I Like ItI Don’t Like It

A new celeb-filled pro-Obama video is going viral. Titled "American Prayer," the song features lyrics by British artist Dave Stewart and features a slew of actors and musicians, including Jason Alexander, Forest Whitaker, Macy Gray, Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Baez. Even Pamela Anderson and Perez Hilton make cameos.

Watch it:

Dave Stewart explains why he wrote the song:

People long for a connection-- whether it is to music, to their country, or to a big idea. Regardless of what happens in November, Senator Obama has reminded millions of people that they have the power to connect to bigger ideas. He is, in essence, the embodiment of a new anthem for change. He has continued King's narrative from what was once thought of as a dream to a reality. I find it especially relevant that Barack Obama will accept the Democratic Party Nomination for President 45 years to the day of King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

When we were originally writing the song, Bono was crafting the words in a way that would make people think about the fact that 'America' as a concept was a truly great idea, based on the bedrock of equality. I find it more pertinent than ever to release it now; to the moment America finds itself in, daring to re-imagine itself and its place in the world.

When I set out to make a video for the new version of this song, I wanted to honor all of those millions of people, especially young people, who are, for the first time, feeling empowered to voice their beliefs. I wanted to capture how Obama's message of change has echoed across the broad fabric of what is America. To do that, we've cast the film with an eclectic array of personalities, including Forest Whitaker, Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, Cyndi Lauper, Barry Manilow, Joan Baez, Macy Gray and Joss Stone. They appear alongside veterans, teachers and everyday citizens-- all of whom have been touched by this simple idea of change. As an Englishman, I'm not an expert in all the intricate details of American politics. But as an artist, I understand how rare it is to inspire a connection to a bigger idea or purpose. This video isn't so much an endorsement of Barack Obama as much as it is a celebration of all those who have picked up a sign, who have registered to vote and are working to make the world a better place. So as Senator Barack Obama ascends to the mountain top, let us not forget all of the others who for the past 40 years have sung anthems of change to make this moment possible

Here are the lyrics:

This is my American Prayer
This is my American Prayer

This is the time to finish what you started
And this is no time to dream
This is the room
We can turn off the dark tonight
Maybe then we might see

American Prayer
American Prayer

And this is the ground
That keeps our feet from getting wet
And this is the sky over our head
And what you see depends on where you stand
And how you jump will tell you where you're gonna land

American Prayer
American Prayer

My oh my
Couldn't get much higher
Lets not kick out the darkness
Make the lights brighter

And these are the hands
What are we gonna build with them?
This is the church you can't see
Give me your tired, your poor and huddled masses
You know they're yearning to breathe free
This is my American Prayer
American Prayer
American Prayer

When you get to the top of the mountain
Will you tell me what you see
If you get to the top of the mountain
Remember me

Your tears will be nothing compared to those you cry on election night if this tripe continues.

What, he's not a messiah figure, his following isn't a creepy cult, there isn't some weird cult leader vibe here.

He's just the prayer of all good Americans to save the country, and the world, and fix everything that's wrong.

HALLELUJAH... oh, was that weird and culty, believing one semi-corrupt politician from Chicago can somehow "fix" America, and Politics, and the economy, and the environment; while making everyone feel good about themselves in the process?

Can we elect a cult leader, as President?

Yes, we can... we probably shouldn't; but we can.

wow!brought tears to my eyes for the first time in a very long time.how can americans not be inspired by this?this is our chance.this is our time.dont let it get away from us.everything we've ever wanted for this country is possible if we now.ite,now.it wont be easy but we must start now!

That was so beautiful!! It brought tears to my eyes. Twice. I particularly liked the references to all of the early immigrants who have come to America to live their dreams and make their world a better place- this is the foundation of our country, and so often we get caught up in who has a "right" to be here and who doesn't that we forget that it was their dreams that made this crazy experiment possible.

"The Fierce Urgency of Now" and Dr. King's speech in juxtaposition with pictures of tanks and battle-scarred housing projects is a powerful call to all of us to stop and think about where we are headed this November and beyond, and reminds us again that we can never stop fighting for our highest ideals- the rights to liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness. I wish that this would play on an endless MTV Loop- it should be played on the radio, any station that plays music could turn this into a huge hit. It's 2008's We Are the World ;)

My only critique on this piece would be that perhaps it gets a little high-handed in a spiritual sense, and Obama has had the messiah criticism leveled at him just scant weeks ago... I think that Obama speaking, his face, and his connection to people is very powerful- ordinary people smiling and waving his signs is very powerful, but it gets slightly over the top in a few spots.

how can being compared to the messiah be a bad thing? really.if more people had barack's integrity, and ability to inspire and unite people of every genre',and were portrayed as messiah-like ,or 'the one',whatever, this world wouldnt be in the mess it is now.iff barack IS the ONE?HE GETS MY VOTE WITHOUT QUESTION.better than the devil incarnate and his minion's in power, now.

Seeing this video and showing what America looks like right now under GWB, it is powerful and the major theme of this video is truth - not the negativity we have seen from the McCain camp. It is a humbling statement and I have sent it to everyone that I know. Thank you Mr. Stewart...

I know I'm dating myself, but do others remember the Coke ads that were all big groups of people singing and live scenes of Americans all over the country with the song "I'd Like To Teach the World to Sing"? Those were powerful ads. They sold Coca Cola, but they inspired America too. They made us feel good about being Americans. They made us laugh and cry. This video, trimmed down to 60 or 90 second ads could do the same, especially if pictures of a living America were interspersed. There need to be issue ads, but there need to be inspiration ads too. Ads that people want to watch. A song they listen to because they want to learn the words. A song they find themselves singing to themselves when they do the dishes or change the oil. This could be the beginning of such an ad campaign. I know it would cost a lot of money, but I think it could be a game changer. Television ads have become shorter, snappier, more expensive AND less inspiring. When was the last time anyone ran a cohesive, connected series of ads that drew America into the heart and soul of itself? What do others think?

Yes...me, too. And I agree. Isn't the whole point of this campaign restoring hope and belief in our political system? Letting in some sunshine on what has become a cloudy and miserable Washington? Undoing the great damage to our Constitution and restoring government "for the People"?

I think it is, and I think we have to reach the emotional center of our people. That's what made us strong and that's the absence that weakens us.

Pollyanna ;-)

I remember the Coke commercials, and I agree every ad does not need to be about policy or counterattacking the opponent. Some inspirational ads would be great.

I remember the Coke ads and I agree with your sentiments, Karela. This video was like a breath of fresh air. It is inspiring and it amplifies hope as a universal theme. Also, as you said, it draws America into the heart and soul of itself. Great observation.

Just as Will.I.Iam's tunr, this one shows the hope and inspiration from the supporters of Obama as opposed to what we see from the other side.

Great song, easy choice.
