***UPDATE***Ted Kennedy is delivering a speech at the Convention right now. Caroline Kennedy took to the podium tonight to praise Obama and her uncle Ted Kennedy. Her speech introduced a video tribute to Senator Ted Kennedy.

Democrats opened their national convention on Monday, seeking peace in the family as they pursue victory in the fall for Barack Obama and his historic quest for the White House.

An appearance by the ailing, aging Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and a primetime speech by Obama's wife, Michelle, headlined the convention's first night.

Read more about tonight here.
Check back tonight for commentary and video from the speeches. Read more about how Michelle prepared her speech from HuffPost's Seth Colter Walls.

Excerpts from Michelle Obama's speech are below:

"But each of us also comes here tonight by way of our own improbable journey. I come here tonight as a sister, blessed with a brother who is my mentor, my protector and my lifelong friend. I come here as a wife who loves my husband and believes he will be an extraordinary president. I come here as a Mom whose girls are the heart of my heart and the center of my world - they're the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night. Their future - and all our children's future - is my stake in this election.
And I come here as a daughter - raised on the South Side of Chicago by a father who was a blue collar city worker, and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and me. My mother's love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion, and her intelligence reflected in my own daughters."

***

"And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them.
And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children - and all children in this nation - to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

***

"And in the end, after all that's happened these past 19 months, the Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago. He's the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital ten years ago this summer, inching along at a snail's pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands, determined to give her everything he'd struggled so hard for himself, determined to give her what he never had: the affirming embrace of a father's love."

I know that Obama folks want Hillary to get lost as SHE LOST THE NOMINATION. But, they cheer
Ted Kennedy who lost the nomination IN 1980. That's what I like about Obama folks, they want it both ways every time.

Tonight, Michelle exceeded everything required to settle the uneasiness anyone could possibly still harbor against her and Barack.

I never understood the acceptance by some of the myth that Barack and Michelle Obama are elitist. If money is the measuring stick for elitism, well, what they have earned through hard honest work has come just recently. If elitism is a measure of how much you want to improve your station in life and to want to uplift the people around you, then who can cast the first stone?

The success that the Obamas share is far different than the McCains. One family, pulled themselves up by the bootstraps in the shadows of a working-class existence, to go on and excel academically and to come back to pull others out of abject poverty and despair. And the other family, inheriting untold wealth and living a life that very few of us can neither relate to nor imagine. It must be blissful to have so many homes that you can not remember how many you have, especially when you are just trying to make the mortgage each month.

Yes, the Republican “mean machine” can fool some of the people some of the time, but, tonight, Michelle set the record straight.

People, I have to admit, earlier I was just freaking out because those talking heads
are only serving up one side-freak-show to give their viewers.
There are such important issues here and things that have to be done.
This is All about real issues and the people of America, and then there's
Chris and Larry etc with every second word being Hill or Hill related. It's so maddening.
Don't they care.
But listening to Michelle...that's what should be covered wall to wall.
That was American...

I understand, and Ann Curry backstage was like a f*cking train wreck, trying to get President Carter to talk about the Clintons. It bordered on harassment and was so inappropriate and unprofessional. Then she kind of brushed him off, because he kept talking about unity.
12:09 AM on 08/26/2008
Just you telling me this..GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I just wanna ring their necks!!! I'm going to explode!
07:09 AM on 08/26/2008
Yes, Ann went for the created drama... didn't care about the important issues as much as what could rile up the people... idoiot! We don't need reporters to do that too. Hill and Obama have already resolved the issue.... Hill is stuck doing way too much just to convince her folks that Obama is better'n McCain... and still, the media is looking for a fight.

Barack probably deserves to be president because he had the wisdom to choose a wise, caompassionate, intelligent, and articulate woman to be his wife and the mother of his children.

Wow, Chris Matthews is actually impressing me greatly. Buchannon mentions "there was no mention of Christianity in Michelle's speech"..

Matthews comes back with " you know Pat, this isn't the Christian Democrats having their convention here, okay? Rick Warren isn't here tonight. We don't have any religious tests thanks to Thomas Jefferson and our Constitution."

AWESOME.
11:57 PM on 08/25/2008
We need to thank Chris for pissing on all Christians, coast to coast.

Oh well, I guess they will have the Clintons bring the heat and message.

Wasted night.

At least Ted showed up and talked about health care.

Keep fighting Ted.

Just when I thought I could not become more jaded, this happens.

Is this what it feels like? To actually believe in something larger than yourself represented by someone that warrants your suspension of disbelief (even for one moment)?

How many are there our there, just like me, that feel like this is the first time in their lives (or the first time past 4 years of age, in my case)?

The Obamas, so unlike me (in all ways external), yet so like me (in all ways that actually mean something)?

Is this what it is supposed to feel like, to be American? To actually believe in a country that might somehow impossibly unite around a phenomenal young man and his beautiful young family?

They themselves as yet unjaded and scarred beyond recognition (as my own self)?

I heard something. Then I saw something. It all seemed to be real.

It's perfectly okay to feel euphoric and optimistic. And yes, I agree that this is the first time (in my 30 years) that I've felt the breath of hope realized in politics. This time around, idealism just my be rewarded with the great riches it so deserves.

Compare it to the C.lintons or the Mc,Cains.

Let's be civil. The Obamas certainly give off the feeling of love genuinely, but we can't see into the lives and feelings of the Clintons or the McCains. We've got plenty of reasons NOT to vote for McCain, so let's leave family out of it, agreed?

When Obama first appeared on the big screen, he said he was in St. Louis. Then, later his daughter asked where he was and he said Kansas City. I thought I heard that but wasn't sure till a reporter pointed it out. Well, one candidate doesn't know how many houses he has and the other doesn't know where he is. Some choice.

She's been badly defamed by the RNC. It's time for the American people to see the truth.
