Democratic vice presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., waves to supporters as he is introduced as Barack Obama's running mate outside the Old State Capitol Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, in Springfield, Ill. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

DENVER — Barack Obama says Joe Biden is ready to step in as president. He's not bad in the role of attack dog, either, wasting no time gnawing at GOP rival John McCain.

"He will have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at" when considering his own economic future, Biden said _ a blistering reference to McCain's embarrassing admission, particularly during a period of financial turmoil, that he didn't know how many homes he and his ultra-wealthy wife own.

Named Obama's running mate before dawn Saturday, a feisty Biden appeared with the top of the ticket at an afternoon rally in Springfield, Ill.

He gave a speech filled with subtle jabs and outright punches at McCain, a sharp tone intended to send a message to nervous Democrats: Never fear, the vice presidential attack dog is here _ and he's itching for a fight.

As polls show the race tightening, Democrats increasingly have been questioning whether Obama can play the game of brass-knuckle politics against McCain. Some are fearing a repeat of 2004 when a Republican-aligned group called the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth got the best of slow-to-respond John Kerry and his soft-touch No. 2 John Edwards.

Biden, however, left no doubt he's comfortable going for the jugular.

In one breath, he called McCain "genuinely a friend of mine" over a 35-year period. In the next, the Democrat skewered his decades-old Republican colleague and linked McCain to the unpopular President Bush at every turn.

"The American dream under eight years of Bush and McCain, that American dream is slipping away," Biden said _ suggesting that McCain, too, served in the White House during that period and overlooking the times when the Arizona senator broke from his own party's standard-bearer.

Story continues below

He jabbed at McCain, a Vietnam prisoner of war who is arguably the county's most vocal supporter of the U.S. mission in Iraq, next to Bush. Said Biden: "These times require more than a good soldier. They require a wise leader. A leader who can deliver."

The Delaware senator also used McCain's own words against him to argue that the Republican can't change the country when he offers more of the same, though he left out details and cherry-picked quotes as he sought to make his case.

He noted that McCain voted with Bush some 90 percent of the time and read McCain quotes that he said has been "totally in agreement and support of President Bush" on "the most important issues of our day," and that "in the Bush administration we make great progress economically."

Biden also quoted McCain saying "no one has supported President Bush in Iraq more than I have."

At the same time, Biden charged, without backing up his assertions, that McCain "signed on to Bush's scheme of privatizing Social Security" and said McCain continued to "support tax breaks for companies who ship our jobs overseas" after 3 million manufacturing jobs disappeared.

Said Biden: "You can't change America when you know your first four years as president will look exactly like the last eight years of George Bush's presidency."

Striking at the heart of what McCain holds most dear, his integrity and honor, Biden accused McCain of pandering to the GOP's conservative base and engaging in negative politics he has shunned before.

"I've been disappointed in my friend, John McCain, who gave in to the right wing of his party and yielded to the very 'Swift Boat' politics that he once so deplored," Biden said. "Folks, campaigns for presidents are a test of character and leadership."

He insinuated McCain has failed that test.

Yet, Biden overlooked moves Obama has made to court the Democratic Party's liberal base and the Illinois senator's own recent flare-ups of hard-hitting politics.

Biden's most direct hit came as he raised McCain's housing gaffe, which had caused the campaign to spiral to a low point on Thursday.

Obama's campaign seized on the remark and used it to assail McCain as out of touch. McCain's campaign hit back by raising Obama's ties to scandal-scarred Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko and his role in Obama's Chicago property.

One of the poorest members of the Senate, Biden lamented how people like him sit at the kitchen table at night worrying about how to get by in tough economic times. "That's not a worry John McCain has to worry about. It's a pretty hard experience. He will have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at."

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers hit back: "Of course Senator Biden is comfortable on the attack _ he spent the entire primary highlighting Barack Obama's inexperience and failed judgment on national security."

But that was then. And this, call it Target McCain, is now.

This article is typical of the once-objective AP under Fournier and Singleton. Notice the author does not a miss a single opportunity to subtly cast both Biden and Obama in a negative light. This trend is scarier than Fox News, because of its stealth nature and the fact that AP articles are used in a wide range of respectable news sources everyday, including the Huffington Post. Maybe HP should consider dumping AP.

The American Dream is only alive and well for people who have alot of money - not the average, working people across the country working two jobs trying to make ends meet. The playing field is not even - it's unfair, unbalanced and only for the priveleged.

The Amerikan dream is slipping away under Bush and President Dick Cheney?

The dream is gone! The nation is totall-lie bankrupt. Our military is bogged down and broken in Iraq-nam... while our borders remain undefended from a massive people invasion from Mexico. The gap between the haves and have $nots has never been as wide as it is now... with the plutocratic ruling class getting richer by the hour. Mean, mean, meanwhile... our currency is becoming worthless and the Amerikan economy is on the verge of collapse from peak oil... and from hyper-inflationary pressures born from massive and irresponsible deficit spending. Furthermore... the whole world sees Amerika as a pariah, the Amerikan consumer pig people in denial... or worse, absolutely clueless. People who supported Bush were either asleep or they're traitors to American traditions and American constitutional precepts. This is why America has become Amerika, a nation of sheep ass-leap!

Joe is exactly what Obama needs to attack McCain and his swift boat neo-con idiots at americanissuesproject.org who were paid thousands by the McCain campaign committee.

The American dream didn't slip away, we sold it to the highest bidders and the lowest of the low. Until Congress starts to fillibuster the illegal demands, bills that continue to threaten our health, life, jobs, safety, civil rights, nothing will change. It has to really begin with the removal of Nancy Pelosi. We need someone in Congress willing to represent the American People. If we can get Obamma and Biden elected, fix congress, our dreams have a chance to come back to us stronger than ever. But it will take both sides to reach this goal.
McCain only looks for issues that he thinks Obamma might have been connected to, but that is caca in comparison to what the real problems are. He refuses to admit Bush and co raped the American people, and told us to say thank you after. The guy is a mentall case. He refuses to allow anythin g to change as he might lose his financial intrests or connections. The public has lost far more.

Pelosi controlled Obama's nomination and she took Impeachment of Bush off the table. I do'nt understand her tatics.

She knew there was really nothing to impeach the President for. I mean... really? The Iraq War? Please... Congress gave the President their "Ok" for it and continued to fund it even to this day. Kinda hard to impeach a President for something you gave your "Ok" for.

It's not rocket science. It's politics. You do me a favor, I do you a favor. That's how it works in Washington. Even if O becomes President, not much will change. It takes FAR more than a President to change Washington. President Bush said the same thing 8 years ago. It's a continuous cycle of saying whatever the voters want to hear to get elected. Don't fool yourself into believing O or McCain will be any different.

Its simple, Pelosi won't take impeachment off the table as she is tied to the Bush administration. She can fully demand impeachment, by law is required to do so as crimes have been committed. Not to do so is to act in collusion. But if she went after Bush and co, she also would have to go after dems as well. To do that would damage her party's chances of ever winning another election so she stays quiet. The lady is dispicable. She is also a coward. Bush was happy she got it as he knew she would never go against him. Not forcing any bills the dems wanted, letting them slide by and passing Bush's corrupt bills proves she is no dem, rather someone who is a fake. She didn't control Obamma's nomination. That was the DNC and the tri lalteral commission. The threezies wanted him and Biden.

If you have additional information not revealed years ago regarding McCain & Keating, go ahead & reveal it. Corruption?

I was a resident of Phoenix when this happened. Alot of it was buried with the help
of William Rehnquist and the local City AND State politicians. It was a BIG mess,
enough to cause the local Phoenix economy to suffer it's own localized depression.
I was there I know!

Long ago means nothing. You get involved with corruption you are tied to it forever. They continue to feed off of you like vultures, as they have info on you they can reveal to others. The kinds of corruption they were tied to? Some of the players may have gone to jail, died, but the families live on. Their lawyers live on and pass the cases onto the next cappos. This is how they work. McCain I guarantee you is still under thier thumbs as is she. If you were to go after a paper trail, you would see names of companies that gave to his campaign, many which are shell companies. In order to remain hidden, they pay him off, vice versa, take the tax write offs, and nobody is any the wiser. If they can't be found, they can't be revealed, and he can plead he never met them. You have to know how this works to understand how they keep info hidden. He is playing a dangerous game.

We're both Biden and Obama in the senate during Bush's term in office? Why didn't they do something about the slipping of the American dream then? Not like the President can really 'do" anything anyway.

Ahh, you have to hand it to the Karl Rove Disciples. They create ridiculous rabble-rousing ads that are incendiary enough that the MSM keeps playing them as "news" -- therefore tripling their viewing audience and maximize their dollar amount.

It may be "smart" strategy, but it reinforces their image as 'unscrupulous'.

16 When your position appears hopeless, your entire audience is laughing at you, and you've lost all credibility (and perhaps even won a Kook of the Month) threaten everyone within proximity with a lawsuit. You don't need to actually prepare a lawsuit, just make the threat.

18 Open numerous accounts under other names, then post agreeable responses to your own messages from those accounts. Everybody knows that the only reason anybody disagrees with you is that they like the belong to "the group" and have no independent thought of their own. Just manufacture a group of people who agree with you.

20 Refer to anyone who doggedly uncovers your latest little scams, time after time as "stalkers." Write to their sysadmins and demand their accounts be removed for net abuse.

21 Remember to occasionally tell your opponents that you've handed all the information you've collected about them to the local police/Mounties/FBI who were extremely interested and grateful for the advance notice of where to find criminals like you. You don't actually have to collect any information, or send it to anybody, but this will keep your opponents edgy, and make them paranoid. Mention that the police/Mounties/FBI are closing in on them, and that their day of reckoning is just moments away.

The American dream is slipping away because senators who are in the pockets of banking corporations drafted a bill shifting the balance of power to those corporations in ways previously unheard of... Credit card companies are now able to practice predatory lending tactics with no fear of consequences.

I wonder what Senator was primarily responsible for that?

Oh yeah... Joe "Bankrupcy Bill" Biden.

Obama lost my vote with this VP pick.

Good luck in 2012 dems... Pick a REAL progressive next time.
