First Oregon Senator Gordon Smith did it --twice. Now another Republican is touting his connection to Barack Obama in a campaign ad -- Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays. While Smith merely noted that he had worked on legislation with the Democratic nominee, Shays declares that the share a common attribute: "hopefulness." (He also claims John McCain's "straight talk." A good answer to the latest "Passed Over" ad Mc'Cain released featuring H'illary C'linton should be an ad about the string of GOP candidates who are shunning J-Mac and linking themselves with O'bama.

"An increasing number of GOP candidates in Congress are ignoring John Mc'Cain and promoting their connections, no matter how tenuous, with B'arack O'bama in their advertising."

"Why?"

"Could it be that they're ashamed of their own party's candidate for president?"

Throw in a line about how so many GOP candidates are declining the opportunity to watch J-Mac accept the nomination and the ad writes itself.

Mr. Wimpy Tries to Get Back To Washington...

Mr. Wimpy rung his hands often, while the Bush pitbulls ripped the country apart.

I think Mr. Wimpy best find another line of work.

Pit Bulls don't like Mr. Wimpys.

Mr Wimpy put all his eggs in the PitBull's basket and now wants to trot home with a few intact.

Mr. Wimpy is a loser and has only his inaction and past history to ponder.

Gooood bye, Mr. Wimpy.

I don't think he means it when he said the "Straight Talk" of McCain. You wouldn't want to involve your self in that trainwreck.

Yeah, that "straight talk" crap caught my attention too. Why do that to yourself on purpose? Jeez-Louise!

can someone please tell this republican he's not fooling anyone? featuring countless black people in your ad doesn't make us forget that the GOP hates minorities.

Giving Senator Gordon Smith the benefit of the doubt, you cannot lump him with the GOP xenophobics.

You have to admit that a dyed in the wool GOP would never come close to uttering something good about Obama.

shays is a full bodied repug -

comes with all the baggage

Connecticut will boot him in the next election - guaranteed

One of the things that Obama talks about is attempting to create an atmosphere where partisan ship doesn't reign. I personally think its a good sign to see Shay use both a Democrat and a Republican in his ad. He complements both men and agrees that he thinks they each have a point with which he agrees. What is wrong with that? And Surprise, there are Republicans who know a few black people just as there are some Democrats who don't. I know nothing about Shay, but the assumptions about his ad could be just as wrong as they could be right.

Hope he is being honorable...it would be great!

I am a die hard Dem from the state of CT and am supporting Barack all the way. Shays isn't my Congressman but I can say he is a decent man. He's one of the only Republicans I would think twice about tossing out just b/c of his party affiliation.
I would be happy to keep the other 4 dems in office and Shays down in Fairfield County. Believe me, he's more of a Dem than anything.

You can't have it both ways. if it were me, I would be embarrassed to claim any common ground with McCain.

He's a republican, he needs to stay in tune with his constituency as well as reaching independents. I think it's a smart move, even McBush is nowhere near the face for the "Straight Talk Express."

Much better to let that drift around on it's own and giggle in private. After all, we want more of those ads showing up, they won't if the RNC panics and comes down like a ton of bricks.

What I think people are overlooking in these ad's is that republicans are "proving" that Obama did cross the isle to work with opponents on legislation.

I am hoping that at least three moderate Republicans make it to the Senate. The idea of trying to find common ground with the rabid right neo-conservatives is not even worth considering.

From the very start I thought that the Democrates should absolutely hammer the Repubicans for their incompetence and greed. Then after the eletion the olive branch could be extended to any remaining moderates.

It doesn't really work that way in practice. Moderate Republicans become more intransigent, more conservative, when their party is in the minority. And the "why" of that makes sense when you think it through. They hold more power within their group (Republicans) when they are seen to hold fast to their party's ideals. As Republicans, if they cross over to join the Democratic majority, there is no pay-off.

It might work the way you think if these people really were in the job to serve the people, their constituents. But for the most part they're not. In the course of my lifetime, serving in Congress has evolved into a position from which a person can attain great wealth and power. There were always a few who took advantage of the possibilities, but there was always active oversight and policing. That's gone. Most in Congress are there for themselves and if their home districts vote them out, they don't go home to live and work -- They stay in DC and parlay their congressional experience into something bigger for themselves.

Shays's record is a case study in "Republican party self-interest", and hopefully the voters in his home district will deliver a Democrat to represent them.

The republicans whether moderate or crazy have stuck together as a block to prevent any and all legislation for the past two years. I just want every possible senate seat taken by a democrat. They may not all be honest either, but they will also stick with the party and we need 60 seats to block republican fillibusters. If you live in a state with a senate seat up for reelection, please donate and do all you can to see that a democrat takes your senate seat. It will be tight and close but if we can hold the House, take the White House and take 60 seats in the Senate, we can turn a lot of things around very quickly! And a lot of things need to be turned around!
