It's 3:31 a.m. EST and a text message just came in on my phone:

Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee. Watch the first Obama-Biden rally live at 3pm ET on www.BarackObama.com. Spread the word!

Very exciting! Everyone's been waiting for this text for days, sleeping with their blackberries and on frenziedly trying to puzzle out who's been in and who's been out. Yesterday, Andrea Mitchell announced on "Hardball" that she had it on good authority that Tim Kaine and Evan Bayh were out of the running, and the Biden-for-Veep bet in the VP prediction markets was way ahead. The networks jumped on it all night, with Fox and CNN continually cutting back to the scrum of journos camped out at Biden's house (while MSNBC ran taped programming). Then it was announced that Hillary Clinton was out of it, too. (Not overly surprising.)

The Biden speculation was at a fever pitch as it became more and more obvious that it was him — a Secret Service detail was sent to his house; his office sprang to life. John King made the call first on CNN, followed by Steve Chaggaris on CBS; a CNN email alert came in at 12:53 a.m. followed by a New York Times alert at 1:05 a.m. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign was silent, at least where texting was concerned. The confirmatory message eventually came in at 3:31 a.m.

But at that point, it had blown the story: The whole point was for the Obama campaign to tell the voters directly who the VP would be (and to get their contact info, natch). Now the stunt has been a little bit upstaged — it's not such a revelation to text people three hours after the story has become basically a done deal. (Look for a little backlash on that, and maybe a little MSM gloating.) But for all their impressive leak-proofing and careful planning, they don't seem to have planned for the possibility of a leak, which might have enabled them to move quickly to release the text and regain control of the story.

Still, it's not like they needed an engraved invitation. As our friend and traveling companion Glynnis MacNicol says: "The lesson here? If you want to own the story probably best to jump on the send button once the MSM surrounds your super-secret VP choice's house with camera crews."

Indeed. Well, anyway, it's official and now we have the text to prove it. Here it is in all its LCD-powered glory below.

Update:
Not everyone got the text at the same time — traveling pal Glynnis MacNicol of FishbowlNY received it at 9:44 a.m. ET this morning.

Also, just to clarify for some of the commenters who felt this was a small bone to pick with the Obama campaign — you're right. This text message gimmick was just that — a gimmick — and it was a smart one — but it was also specifically meant to do an end-run around the media. It doesn't mean it wasn't a brilliant strategy for getting a phone number database or generating excitement. I have pointed both out before.

But also, don't forget that midnight for the east coast is 9 p.m. for the West Coast, and there's a whole country in between that could easily have been watching the news before bed on a Friday night. Or checked their email for news alerts from CNN or the New York Times. Or been out partying and checked their Twitter and seen the news. (see here: http://www.tweetscan.com/index.php?s=Biden&u=). So the MSM did scoop the Obama campaign here, even if it was at the eleveth hour. On the whole, the idea was a great one though, and the discipline of the Obama campaign was impressive. But they did seem to have been caught flat-footed when the news finally came out.

Sending the text at 3 a.m. was sort of genius though.

It was really stupid worthless text I got at 2:44am CT.
Thursday night , prime-time, would have been best I was out with work colleages and the message
then I could have shared the news and my support.
Instead the only person I could have told would have hit me with a pillow had I the courage
to share the news.

??? ANYONE HAVE A CLUE WHY IT WAS DONE LIKE THIS??? It must have been planned
for the morning but that really was to late...
Next year someone will write a book and we will find out the SNAFU.

My husband received his text message at approx. 2:30 Central time. I didn't receive a text message because I missed the box which needed to be checked for the text. However, I did receive the announcement by email.

I got the text message around 3 in the morning..but I already knew because of the leak. I was kind of pissed that I didn't learn via text quite frankly. But I'm elated with the choice of Biden.

Why are most of us missing the point over the controversy of the announcement? McCnn was so proud of themselves for foiling the timing of the text announcement. I want to know who at the DNC leaked the info to them. Why are folks saying we may never know who it was? We need to know who it was to hold them accountable. Why would we trust these people on larger matters if they can't be trusted with small ones? Obama was betrayed; direct your frustrations to the leakers and MSM. Please post any valid info as to the chain of events that led up to this sorry excuse to criticize the Obama campaign.

He made the decision and I'm sure shared it with only a few so I would look to his campaign. I really doubt he or anyone in his inner circle called McC's campaign and shared. It is O's campaign's fault no matter how you look at it. Personally, I don't see the big deal.

What I find most stupid is the phrase "who told (so and so) on the condition of anonymity so as not to preempt...", as if revealing something anonymously is not preemption.

I never got the text message. I did receive one confirmation message and an update message, but nothing regarding the official announcement of Biden.

i'd be curious to see if there's going to be any kind of poll on this. What percentage of people got the text message?

I can't wait to see Obama send out Biden as his attack dog, a role he's taken on before:

It's 3A.M. and Obama is getting desperate. He's tanking in the polls and was too thoughtful at Saddleback.

SO he calls a 35 year Washington insider to make up for his total lack of experience.

This is our time--a change is coming! Guess not.

so being thoughtful is a bad thing?

WOW!!!!

Ya know, I wanna hear Biden say Noun/Verb/POW ala Rudy Noun/Verb/9-11. It was the best zinger of the campaign. For that, I'm glad he's back.

I am still waiting on the text message. What a serious let down when allegedly they wanted to roll out the text first. Maybe it's a T-Mobile thing.

I blame the person at the DNC (I guess) who spilled the beans a few hrs early. I got my email sometime after 4 am. I think since it was deliberate misdirection, someone should get fired for spoiling the silence O's ppl have kept for days.

I meant "wasn't" misdirection. I kinda hoped maybe O was doing that, just so he could keep his plan intact. Very mad at the person who leaked.

First let me say that the MSM didn't upstage Obama's announcement for me. I went to bed a little before midnight (EST) after hearing that the 2 people I didn't want on the ticket had been eliminated. Then I heard that the SS had been dispatched to Biden's house and "Operation Move Granny Biden" had begun - I knew at that point I could safely go to bed and await my official text from Obama, which for me came at exactly 3:14am. Now if that had been anyone else calling me, barring an emergency, at that time of the morning (on a Saturday) they would have gotten cursed out. But, I checked the phone, which was placed next to me in bed, read the message, smiled then turned on the news to see how they were scrambling around. Of course the media was stepping all over themselves claiming that they "were the 1st to report" and "you heard it here 1st". I said to myself, no I heard it from Obama "1st", turned off the T.V. and slipped back into my slumber. I woke up this morning absolutely "Drunk" with excitement. I am COMPLETELY down with the Obama/Biden '08 ticket.

I can save myself time and say my story is nearly the same as yours. It's all good!

Ditto! To all those who are pouting about the text messages coming out after the news was leaked to the media -- please grow up. The news is so spectacularly good that it doesn't matter when we got it or where it came from! We now have the strongest possible team -- let's just support them to the best of our ability and let them mop the floor with the McCain campaign!!!

That was a fun and creative idea to build suspense and Obama's campaign stuck to the plan perfectly. (Probably most of the country was sleeping through CNN's big break anyway).

I think they probably learned something about timing--that as soon as Kaine and Bayh knew they weren't it, they would blab to the media. And that as soon as others were notified (top Dems, Dean, probably H/Bill, etc), some of the more lukewarm supporters would blab to the press.

And that the press would stake out everyone's home for 48 hours and report when the Secret Service arrived (and do everything else they could to spoil Obama's timing of the announcement).

It was a creative use of technology and will be great as a nation-wide reminder on election day.

Which reminds me, Did McCain ever learn how to get online by himself? He's missing all the fun!
