BAGHDAD — Several thousand supporters of anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr protested Friday against an emerging U.S.-Iraqi security agreement, saying it would turn Iraq into a U.S. colony.

The march in the southern city of Kufa came a day after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad to discuss the deal, which includes a gradual withdrawal of U.S. forces.

Under a draft agreement, American combat troops would pull out of major Iraqi cities by next June and leave Iraq by 2011, according to Iraqi officials familiar with the document.

The schedule could be modified if the two governments agree, and the pact has not been approved by either the Iraqi Cabinet or the parliament, which has the final decision.

Al-Sadr, who lives in Iran but retains significant political clout in Iraq, strongly opposes the U.S. military presence. Al-Sadr and other critics fear that the pullout deal will bind the U.S. and Iraq in a long-term security relationship, instead of restoring Iraqi sovereignty.

In Kufa, about 2,000 Sadrists marched after Friday noon prayers, chanting, "No to America," and raising pictures of al-Sadr. They held up banners reading "The dubious agreement means a permanent colonization of Iraq" and "Iraq is not a U.S. colony."

An aide to al-Sadr, Sheik Dia al-Shawki, told the worshippers that the emerging deal goes against the will of the Iraqi people.

In Sadr City, a sprawling Shiite slum and al-Sadr's stronghold in Baghdad, preacher Sayyid al-Battat criticized what he said was an ambiguous agreement "that the Iraqi people know nothing about."

A key point of contention has been the issue of jurisdiction over Americans in Iraq, as the Iraqi forces assume greater responsibility.

The draft agreement says that private U.S. contractors would be subject to Iraqi law, unlike at present, but American negotiators held firm on U.S. troops remaining under U.S. jurisdiction.

Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Hamoud Bidan provided more details Friday, telling CNN that jurisdiction would be determined by a joint legal committee in cases of U.S. citizens who commit major crimes against Iraqi civilians.

The deputy minister also reiterated that June 30 is the deadline for a troop withdrawal from Iraqi cities.

In other developments Friday, Iraqi forces carried out an arrest raid in Sadr City. The forces moved in as worshippers headed to a local mosque for dawn prayers, said Ali al-Moussawi, a spokesman for al-Sadr's office in the area. Soldiers shot and killed one of al-Sadr's guards when he tried to escape arrest, al-Moussawi said. Another guard was arrested, he said.

Army officials had no immediate comment.

The Iraqi army won control of Sadr City in May, after weeks of battles with al-Sadr's now largely disbanded militia.

Also Friday, a court spokesman said an Iraqi court imposed the death sentence in absentia on a former Sunni culture minister for his role in an attack on a Sunni politician that killed his two sons.

The Baghdad criminal court imposed the sentence Wednesday on Asad Kamal al-Hashimi after convicting him of the Feb. 5, 2005, attack, according to a spokesman for the Iraqi Higher Judicial Council, Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar.

Al-Hashimi has been a fugitive since he was accused of planning the ambush against secular Sunni politician Mithal al-Alusi. Al-Alusi was wounded and his sons were killed in the western Baghdad attack.

Al-Hashimi has one month to file an appeal.

What the hell happened to the days when American politicians were smart (well at least when they looked and seem smart)?

1.) Bush, Cheney, McCain, Rice, et.al. lie to us and the world about Iraqi WMDs and the need to wage a preemptive war.

2.) Hundreds of thousands of dead and injured Iraqis, 4,100+ dead American servicemen, and the American economy is in tatters. (At least the surge is "working" - only 20 dead Americans in Iraq this month?)

3.) At some point, the U.S. stops the occupation of iraq, but #s 1. and 2. are still facts.

I sure am glad we had that wonderful foreign policy experience that McBush keeps talking about. Imagine what would have happened if we'd had some "dumb" Democrat in charge, like Al Gore or John Kerry, instead of Dubya and his friends. But at least we have a chance to continue the insanity, with McBush. Why change course in the middle of a clusterf*ck?

2011 Pull out ? Thats a dream of Bushs and Ms Rice, that will mean another Trillion of the American's taxpayer money and you can bet ole John McCain will get one of the red ink pens that Bush hands out after the signing. If Obama and Pelosi goes along with this, bye bye USA.

Americans need to understand that contrary to the over hyped claims about the escalation/'surge', Iraq is relatively quiet; BECAUSE IRAQIS HAVE AN EXPECTATION THAT THE USA IS ABOUT TO END THE OCCUPATION.

If the UNPROVOKED colonization of Iraq is dragged out by the wild bush-McCaint desire for timeless occupation, then look for Iraqis to flare up again.

There can be no long term US presence in Iraq without continued upheavals and 'death to Americans'!

Welcome to the US-created version of the PLO/Hezbollah/Islamic Jihad. Fanatical Muslim intransigence has poisoned Israeli-Arab realtions for 60 years. This is only the beginning of a long, unproductive struggle that could have been totlally avoided in the first place. Buck fush.

There is nothing to expect from this administration, led by a man who doesn't think that America has problems. It's hard to believe, almost eight years of these characters....

Too bad most comments regard this article relative to a position taken by a candidate they like or don't like, turning into political fodder.

This is the US version of having your cake and eating it too.
We have 'pulled out" of Iraqi cities.
We have stayed the course until victory.

Sorry, but this is about Iraq and the Iraqis.

The Sadrists have, since day one, decried the invasion and occupation of their beloved, sovereign country. They are the nationalists still defending their country. The resistance.
They hated Saddam much more than we did.

They will not accept another possible four years of America's occupation.
I doubt very much that the Iraqi people will either.

Some of the politicians, those close to the American-Iraqi $$teat, might be per$uaded to support this abomination.

But, Iraq-loving Iraqis will not stand for it.

This is not a timetable, folks.
This is one of them there modern time-horizons kind of things - you know, like the horizon is ALWAYS THERE, but never reached.

I predict the failure of this agreement.
Either it will be voted down, or its supporters will be voted out.

Having no good reason to invade is enough reason to depart ASAP.
I am with the Sadrists on that.

the colonization of iraq is a done deal. 2011 is just some arbitrary date 3 years away. 3 more years to oppress iraq into a colony. antiwar liberals got run over. democrats capitulated from day one. if you wanted america to be a bunch of low wage workers supporting a gigantic military looking for trouble- congratulations. you got it. it's a done deal. obama's ready for the next push into afghanistan-pakistan. liberals and progressives will become even more pathetic in their slavish apologies for obama's domestic spying and illegal war than they were in their mealy-mouth masochistic whining about bush. obama will require tens of billions for his own military plans plus consolidating bush oil colonialism. congressional liberals will lie down like dogs. bye bye health care, jobs, and education. just an endless wasteland of giant flags and illiterate kids. endless army-flag bs before any public gathering of any kind. big red necks bulging out from chinese-made uniforms everywhere. ohio will eat gravel before it will question being impoverished for foreign war. iraq is your kind of war. gop is your kind of party. and russia is your kind of country.

We'll see more war long before we ever get out of Iraq, and our Troops there will be subject to attack and if prophecy holds true there will be a great flood when the Euphrates bursts it's banks and runs dry flooding all of Iraq from Baghdad to Basra...washing much of our troops and equipment away sinking into the dried silt, which is what we call sand in Iraq..!

The changes and conflict with Russia in Georgia and potential attack upon Iran only reinforces the likelihood of all this...and then the balance of power of the world will be changed forever and not for the good...

Bush will do harm and damage to our nation of Biblical proportions..!

I am confused - is this the "not soon enough" protest, the "whatever you do, we are against it" protest, or the "we need to protest or else we lose our street cred" protest?

you're not confused- you're just unaware of what a protest is. there is no protest. everyone has aquiesced since day 1. is "street cred" something white people think black people say- or what? there is no protest and no opposition. there are only a few people restating moral objections to attacking other countries. there is no party, no movement, and no protest. there never has been. you have never seen a protest unless you were in LA for immigration day. even that was nothing to dc '70 or chi '68.

you are mentally deficient. I make a comment that is both a criticism of the poorly written news story that fails to explain what is actually happening in any logical way and a poke in the ribs of the Sadrists whose political message has been losing coherence in Iraq ever since his arch rivals in power (Malaki) cut a secret backroom deal with Ahmadinejad in March of this year making Malaki Tehran's sweetheart (and leaving Sadr in the cold) and you feel compelled to post some B S about whites and blacks and some wierd "I know Protest" comment? Get a clue.
