an unknown like Chet Edwards- he could lose his own state.

I know of many Republicans who are going to vote for Obama. They aren't all nuts, especially now. There's a huge groundswell of anger about Bush, and they don't want to go down the rabbit hole for another four years. I do know, however, many who despise Hillary so much that they would think twice if she were on the ticket.

If this is true, it is a prime example of OBAMA'S EGO. Picking a virtual NOBODY. I mean who needs a name, A REAL NAME beside him right? If he picks this guy HE HAS LOST MY VOTE, which really won't matter here in Chicago, and he will have OFFICIALLY THROWN THE ELECTION AWAY. Can you say PRESIDENT MCBUSH?
