McCain Himself Uses POW Experience To Defend Houses

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told CBS News' Katie Couric on Saturday that Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) is a "formidable" but "wise" choice for the Democratic ticket.

Couric asked about McCain's answer when Politico inquired about the number of homes he and his wife, Cindy, own. McCain referred the question to his staff, who said he had at least four. Records show the number could be twice that, depending on how you count the family's properties.

"I am grateful for the fact that I have a wonderful life," McCain said. "I spent some years without a kitchen table, without a chair, and I know what it's like to be blessed by the opportunities of this great nation. Cindy's father, who barely finished high school, went off and distinguished himself in World War II in a B-17 and came back with practically nothing and realized the American dream, and I am proud and grateful for that, and I think he is a role model to many young Americans who serve in the military and come back and succeed.

The way he worded that response is almost worse than playing the POW card. He referred vaguely to spending years without basic things in the past, loosely implying that he has been poor at some point in his life. As awful as the POW experience must have been, we already knew about it and it really has no relevance to his economic status. On the other hand, had he been poor and worked his way up, that would suggest that he might have some basis for understanding and being sympathetic toward the needs of people who do not have so much they don't even need to keep track of the number of houses they own. His remarks about Cindy's father working his way up is another attempt to plant that idea in people's minds.

However, to know where McCain's sympathies lie, one need look no further than his tax proposals, which would benefit seriously wealthy folks like himself MUCH more than anyone else; his "no" votes on any legislation to help regular people, even veterans; his education voucher plan, which is guaranteed to subsidize the wealthy and gut public schools; or his fervor for privatizing everything.

John Don't-Forget-I'm-A-War-Hero McHouses and his wife seem to own three waterfront condos here in San Diego. One in La Jolla worth over a million dollars, and two in Coronado Shores worth over five million. No wonder they're committed to lowering their own taxes even more than bush did by giving the richest 0.1% even more tax breaks. Barry, on the other hand, will lower taxes for people who've never seen a five million dollar waterfront condo, like me, and make those wealthier folks start paying their fair share. Guess that's why their so afraid of him.

Do you remember when Bob Schieffer, on CBS' Face the Nation, was so appalled that Gen. Wesley Clark stated he did not think being a POW was a qualification for President? That started out all the media frenzy slamming Gen. Clark for his remark.

Since Schieffer is moderating one of the debates, do you think he'll make sure McCain gets all the questions beforehand --- after all, McCain was a POW!

I was glad to see Dara Torres show here stuff but that does not mean she should get a break. She showed up knowing that she had to bring it; and she did.
Mc only brings us revisionist history as if he were THE prisoner of war; he was not, there were others some treated worse, some prisoners for longer periods of time.

After being away from his family for 5.5 years, most would think that he'd be reconnecting with the children if not the wife but he was out getting his freak on, guess that is why Cindy got a pre-nup.

As a side note, McCain's new attack ad featuring Hillary Clinton is pretty interesting. I'm sure she is sweating bullets right now over what this ad is going to do to her political career. The commentators have begun to bring up the topic, but she doesn't want to be blamed for the Democrats losing the 2008 presidential campaign. This new ad is only the beginning I'm afraid.

If all POW veterans could use that same excuse .... they'd be rich too. Some don't have homes now and he's using this lame excuse for having homes. Just say I have 12 homes and be done with it. Obviously there are people voting for him that don't have a problem with the homes he OR his wife own.
