Politico:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told CBS News' Katie Couric on Saturday that Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) is a "formidable" but "wise" choice for the Democratic ticket.

...

Couric asked about McCain's answer when Politico inquired about the number of homes he and his wife, Cindy, own. McCain referred the question to his staff, who said he had at least four. Records show the number could be twice that, depending on how you count the family's properties.

"I am grateful for the fact that I have a wonderful life," McCain said. "I spent some years without a kitchen table, without a chair, and I know what it's like to be blessed by the opportunities of this great nation. Cindy's father, who barely finished high school, went off and distinguished himself in World War II in a B-17 and came back with practically nothing and realized the American dream, and I am proud and grateful for that, and I think he is a role model to many young Americans who serve in the military and come back and succeed.

He uses being a POW as an excuse for his behavior and to intimidate and deflect criticism. He used it in his very first election when he was accused of being a carpetbagger

From a series the Arizona Republic ran in 2007.

At a 1982 candidates forum, McCain "snapped," to use his own word, after somebody brought up his residency "for the thousandth time."

Here is what he said:

"Listen, pal. I spent 22 years in the Navy. My grandfather was in the Navy. We in the military service tend to move a lot. We have to live in all parts of the country, all parts of the world. I wish I could have had the luxury, like you, of growing up and living and spending my entire life in a nice place like the first district of Arizona, but I was doing other things. As a matter of fact, when I think about it now, the place I lived longest in my life was Hanoi."

The late Phoenix Gazette political columnist John Kolbe is quoted in Timberg's book as calling McCain's brusque answer "the most devastating response to a potentially troublesome political issue I've ever heard."

McCain recalls in Worth the Fighting For: "Looking back, I think the race was effectively over right then."

One of the first messages out of the McCain campaign, just after Biden was brought on board was :
Prediction that the polls will go up by 15% for Obama/Biden.

(Then they used the old Biden primary quip to try to attack) - it won't work.
Biden has seen Barack mature & become seasoned over these past few months - &
as he said :
Barack Obama has PASSED THE TEST !!
& he has indeed.

What a winning team : Obama/Biden.

The McCain campaign has great reason to be sweating bullets right about now ....: )

Being a POW; although a horrific trauma, does not qualify one for President of the United States. McC has no knowledge of the economy, he's a high falutin multi milionaire with 8+ houses thanks to his heiress wife. You know, the one he cheated with while married to his first wife who was in a horrible auto accident waiting for him to come home from 'Nam.
He would be worse than Bush on foreign policy as he sang Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Iran to the words of Ba-Ba-Ba-Ba-Ba-"Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys and laughed about it cause he can't wait to do it..
McC also made a crude joke about Chelsea Clinton saying that her father was really Janet Reno. I'll just leave it at that. He is a macho military male, and we are trying to get rid of that mentality so we can be respected again by one another, and the world.
Other POWs who were with him in 'Nam DO NOT want him to be President. I think that says it all.

He won't release all his military records (as Wes Clark did), makes you wonder what he has to hide. For someone who doesn't like to talk about it he sure works it in at every opportunity. My dad was a decorated WWII vet, you couldn't get him to talk about it. He tried to volunteer during 'Nam, his reasoning was he made it back the first time, got to raise his family and live his life and if he went maybe some 19 year old kid wouldn't have to go.

John McCain's POW experience would have more of an impact if he demonstrated how his experience allows him to empathize with the thousands of people in the US and around the world who are imrpisoned, abused, hungry and oppressed by powers greater than their own. I don't mean to diminish Mr. McCain's experience, but I have the unfortunate experience of encountering people who struggle everyday to escape from the violence in their homes and communities, who do not have kitchen tables or know where their next meal is coming from. Surviving trauma and fighting for your own life is something thousands of Americans do everyday, outside the confines of war. Living as a POW does not make him a hero, sacrificing for the benefit of others in danger does.

So John McCain speaks of Cindy’s father returning from war “who barely finished high school, went off and distinguished himself in World War II in a B-17 and came back with practically nothing and realized the American dream.” This statement from a man who refused to support the current GI Bill which afforded returning soliders an opportunity to attend college to ‘realize the American dream.’ Lord help us if this man who is completely out of touch with today’s returning vets is elected.

...And I forget to add that Cindy's daddy was also a convicted felcon. Now that's a real American Blue Blood living the American Dream.

Gee Senator, do you really want to use Cindy's dad as a "role model" for our young troops?

He's such a boor a$$.

He has to connect everything to serving in the military or being a POW.

It makes you wonder why he's a rethug since they are all chickenhawks. I guess he just likes to stand out as the martyr.

Travel For Change connects volunteers working for change with sponsors who can help to send them to the states that will decide this election.

If you have any frequent flyer miles that you can donate or know anyone else who might, this is a great way to get more volunteers out there.

I do have miles to donate, but can't figure out how. It looks like you sponsor someone directly? I thought there'd be a pot to put the miles into?
