Woody Allen: Scarlett Johansson Is Not My Muse

LOS ANGELES -- For years, Scarlett Johansson has been dubbed Woody Allen's, muse and while the veteran director greatly admires his "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" starlet, he made it quite clear to Pop Tarts that Johansson is not his central source of inspiration.

"It is silly -- she's in no way my muse, but she is one of the great American actresses," Allen said at the film's recent Los Angeles premiere.

And while the newly engaged Johansson said she hasn't started planning her wedding to Ryan Reynolds just yet, she did tell Pop Tarts that learning to love another special somebody was the first challenge she had to overcome before committing herself to someone else.

"I'm just a big believer in 'you must love yourself before you can love anybody else,' and I think for me that breeds the most inspired relationships," Scarlett said. "It's hard for me to have any proclamation about the right kind of love or how to love, because relationships are so complicated and there are so many ways to love. On one hand, there's obsessive love and committed love and the love that friends just have for one another."

I seriously doubt Johansson is Woody's muse. He's married--which is something that couldn't be said until relatively recently given his age--and has been in the company of enough beautiful women that Johansson is unlikely to be tempting to him based on looks alone. My impression is that they just like working together.
It's true that Woody's work is a lot duller than it was in his earlier years, but let's face it: he's been a working actor, writer, and director since the 1960s, producing a staggering volume of material, including a few classics. Anyone would be hard-pressed to consistently make great movies over such a span. When one considers that he releases a new movie EVERY YEAR, his accomplishment becomes that much more impressive.
What's underappreciated about Woody is the fact that he's an actor's director. The number of major stars and character actors who've been in his movies number in the dozens, maybe hundreds. They don't act in his movies for the money, since they get paid union scale, nor just for the artistic cache, although that's undoubtedly a major factor, but because he has a reputation for being enjoyable to work with. That's probably why Johansson first auditioned for him.

C'mon beautiful 'girls' hook up all the time with old buzzards all the time, that is still the way of the world. Just because Woody looks like a schemiel and did 30 years ago doesn't mean he ain't attractive. He's got power and charisma, yes, charisma.

If my daughter said she was dating Woody Allen, hmmmmm, what would I do??? If my daughter were an actress, I would say, gee, when are you available for lunch, or something like that.

It is still a mans world in the sense that money and prestige matters. But it is a woman's world (however shortlived) in the beauty department.

Problem for women - we are not necessarily born pretty while an ugly guy like Woody can skate on his talent (please, he does have talent).

So, to all those young women out there, try to develop your brains but if you've got the face, etc, then, I say .. .

Perhaps Scarlett can resurrect the Woody we knew and loved. Doubtful.

I do too. I don't think people know what a muse is. It means inspiration. And there's no evidence that Woody needs anything other than his own genius for inspiration.

Moreover, Scarlett is just a kid who talks "like" this and "like" that and who is not formally educated. This doesn't detract from any acting skills but it hardly qualifies her for a muse.

Allen Konigsburg is a moderately talented but prolific old perv. who is extremely overrated.

IMHO He has made only two movies of note:

Annie Hall
Hannah and Her Sisters

This is quite surprising when you consider the freedom he has enjoyed from studio meddling, as well as continued financial support and a steady stream of quality actors who agree to work at scale.

One would expect better product.

Woody also re-uses an old character, Dr. Bernardo in a later one as well. Overall a very unfunny movie, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex" does have some good one-liners, and the sequence with Bernardo is the best - partly because it's so outrageously warped. (Dr Frankenstein couldn't hold a candle to Dr Bernardo; I'll leave it at that...) And partly due to John Carradine's terrific delivery of some really bizarre material. Talk about a good mating between writer and actor, ROTFLMAO!!
