BEIJING — With help from British star power, China concluded its debut as Olympic host Sunday after 16 days of near-flawless logistics and superlative athletic achievement _ coexisting awkwardly with the government's wariness of dissent and free speech.

A spectacular closing ceremony opened with torrents of fireworks and included a pulsating show-within-a-show by London, host of the 2012 Games. From a stage formed from a red double-decker bus, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page played classic rock hit "Whole Lotta Love" and soccer icon David Beckham booted a ball into the surrounding throng of athletes on the stadium floor.

Then more lyrical music returned, and the Olympic flame atop the stadium was extinguished.

To a large extent, China, an emergent superpower, got what it had craved from these long-sought games: a dominant effort by its athletes to top the gold-medal standings for the first time and almost glitch-free organizing that showcased world-class venues and cheerful volunteers to the largest-ever peaceful influx of foreign visitors.

As a bonus, not just one but two athletes gave arguably the greatest performances in Olympic history _ Michael Phelps with his eight gold medals in swimming, Jamaica's ebullient Usain Bolt with three golds and three world records in the sprints.

The International Olympic Committee, whose selection of Beijing as host back in 2001 was widely questioned, insisted its choice had been vindicated.

"Tonight, we come to the end of 16 glorious days which we will cherish forever," IOC President Jacques Rogge told the capacity crowd of 91,000 at the National Outdoor Stadium, and a global TV audience. "Through these Games, the world learned more about China, and China learned more about the world."

"These were truly exceptional games," he said, before declaring them formally closed.

Story continues below

The head of the Beijing organzing committee, Liu Qi, said the games were "testimony to the fact that the world has rested its trust in China." He called them "a grand celebration of sport, of peace and friendship."

Rogge and the IOC were criticized by human rights groups for their reluctance to publicly challenge the Chinese as various controversies arose over press freedom and detention of dissidents. Athletes shied away from making political statements, and "protest zones" established in Beijing went unused as the authorities refused to issue permits for them.

But the atmosphere was festive at the stadium as fireworks burst from its top rim _ and from locations across Beijing _ to begin the closing ceremony.

After an army band played the Chinese national anthem, hundreds of gayly dressed dancers, acrobats and drummers swirled onto the field, then made room for the athletes, strolling in casually and exuberantly from four different entrances.

China invested more than $40 billion in the games, which it viewed as a chance to show the world its dramatic economic progress. Olympic telecasts achieved record ratings in China and the United States, and the games' presence online was by far the most extensive ever.

Rogge said these Olympics would leave a lasting, positive legacy for China _ improved transportation infrastructure, more grass-roots interest in recreational sports, a more aggressive approach to curbing air pollution and other environmental problems. Smog that enveloped the city early in the games gave way to mostly clear skies, easing fears that some endurance events might be hazardous for the athletes.

American rower Jennifer Kaido of West Leyden, N.Y., said the games exceeded her expectations.

"We were prepared for smog, pollution, demonstrations, but everything has gone very smoothly," she said.

Rogge acknowledged that China, despite promises of press freedom during the games, continued to block access to numerous politically oriented Web sites, including those related to Tibet and the outlawed spiritual movement Falun Gong.

However, he contended that media restrictions were looser during the Olympics than beforehand, "and so we believe the games had a good influence."

Human rights groups disagreed.

"The reality is that the Chinese government's hosting of the games has been a catalyst for abuses, leading to massive forced evictions, a surge in the arrest, detention and harassment of critics, repeated violations of media freedom, and increased political repression," said Sophie Richardson of Human Rights Watch. "Not a single world leader who attended the games or members of the IOC seized the opportunity to challenge the Chinese government's behavior in any meaningful way."

Led by Phelps and Bolt, athletes broke 43 world records and 132 Olympic records during the games. Yet Rogge, who visited every venue, said the most touching moment for him came after the 10-meter air pistol event, when gold medalist Nino Salukvadze of Georgia embraced runner-up Natalia Paderina of Russia even as their two countries' armies fought back in Georgia.

"That kind of sportsmanship is really remarkable," Rogge said.

One American Gold Medalist was missing from the hyperhooplah closing ceremony:
I wondered which nation had won the Decathlon? Why, it was the U.S. BRYAN CLAY!!!
Not one mention in the closing ceremony commentary? Not one photo or video clip? What happened? Did I just miss it? Good looking guy! Is it just that he's camera shy?

Phelps achieved 8 medals in one sport, 8 events over 8 days (not including heats) up and down the same lane basically just stroking, sharing 3 events with relay teammates. (not to put him down or anything)

Clay achieved 1 medal in 10 sports (3 runs, hurdles, throw javelin, discus, shot put, pole vault, high and long jump): 10 events over 2 days (not including heats)

Thank you, Bryan!!!!!

Now who was the Triathlete and the Pentathlete? Oh, boy.

He was supposed to let NBC know that he was going to win so they could have gotten the proper commercial endorsements and lame biographical features ready.

london dragged a lot of the old cliches for their presentation - double decker buses, umbrellas, soccer, puleeze; did you notice the chinese avoided anything cliche in their fabulous presentation - did you even see a dragon? NO. the chinese tried to show you what they really are, too bad the west is getting the olympics back, because it's back to worn out capitalistic cliches, tourist crap to try and make money.

I can't believe that so many posters have gone from "OMG, the Olympics are in China? How horrible!" to "Wow, best opening ceremony ever and so much money spent! NO ONE can match them! How awesome!"

This country with so many human rights violations, taking children from their families for 12 years just to train them for the Olympics, one American murdered during the Olympics, numerous people arrested for attempting to protest and they are getting praised for spending lots of money on ceremonies?? PLEASE!

I agree! From the mountain tops of a rising star to the pits of a nation in decline. It's going to be quite a contrast in 2012. Glad we're not in those cross-hairs.

Sounds like the $40 billion dollar ChiCom propaganda extravaganza really touched your soul.

I, frankly, hope that Britain brings these games back from a pseudo Disney fantasy-land again. As I hope Vancouver does as well.

Unfortunately, I'm sure the corporate interests will try their damnest not to let that happen.

Well said. Who can forget the ceremonies in my city of Atlanta, when they brought out silver-colored pick-up trucks? Semi-classic. And we are still smarting from the crass commercialisation of the entire Olympic brand.

Ah come on Brit-bashers, at least Boris got the chance to fly the flag for us:

Not only that, but it was god to see the Chinese authorities are fans of South Park if this moment from the closing ceremony is anything to go by:

I was totally hooked this Olympics. Thank you, China. Raising the Standard!! (even though you never mentioned it was $40 billion US dollars that paid for it.)

I kept an assessment of all the countries that medaled: 91 at my count out of 205 with 58 achieving at least 1 Gold. That's excellent. I'm particularly proud of Mongolia and Afghanistan.

is leona lewis the best the brits have to offer? that was an awful presentation from the brits. totally cartoonish as against zhang yimou's work of art. the brits could have done better.

the brits dont seem to have the support of their royals either.

No. Leona Lew is is very far from the best we Brits have to offer. She's useless. I believe the reason she was involved was some kind of x-factor type vote, also there appears to be a belief in the Uk that she's "big in America" as if that were some indication of talent.

We have Sarah Birightman for heaven's sakes. Lesley Garret even. Chaorlotte Jenkins, hell even Charlote Church has better pipes than that reality show pretender. But no, the Great Brittish public voted for Leona Lewis. I despair.

As for Beckham. Sure the man can play Football, but kicking an over large ball into a crowd is hardly visually impressive. Why not all of Zepplin rather than just Jimmy? or Queen with Paul Rogers, or The mother-loving Who. Actually, Motorhead. That would have done it for me. I shall start campaigning now for Motorhead to open 2012. They could ask the WWE nicely to let them use The Game.

At least Placido Domingo wasn't lip syncing.

What will *I* remember?

That the Chinese Government provided "legally forged" documents that allowed it's underage gymnasts to CHEAT. And the government LIED to support the CHEAT. That's how much they wanted to win. And they don't care how it tainted the games.

But then, that is the way in China isn't it? The means justifes the end.

They failed. They didn't fool anyone. They wasted $40 billion dollars. And next week the skies will be black with pollution again.

Jesus... London has a TON of work to do. Are they just completely void of any artistic directors or choreographers? That was the most pathetic hand off I've ever seen in an Olympics. Beijing put on a beautiful and amazing show in Athens, and London rolls out Jimmy Page, Leona Lewis and David Beckham out on the back of a trailer? What were they thinking? Especially with that awkward, "let me kick this ball into the audience," as if that was in any way entertaining.

Time to get your act together London. The Olympic ceremonies deserve theatrics and creativity, not the lame poorly-thought-out display we saw tonight which wouldn't have even been acceptable for a bad Super Bowl half-time show.

Really, what an unbelievable embarrassment.

With the blinkin' brolleys?

It came off like an Olympics spoof cooked up late the night before after drinks. Or maybe it's just that class and culture have found a new home...in Communist China? Have to check my Orwell...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:19 AM on 08/25/2008

Yeah, such "class" and "culture"....

From AP:

China has released 10 foreign activists jailed for protesting during the Olympics after the U.S. Embassy criticized Beijing for failing to use the games to show "greater tolerance and openness."
The news came just hours after the end of the games, which have largely followed the plan of China's leaders for a smooth-running event that would increase the country's international prestige.

Chinese police had sentenced at least 10 foreigners _ including eight Americans, a German and a British citizen _ to 10 days of detention for protesting during the games. The activists were among small groups of demonstrators who have sought to raise China's tough rule in Tibet, its rights record and other issues during the Beijing Games.

Most protesters were quickly dragged away by security forces and, in the first week of the 17-day event, escorted out of China within days. But some activists caught in the past week have been kept in custody under rules that allow officials to hold them without charge for up to 14 days.

I watched about 1/2 hour total of these Olympics (although they were playing on televisions all over town, in bars and restaurants and such). I did follow the general results on sports shows, the internet, and the news. The coverage on NBC bored me and as far as watching the actual competitions, I was disinterested. I couldn't catch any buzz about the beach volleyball and what exactly am I supposed to be care about concerning a swim meet? So whenever I was fliipping channels, I'd watch for 20 seconds, see nothing worth watching, and keep scrolling.

Ratings aside, the Olympics Emperor has no clothes.

Furthermore, deep down, I felt that the patriotism/corporatism combo that is behind these games must be shunned, because it's an influence that can't be trusted.

All the whining about Beijing's Smog didn't prevent the U.S. from winning a ton of medals.
The China Haters have eggs in their faces, the games went off without a hitch.

Jimmy Page, what happened to him that he would play Whole Lotta Love with a Celine Dion sound alike, Leona Lewis singing in some breathy off tempo rendition, and completely ruining that song? I seriously don't think I ever want to hear that song again. Awful!!!

China set the bar Way High re-defining extravaganza and for that alone, I was impressed.

NBC's coverage was truly irritating and far too limited.

The Dragon Heated Hot Tub and and the Sumo Wrestler Jet ads were pretty cool. :-)

It will be interesting to see what journalists bring home with them that was not
broadcast on the MSM or during the events.

Thankfully, this Olympics crap is over. It brings out the worst jingoistic tendencies in Americans of all stripes.

We have all witnessed some pretty ugly comments on this and other websites. What is wrong with you nutjobs? We are an insanely-wealthy, sports-crazed, hype-driven society with the third largest population on Earth. Our athletes are uber-humans jacked up by science, nutrition, and fitness regimens that can only be dreamed of in most places in the world. And yet, most fools in this country were glued to their sets every night memorizing the medal count like it was a biblical pronouncement. Then posting vein-popping, spittle-flying anti-Chinese diatribes all over the web.

I kept posting the most ridiculous sarcastic comments under each cheer-leading article, and apparently only a handful of folks got it. I don't expect much intelligence from 95% of the poorly educated, gun-totin, bible-thumpers that make up this country - but couldn't some of the readers coming to a supposedly progressive website like Huffpo have seen thru the nonsense?

This country is so far to the right politically, it's scary. Half of you probably want to punch me in the nose for pointing out the idiocy of the Olympics, and the rest are too scared to say the same. Too bad - the emporer has no clothes. Honestly, if it were easy to switch your citizenship, I'd move to Canada. I hear they've got a better health-care system anyway.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:33 PM on 08/24/2008

I bet you've never talked to a Canadian about (a-boot) hockey. Jingoism is an over-used word and you really need to relax. There's nothing wrong with taking a little pride in your country. And yes, our athletes receive some of the best training in the world, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they are very real human beings who have worked hard, sacrificed more than you can imagine, and are genuinely proud to have reached the level they are at. Sure, people can get a little carried away over the olympics, but as far as I know no one has ever gone to war over them. Which is more than can be said for cricket.

Being jaded is your perogative, but I would think twice before you took pride in it.
