CARDIFF, Wales — Even at 50, the queen of pop just can't stop courting controversy.

As Madonna kicked off her international "Sticky and Sweet" tour Saturday night, she took a none-too subtle swipe at the presumptive Republican nominee for U.S. president.

Amid a four-act show at Cardiff's packed Millennium Stadium, a video interlude carried images of destruction, global warming, Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, Zimbabwe's authoritarian President Robert Mugabe _ and U.S. Senator John McCain. Another sequence, shown later, pictured slain Beatle John Lennon, followed by climate activist Al Gore, Mahatma Gandhi and finally McCain's Democratic rival Barack Obama.

The rest of the show had the usual Madonna fixtures: sequins, fishnets, and bondage-style outfits drawn from the 3,500 items of clothing reportedly whipped together by 36 designers specifically for the tour. Dancers sauntered across stage in top hats and tail coats, and Madonna tried her hand at break-dancing and pole-dancing.

Some 40,000 fans _ many in pink cowboy hats and boas _ were treated to a heavy metal version of "Borderline," while "La Isla Bonita" served as backdrop for a flamenco routine. The show, billed as a musical mishmash of "gangsta pimp," Romanian folk, rave, and dance _ was an homage to Madonna's continuous reinventions over the past three decades.

She took a playful take on her variegated career, mocking dancers dressed as her previous incarnations _ including the "Material Girl" and "Blonde Ambition" _ before they sank into the stage to the tune of "She's Not Me." Madonna finished off the concert with her thumping "Give it 2 Me" from her new urban-inspired album, "Hard Candy."

If the world's top-selling female recording artist is still writhing, shaking and shimmying with the best of them, her personal life has recently been unsettled. Earlier this summer her brother Christopher Ciccone published a gossipy memoir, and she has faced speculation about her relationship with New York Yankee slugger Alex Rodriquez and rumors that her marriage to British filmmaker Guy Ritchie is on the rocks _ which she hotly denies.

Madonna's tour was eagerly anticipated in Britain, where the pop superstar has made her home, and fans weren't disappointed.

"We enjoyed it to the max," said Ruth Henson, 24, who works in human resources in London. "Madonna, considering she's now 50, is so fit. She did a really good job."

Following Cardiff's opening concert, "Sticky and Sweet" moves across Europe, hitting London's Wembley Stadium on Sept. 11 and Paris on Sept. 20. From there, it goes to North America in October before wrapping up Dec. 18 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

It is Madonna's first tour since striking a deal with concert promoter Live Nation Inc. worth an estimated $120 million over 10 years. The partnership gives Live Nation a stake of future music and music-related business she generates, including touring, merchandising and albums. Madonna's last tour was her 2006 "Confessions" _ in which she staged a mock crucifixion only a few miles (kilometers) from the Vatican.

Perhaps, but at least she earned the money to buy those homes, instead of sponging off a spouse's inherited wealth.

Oh wait. Exxon Johnny was a POW. I'm not allowed to criticize him.

90% of military acadamy graduates earn more than $250k per/ yr. after leaving the military. BTW perhaps you should look into the inherited wealth behind; Kerry, Peolosi, Boxer, Feinstein, etc. before you make such outrageous claims.

Funny, I don't remember anyone asking how many houses Kerry owns a few years back. Now that's all you people talk about.

McCain could earn alot more than what he gets paid in the Senate in the private sector.

I take it you didn't vote for Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004, or is it just suddenly now you have an aversion to politicians with wealth?

She might. have multiple houses..but she gives back...she doesn't hoard her money.

Anyone watching the circus in Denver? Absolutely priceless! McCain couldn't buy this kind of political advertisement...I know...Bush/ Cheney are behind this protest right? Yeah...that's it! Ward Churchill actually is working for the Republicans!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:40 PM on 08/24/2008

So far it seems the protests are anti-war, but (mis)directed at the DNC for their inability to force Bush to end it and bring the troops home. You know...you should reserve your comments until after the RNC convention, as we all know there will be many protesters with much to say about the war, economy, high gas and food prices, the overlooked poor, and so on...and so on.

Whoa...that's it...When Madonna tells people not to vote McCain, that's the final word on the subject. You know, I thought I knew enough all on my own...boy was I wrong. I am going right out today and join the Obama team.!

Funny, when Ted Nugent rants to his toothless knuckle-dragger audience about how the "gun grabbers" are coming to rummage through their doublewides looking for firearms, they run right out to vote for the most reactionary candidate they can find.

At least somone seems to be listening to the wisdom of musicians.

I generally hate pop music, but I've seen Madonna twice and it's a great show. Highly recommended.

when you put obama, madonna, berlin, and the forthcoming denver mass adulations together; it really starts to look like "the blue angel"- even down to obama's academic backround and smoking struggles. obviously madonna has been riffing off marlene dietrich for years.

but barack is seeking PERSONAL acceptance- not ideological allegiance. he is a democrat; therefore, he is campaigning not to win- but to be LIKED. democrats want to STAR in the ROLE of presidential candidate. republicans just want the most electoral votes.

EXCUSE ME?!!! She is fifty, she is an artist and like all great artist must she understands her job requires working and constant reincarnations...FIFTY - TOO OLD TO BE AN ARTIST - GIVE ME A BREAK!

HOW can you criticize a successful working mom?! I say hurray for Madonna! Be jubilant and not critical.

I am 56 and just had an art show in downtown in San Francisco this spring...my grandson who is nine often paints with me...should I quit? Your statement is absurd, hints at jealousy and ignorance. Hurray for Madonna! Get a clue Hunt and respect the hard working artists of this country.

This is her chosen profession, and the tour lasts only about 3-4 months. I'm sure Lourdes, Rocco, & little David Banda will be fine, but thanks for your concern on their behalf. If she were too old to remain her standing as a pop icon, why are we still talking about her? I've found over the years that those who claim Madonna is "too old" invariably have problems with their own aging. She doesn't seemed to be fazed by it.

Tina Turner, age 68, is touring this year. Is she also too old? I am not and have never been a Madonna fan. But she should only stop touring when people are no longer willing to lay down hundreds of dollars for a ticket to see her shows or when it is physically prohibitive for her to perform. Whichever comes first.

I agree with Madonna's sentiments. But I think she should retire. Old performers are going to try to hold on as long as they can, held together with botox and bailing wire if necessary. I'd rather watch the young, soft, smooth ones.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:18 PM on 08/24/2008

So you'd rather watch the young, therefore Madonna should retire? Isn't it just easier for you to not click your mouse?

Madonna's "act" is based strongly on sex and sex appeal. If she were simply a great musical performer, I wouldn't care about her age or appearance.

WOW.. so music from say.- Aretha Franklin, The Stones & Jazz greats ( a small few) should hang it up..

They are a part of Americana... they are the drive & inspiration in the young, soft, smooth ones..

I could not disagree with you more on this.. But it is a blog and we are in America (maybe) and everybody has a right to see things differently..

If Madonna were as great as Aretha, the Stones, and the few remaining Jazz greats, she could be in a damn wheelchair for all I care.

The artist mentioned in your post, have modified their perforrmances to fit their age. They are not creaking across the stage trying to pole dance or flopping around on the floor break dancing!

Madonna can tour as long as she wants she can even dance if she wants to. However, she is a fifty years old mother of three. She should consider her family when she designs her tour.

Good for Madonna. We need more entertainers speaking out against repression. When you think about, in the run-up to Fascism the musicians have been strangely quiet, compared to the 60's.

I like her muscles. It isn't easy to look that toned at her age. More power to her.
