Polar Bear

Nine polar bears were observed in one day swimming in open ocean off Alaska's northwest coast, an increase from previous surveys that may indicate warming conditions are forcing bears to make riskier, long-distance swims to stable sea ice or land.

The bears were spotted in the Chukchi Sea on a flight by a federal marine contractor, Science Applications International Corp.

It was hired for the Minerals Management Service in advance of future offshore oil development. The MMS in February leased 2.76 million acres within an offshore area slightly smaller than Pennsylvania.

Observers Saturday were looking for whales but also recorded walrus and polar bears, said project director Janet Clark. Many were swimming north and ranged from 15 to 65 miles off shore, she said.

Department of Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne in May declared polar bears a threatened species because of an alarming loss of summer sea ice and forecasts the trend will continue.

Polar bears spend most of their lives on sea ice, which they use as a platform to hunt their primary prey, ringed seals. Shallow water over the continental shelf is the most biologically productive for seals, but pack ice in recent years has receded far beyond the shelf.

Conservation groups fear that one consequence of less ice will be more energy-sapping, long-distance swims by polar bears trying to reach feeding, mating or denning areas.

Steven Amstrup, senior polar bear scientist for the U.S. Geological Survey in Anchorage, said the bears could have been on a patch of ice that broke up northwest of Alaska's coast.

Story continues below

"The bears that had been on that last bit of ice that remained over shallow shelf waters, are now swimming either toward land or toward the rest of the sea ice, which is a considerable distance north," he said in an e-mail response to questions.

It probably is not a big deal for a polar bear in good condition to swim 10 or 15 miles, Amstrup said, but swims of 50 to 100 miles could be exhausting.

"We have some observations of bears swimming into shore when the sea ice was not visible on the horizon," he said. "In some of these cases, the bears arrive so spent energetically, that they literally don't move for a couple days after hitting shore."

Only further research can tell the effect of greater swimming distances on polar bear populations, he said.

"Polar bears can swim quite well, but they are not aquatic animals," he said. "Their home is on the surface of the ice."

Satellite data Saturday showed the main body of pack ice about 400 miles offshore with one ribbon about 100 miles off Alaska's coast, said Mark Serreze of the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Clark said the animals' origin and destination could not be known without radio collar monitoring.

"To go out there and say they were going from this point to this point would be complete speculation," Clark said.

Observers have no indication of the fate of the nine polar bears observed Saturday.

Thanks for this link. It shows we are very close to the previous average around 1980, in terms of ice cover. It is amazing isn't it? One colder winter and the arctic has recovered to it earlier condition. These are obvious fluctuations, and not some large catastrophic shift in climate. Those bears will survive in any case. They have survived complete meltdown before. They can swim practically like Phelps.

What the link said was that sea ice extent is 1.50 million square kilometers (580,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average.

It also says the Northwest Passage is almost clear of ice.

They are saying the same things now that were saying in 1975 when they thought we were headed for the next ice age. Global warming is a myth and an ideoligy designed to make money for people perpetuating said myth. Al Gore has made a mountain of money scamming weak minded people as to the effects of the global warming lie. I understand there are many scientists who believe it exists, but there are also many who say humanity is haveing a negligable effect on earths climate. The Ideoligy of global warming is the new evironut religion. You have no proof it exists. You quote dwindling ice pack in the arctic, but never mention the growing icepack in the antartic.

The often-repeated wing-nut myth that there was widespread predictions of global cooling in the 1970's has been thoroughly debunked. There was some investigation of the behavior of aerosols but that was it.

It's about the environment. Arctic and Antarctic? There is a big deal. Let's say weather shifts and Hawaii becomes colder which Alaska warms. It stands to reason that indigenous species in both reasons will die off because of the changes. Nature does what is intended to do. Our practices are affecting that, and what we lose we cannot get back. It would seem that we have lost enough. Our future generations deserve better than what we are leaving for them.

Let's talk about the antarctic ice pack.

If you've lived for any length of time in an area with cold winters, you will have noticed that the heavier snowfalls happen when the temperature is warmer (but still below freezing, of course) On the really frigid days, snow tends to be light and sporadic. So as temperature rises, you would expect to see more precipitation in the form of snow. Increases in the depth of the ice sheet that are INLAND in the antarctic is something that you would expect to see as the climate warms.

Ice that is floating on water is another matter, as it would tend to melt more quickly given the coefficient of heat of water. And in fact, the ice sheets at the shorelines of the antarctic (as well as the entire arctic ice sheet) are thinning.

The fear is not so much that we will see melting of Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets but rather that they will slide into the oceans. If you really want to learn about this, see the work of Jay Zwally.

The life of an Animal under duress is one of hunger, pain, and suffering. Most humans would be immobilized by the sheer discomfort, danger, and effort involved in the struggle to survive as an Animal in what little we have left of the vanishing "wild". These are brave and noble creatures, and their extinction is an indictment of our greed and ignorance. Humans are the only species whose very existence destroys the ecosystem. The only species with wars, crime, factory farms, who participate in killing as a sport (hunting, fishing), and who casually refer to the rape of mother Earth as "progress".
We are a scourge upon this planet, and have a lot to be ashamed of. One very good way to begin making amends would be to stop mistreating Animals, stop eating them, and stop destroying their habitat. But of course, we won't, because we are too selfish, violent, and ignorant, aren't we?

It is clear that you do not have a scientific background, or any level of intelligence past "I rule, everything else drools." Or at least that's all your showing the people who read these comments. If "human progress," as you call it, leads to the extinction of animals, and the destruction of the world's forests, lakes, oceans, etc.. we, as humans, won't have a leg on which to stand, and we will die off as well. Our existence depends on the existence of a healthy planet. A healthy planet consists of healthy ecosystems, which rely on the species which live in those ecosystems. When you eliminate species, you effect ecosystems, and if you keep going, eventually the whole system goes under. Your position on these issues makes no sense. Curbing global warming could only create economic prosperity, and end our dependence on foreign oil. What could possibly be wrong with that? If we save animals, and stop pumping pollution in to our air, while not effecting the lives of people in a negative way, where's the argument against that? The prosperity of this country will depend on people like wising up. I can't understand why people are so sure in the religion they preach, but don't follow, when there are no facts or evidence to prove that God exists, but they can't bring themselve to believe that global warming, for which the evidence is abundant, is real.

Not true.

Ever see a cat play with a mouse? Or Killer whales flipping a baby seal back and forth like a football? Animals LOVE to torture other animals.

And as far as crime: If a humans did HALF the things animals do, we'd all be in jail. rape, Incest, cannibalism, and infanticide are COMMON in the animal kingdom. Not to mention misdemeanors like public defecation and masturbation.

Stop the romanticizing already.

you're right, Edva, it all comes down to greed and ignorance

if anyone tries to get a global warming denier to admit the overwhelming scientific evidence showing human activity is causing global warming and destroying biodiversity, the denier can only think of him/her self

they are ignorant, greedy, self-centered and short-sighted

deniers cannot think beyond themeselves, they are stuck in their own narrow little world

they haven't reached any of Maslow's higher developmental levels

they can only think at the level of an angry two year old; they don't want anyone to say they shouldn't drive their gas guzzling SUV, or turn down the thermostat, or turn off the lights when they leave a room, or take public transportation once or twice a week to and from work, etc..

they are the type who think the biggest accomplishment in life is getting and flaunting the most toys

totally ignorant and pitiful

Actually people are concerned that the poor and the elderly will not be able to heat their homes, especially in the northeast where home-heating oil is widely used, due to the excessive restrictions and regulations on domestic oil production.
Unfortunately, these people won't have time to retrofit their homes with solar panels or windmills.
People in 3rd world countries are dying because we are using corn as a fuel source instead of a food source. I'm sure very grateful.
"they are the type who think the biggest accomplishment in life is getting and flaunting the most toys"
I agree. They should stop buying those "toys" and let the companies that produce them fire all their employees. If they want to get their kids away from the X-box and out to the park they should walk the 15 miles it takes to get there.
School season is coming up. Do you know how much diesel fuel it takes to run the fleet of buses necessary to take children back and forth? The damage being done to the planet in the name of "education" is dusgusting.

Huffpo's broken (as usual), so I'll repost my reply to the wing_nut tro_ll here:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"do Polar Bears swim for miles from ice pack to ice pack or do they not? Answer: yes they do."

Read and try to understand this time:

"Nine polar bears were observed in one day swimming in **open ocean (...) an **increase** from previous surveys **"

Lots of polar bears have been found de_ad from exhaustion from the increased spans they have to cover.

"SCIENTISTS have for the first time found evidence that polar bears are drowning because climate change is melting the Arctic ice shelf.
The researchers were startled to find bears having to swim up to 60 miles across open sea to find food. They are being forced into the long voyages because the ice floes from which they feed are melting, becoming smaller and drifting farther apart."

This is the beginning of the end -- for these bears, for nature-- and for us if we are not more careful. We have too little money to fix EVERYTHING that climate breaks. Triage is applied in an emergency to allow the most globally beneficial use of inadequate resources. There will be severe climate disruptions, which will be left untreated because they will be recognized as able to recover autonomously. Selected climatically-induced emergencies where tax-payers’ money can reduce suffering will be funded. Last, and most sadly, there may be even situations where unlimited funds cannot reverse impacts and the limited funds are deemed better deployed on other projects for more go to www.climatechangetriage.net

I am not a polar bear expert but just looking at the photo that bear looks frightened by the hovering helicopter and expending a lot of energy trying to look up to face the threat as most wild animals would do. Add that to the turbulance that is being kicked up in the water from the helicopter's blades, it seems lucky that the poor thing doesn't drown. I am sure polar bears do not normally swim on their backs for any great distance. Maybe they are swimming farther because they are being harassed by the amount of activity in their areas by humans.
