***UPDATE: SEE BELOW FOR NEW SPEECH EXCERPTS***

When Michelle Obama takes to the podium this evening at the Pepsi Center in Denver, she'll be delivering a speech that she spent nearly a month constructing with her staff. According to a campaign source, Michelle was "integrally" involved not only in choosing the anecdotes from her own history with the presumptive Democratic nominee, but was deeply engaged at the line-edit level.

"The speech really is her creation," the source told the Huffington Post, adding that Michelle started working on a first draft before the family's Hawaii trip, because "she's not a politician, she's a a mom." Of course, it's not surprising that a campaign source would seek to give Michelle Obama the lion's share of credit for words she's set to deliver. But in this instance, the source repeatedly hit that note -- and said that even after the circle working on the speech widened, staff members quickly came to learn that Michelle "really is a good writer."

In a preview of the speech emailed out to reporters Monday afternoon, the Obama campaign said Michelle will talk about "building a family grounded in faith and values," as well as her upbringing on the South Side of Chicago.

"Her story is a great American story: modest means but big dreams -- and encouragement from loving parents that she and her brother could accomplish whatever they put their minds to if they worked hard," the memo read. "Like Barack, Michelle was also taught to give back to the community and the country that has given her so much. Now, as a working mother of two young girls, Michelle is continuing to give back to the community and country she loves. Like many moms, she's learned to juggle the responsibilities of work and family."

Did Barack Obama have any input on the remarks? The campaign source declined any knowledge of the Senator's involvement, though she's "sure he's seen it, since they're such good partners." But in the end, the source said, "it was her decision."

Excerpts from Michelle Obama's speech are below:

"But each of us also comes here tonight by way of our own improbable journey. I come here tonight as a sister, blessed with a brother who is my mentor, my protector and my lifelong friend. I come here as a wife who loves my husband and believes he will be an extraordinary president. I come here as a Mom whose girls are the heart of my heart and the center of my world - they're the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night. Their future - and all our children's future - is my stake in this election. And I come here as a daughter - raised on the South Side of Chicago by a father who was a blue collar city worker, and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and me. My mother's love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion, and her intelligence reflected in my own daughters."

***

"And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them.
And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children - and all children in this nation - to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

***

"And in the end, after all that's happened these past 19 months, the Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago. He's the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital ten years ago this summer, inching along at a snail's pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands, determined to give her everything he'd struggled so hard for himself, determined to give her what he never had: the affirming embrace of a father's love."

I have just discovered the crux of the republicans heart..THEY HAVE NO HEART! no soul, no warmth.
They were over on Larry King just dissing and being super obnoxious. Sad that the american people allowed these uncivulised wimp men to take over.
Now's the time people!

On another note she was brilliant and totally nailed it!

Michelle spoke from her heart and it was awe inspiring. I am so proud to have worked so hard for the Obama's to be our first couple. Please God, help Barack to win this election. Our country so needs his help and Michelle's too. She has always only wanted to use the position of First Lady as a springboard to help women and children and there's so much good she could do. I'm so grateful that I've had a chance to know them over these many months of reading and listening and learning.

I cried.

She was great. Tehre's jsut something about self-sacrifice that gets me every time. Her father working and being their provider. Taking an extra hour every morning just to get dressed. The military families with an empty chair about their dinner table.

Yes, i cried.

Heck, even my husband teared up when she talked about her father...I cried because it was such a great speech but I think it was pent up emotion. Michelle has gotten a raw deal for months and I was so happy for and proud of her for proving the LoveHaters wrong. Why can't the repugs see the Obamas ARE the American Dream and their life could only happen in America?

Great speech tonight. Well done . Said a lot about her and she definitely looked the part. She will make a great First Lady.

I caught Rove on Faux News dissing the speech already, what a loser.

As someone who grew up in the same place, at almost the same time, under similar circumstances, I can say that I am so proud of Michelle Obama tonight. I knew she would do well, but she exceeded my expectations. She is going to be the best first lady, and it will be so nice to have kids in the White House again.

Unfortunately while listening to Michelle all I could think of were the mean spirited people in this country who have nothing but ill-will towards her and fawn all over cindy McCain.
In a poll on AOL today Cindy McCain is favored 65% to 25%.

In every AOL poll similar numbers get posted in regard to McCain and Obama. Does this reflect the vitriol in the American mindset?

Now it is possible that the powers that be at AOL, who also own CNN and brought us Glenn Beck, are falsifying poll figures like that - black ops in the media is not an impossibility.

I find it hard to believe that McCain could inspire such lopsided support in ANY demographic except maybe the KKK. As conservative as AOL subscribers are, in previous years their slant has been no more than 15-%20.

Michelle was wonderful tonight. Of course I never believed any of the negative sping the Neos were saying about her. Yet, tonight I really felt like I got to know her better and she really does seem like a down to earth, intelligent lady who loves her family, and has the same concerns as the average person.

Big thumbs up to Michelle

...and DaRight is a combo of "Duh" and "[Republican] Right"--lazy, creatively-bankrupt spouting of talking points in which Republicans take in vain the names of major figures of their supposedly ardent faith (Moses, Jesus) in order to shore up their (too) longstanding stranglehold on the state of our great nation.
Can't we raise the level of the discussion a little? Instead of mechanically regurgitating meaningless insults, convince me. I've voted for a Republican before. You probably can't say that you've voted for a Democrat.

That is so true. I'm black. I have been a registered Republican and a registered Democrat. I voted for Reagan, and Bush Sr. the first time. I voted for Clinton, Gore and Kerry. Can many republicans say the same thing? People that call Obama the messiah, or some other stupid comment, are really simple minded. What I have truly learned about the two parties is that the Dem. party is the party of thinkers and intellectuals, and the Rep. party is the party of greed and mental migets. All you have to do is look at your current president, your republican nominee, and faux news.

Cindy McCain in Georgia, tending to the sick and maimed. I hope she's not looking for an escapism from her svengali. One of the reasons for her self-medication that was quoted in The Phoenix New Times was, in essence, her marriage and the stress of being married to PaCain, his first attempt at electoral office, etc. You can Google " Phoenix New Times, Opiates for the Mrs, Sept 1994. It is interesting. You can also Google, Phoenix New Times, Pampered Politician, May 1997 and also An Endowed Chair, Nov 1999. Enjoy.

shows how much you know, wuzzup. Cindy will also be at the RNC rooting for her husband. It is pretty much convention SOP/101 - the spouse always shows the first night.

Not to mention, Cindy M would rather , if she could, be in a SPA IN the state of GEORGIA but is stuck to go be with the dirty poor people. At least she will still travel in style as she is used to in AZ - private jet so she needn't catch anyone's eyes. ooo oooo - there is an upside though for her! Maybe she can hang out with Mother Teresa again! Oh wait, she never did to begin with - too bad she is dead - I am sure they would fly her up for the photo op. That is DEFINITELY the moral high ground - fictitiously assert a meeting with one of the most adored humanitarians in the 20th Century. Pure class, baby, that home wrecker has pure class.
