The Associated Press reports:

CLIFTON, N.J. -- Police arrested two men dressed like ninjas and armed with Asian martial arts weapons who said they were delivering warning letters to drug dealers and users.

Calling themselves "Shinobi warriors," the men carried knives, throwing stars, swords, nunchucks and a bow and arrows.

Tadeusz Tertkiewicz, 20, and Jesse Trojaniak, 19, were each charged with weapons possession. Tertkiewicz is also charged with harassment for a letter left for an ex-girlfriend.

The letters warned drug users and drug dealers that the "Shinobi will stop your cruel and sadistic intentions with justified yet, merciful force."

In the letter, the two men accused drug dealers and users of having "committed sin of passing impurity" to others and that the "wind guides us to those of impure heart and intent."

"Their intentions may have been good, but we tell everyone that they shouldn't take the law into their own hands because it will cause more problems for everyone in the long run," Detective Capt. Robert Rowan said.

You're just saying what everyone was thinking....

It would have been even funnier if they had actually gotten beaten up by the dealers, I doubt they even knew how to use those throwing stars.

Sorry to see that the Shinobi are just as stupid as the rest of the Drug Prohibition Warriors - 38 years of abject failure, and still think somehow that "punishing" drug dealers will stop there from being more...

Nature abhors a vacuum, folks. As long as there is a demand for drugs, there will be someone who provides them.

On a more ironic note, vigilantes were breaking the law, to punish people who were breaking the law. In one case (the drug dealers), the argument is that society on the whole is the victim, in the other case (the vigilantes), specific people (the drug dealers) and society on the whole are the victims. One side of this equation has two sets of victims.

Maybe they should have evened things out by going after, say, a rapist or murderer, both whom would have two sets of victims as well.

I can understand their motivation though - dealing with the police can be a frustrating exercise.

Vigilante justice isn’t the American way.

This is, in essence, one group of people taking it upon themselves to hold court, judge and set their own sentence on people they’ve decided are breaking the law.

On first glance, this sounds like it should be cut and dry.

However, vigilante justice can accidentally target innocent people and/or people who simply don’t agree with their brand of justice.

Not to mention, in the event these ninjas end up getting THEIR butts kicked, the police will have to come to their defense.

Granted, drugs and gang related activities are a growing problem. As citizens we need to assist the police, but not circumvent the police.

You're wrong. America was weened on vigilantism, it's part of our history. That and racism.

While there is plenty of vigilantism in American history, much of it centered around race, The idea of the rule of law had at least as much influence on American society. An example would be the civil rights movement, which effectively ended vigilantism in the Jim Crow era.

" Vigilante justice isn"t the American way. This is, in essence, one group of people taking it upon themselves to hold court, judge and set their own sentence on people they"ve decided are breaking the law."

Hmmm, I wonder if watching the U.S invade a sovereign country against the will of other nations (Iraq), then depose their ruler (Saddam Hussein) and kill his family, then facilitate a mock trial where the ruler is found guilty and sentenced to death-by-hanging for his "crimes" (broadcast on US media outlets) and finally occupy the country for several years had any influence on these kids and their decision to feel justified to take the law into their own hands?

"However, vigilante justice can accidentally target innocent people and/or people who simply don"t agree with their brand of justice."

Right! Like when the U.S. was attacked by Bin Laden but we "accidentally targeted innocent" Iraqis? Teach these kids a lesson and send them to GITMO! Then let's attack the store where they bought their ninja supplies. Afterwards, we can attack the school yard where they trained and practiced their deadly moves on the premise of harboring ninjas!

"Not to mention, in the event these ninjas end up getting THEIR butts kicked, the police will have to come to their defense."

Ah yes, sort of the way the "financial police" may need to help fannie and freddie ninja from getting their butts kicked on bad loans.

They really do NOT sound like they warranted police time and/or attention. How many unsolved CRIMES might they have been investigating OR how many serious crimes--like those of escaped, felonious, ILLEGAL ALIENS--might they have pursued???

Make an insulting gesture to a U.S. gendarme, and you'll call down, at least, ELEVEN supporting cars of angry cops!

I'm sure you wouldn't mind a bunch of masked idiots carrying weapons threatening suspected drug USERS with violence hanging around your house.
Maybe if you're 16 year old son is stabbed and killed for using drugs your 13 year old daughter will think twice before she smokes pot huh?
