Cindy McCain Going To Georgia

It's not every aspiring First Lady whose comfort zone is a war zone, but such is the case for Cindy McCain, who left Monday on a mission to Georgia to assess the civilian casualties caused by the Russian invasion.

McCain is traveling with the U.N.'s World Food Program, whose work she monitored in Southeast Asia and Africa this spring and summer. McCain planned to meet with Georgian President Mikheil Sakaasvili, and to visit with wounded Georgian soldiers. She would also visit representatives of the HALO Trust, which works to remove landmines and on whose board she serves.

Cindy and John McCain visited Georgia together last year; in an interview with TIME at her Sedona ranch before she left, she emphasized that her years of work on overseas missions was "an important part of what I'm about, what makes me tick."

Cindy McCain has does humanitarian work which is commendable With that said, to my knowledge no other presumptive first lady has gone to a war zone one week before her speech at the Republican National Convention. This smells of padding her thin resume so she can incorporate this little trip into her national speech. Even if her intentions are golden, it nonetheless gives the appearance of scheming and insincerity. Be assured Georgia will be predominantly mentioned in her speech.

Cindy McCain does do a lot of humanitarian work, so more power to her.

The bigger question to me is why they seem to have such a h*ard*n for Georgia. Nato is overestimating the importance of Georgia and the Ukraine joining their ranks and all I see is yet another geopolitical quagmire for America to get dragged into that is of questionable long term national interest. And McCain seems determined to drag us into it. Whatever happened to that conservative principle of avoiding foreign entanglements?

Somehow the Republicans will twist this event in a way to criticize Obama. Probably insist that, since Michelle has not planned a trip, then the candidate's wife doesn't care about the suffering in Georgia.
