DENVER — Hillary Rodham Clinton summoned the millions of voters who supported her in the primaries to send Barack Obama to the White House Tuesday night, and drew thunderous applause at the Democratic National Convention when she declared her one-time rival is "my candidate and he must be our president."

"We don't have a moment to lose or a vote to spare," said the former first lady, writing the final chapter in a quest for the White House every bit as pioneering as Obama's own.

The packed convention floor became a sea of white "Hillary" signs as the New York senator _ Obama's fiercest rival across 56 primaries and caucuses _ strode to the podium for her prime-time speech. The signs were soon replaced others that read simply, "Unity."

While her remarks included a full-throated endorsement of Obama, Clinton did not say whether she would have her name placed in nomination or seek a formal roll call of the states when the party's top prize is awarded by delegates on Wednesday night.

Clinton had been the prohibitive favorite for the nomination she launched her campaign last year, seeking to become the first female president. But she fell behind Obama after the leadoff Iowa caucuses in January, and he now is poised to become the first black nominee of a major party.

Obama turned the featured speaking slot of the convention's second night over to Clinton, hoping she could nudge her disenchanted supporters toward his candidacy.

He called her after her speech to express his appreciation, aides said.

She followed others to the podium who ripped into Republican McCain as indifferent to the working class and cozy with big oil.

'If he's the answer, then the question must be ridiculous," New York Gov. David Paterson said of the GOP presidential candidate.

Said Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, "It's time to bring our jobs back and bring our troops home."

"Call the roll!" urged Ted Sorensen, a party elder eager to propel Obama toward the White House.

Not yet.

Obama's formal nomination was set for Wednesday night. First came Clinton,

The convention hall was packed for her appearance, so much so that officials sealed the entrances.

Calling herself a "proud supporter of Obama, Clinton dismissed Republican John McCain with a few choice words.

"No way. No how. No McCain," she said as the hall erupted in cheers.

"We don't need four more years ... of the last eight years," she added.

Like other failed candidates at conventions past, Clinton recalled her own quest for the White House.

"You taught me so much, you made me laugh and ... you even made me cry," she said to supporters in the Pepsi Center and millions more watching on nationwide television.

"You allowed me to become part of your lives, and you became part of mine."

"I want you to ask yourselves, 'Were you in this campaign just for me?'" she asked.

Despite lingering unhappiness among some delegates nursing grievances over Clinton's loss, party chairman Howard Dean declared the convention determined to make Obama the nation's 44th president. "There is not a unity problem. If anyone doubts that, wait till you see Hillary Clinton's speech," he said.

In the convention keynote address, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner said Obama will "appeal to us not as Republicans or Democrats, but first and foremost as Americans." He added, "We need leaders who see our common ground as sacred ground."

In contrast to many of speeches delivered earlier in the day, out of prime time, Warner's remarks were more a sketch of the "post-partisan" possibilities that Obama often speaks of, rather than criticism of McCain and President Bush.

"I know we're at the Democratic National Convention, but if an idea works, it really doesn't matter if it has an 'R' or 'D' next to it," he said.

As keynoter, Warner's task was the same one that Obama _ then an Illinois state lawmaker running for the U.S. Senate _ used four years ago to launch his astonishing ascent in national politics.

Obama, 47 and in his first Senate term, campaigned in Missouri as he slowly made his way toward the convention city. Speaking to airline workers in a giant hangar, he accused the Bush administration of failing to enforce health and safety laws and said McCain "doesn't get it" when it comes to the concerns of blue collar workers.

There was more of the same _ much more _ as a parade of speakers criticized McCain at the convention several hundred miles away.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said the Republican has voted against "real sex education, voted against affordable family planning. And if elected, John McCain has vowed to appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade," she said, referring to the landmark 1973 case that affirmed women's right to abortion.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland focused on economic issues. "While families are losing sleep tonight trying to figure out some way to make their paycheck stretch through one more day, John McCain is sleeping better than ever," he said, recalling that McCain had recently said Americans were better off because of President Bush's policies.

And Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said oil companies were "placing their bets on John McCain, bankrolling his campaign and gambling with our future."

"John McCain offers four more years of the same Bush-Cheney policies that have failed us," summed up Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Sorensen was a link to some of the party's glory years, John F. Kennedy's closest aide. As was the case with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's emotional appearance on the convention's opening night Monday, Sorensen's presence on the podium was designed to strengthen the image of Obama as Kennedy's worthy heir.

Obama delivers his acceptance speech Thursday night at a football stadium. An estimated 75,000 tickets have been distributed for the event, meant to stir additional comparisons with Kennedy's appearance at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960.

The Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., next week to nominate McCain and his still-unnamed running mate. That will set the stage for a final sprint to Election Day in a race that is remarkably close.

Dean, the party chairman, said the Democrats' imperatives were "to make sure people know who Barack Obama is, who Joe Biden is."

Biden, a Delaware senator, is Obama's vice presidential pick, already making the rounds of the convention city.

Whatever tone the Democrats took, there was no mistaking McCain's intentions.

For the second time in three days, his campaign sought to use Clinton to wound Obama. This time it was a television commercial that made use of a memorable ad she ran in the primaries.

It shows sleeping children and a 3 a.m. phone call into the White House portending a crisis. In the new ad Clinton is shown saying: "I know Sen. McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And, Sen. Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."

A narrator adds: "Hillary's right. John McCain for president."

Here's another attempt at saying it again (I don't know why Huffpost would censor this.)
A friend of mine pointed out that she saw a sign saying "obama-biden" and thought it said
"osama bin laden." 4 letters difference. I think we're losing the nonspelling public here. Just a stupid coincidence, though possibly one with psychological power. If you think Repos won't notice this, you're probably drunk right now. This is just an innoculation against taking this stuff seriously. By the way, I'm not a troll, would never vote for McW.

Wow, censorship from a liberal! I'll bet you guys will be screaming bloody murder over this!

Speeches are weeded in all conventions, Democratic and Republican alike. It might not be ideal, but it is reality. It's called "staying on message" -- something the Republicans are very, very good at.

And your health care is already "managed" by the profits-driven insurance industry.

I know most everyone here has their heart is in the right place, but I see many people admonishing those who aren't "marching in lock-step" with the party line. This is the antithesis to what makes being a liberal so great: We believe in the freedom to speak our minds.

Yes, we should unite -- and we WILL. Scratch that -- we are in the process of uniting right here, right now as we all type and mentally work this all out. But those who are attempting to suppress opinions only works to create more antipathy within our party and turns off voters who are still undecided. Let's not be intellectually lazy or spiteful. Let us express our views in a reasoned manner and work to persuade, not subdue, those we feel are misguided.

Let us use this wonderful technology to coalesce and come together for the purpose of electing someone who will PROGRESS us into a new technological revolution to help us compete in this global marketplace.

Why all the negativity toward any poster who thinks Hill's speech fell short? It doesn't mean we're Repubs, or trolls, or ; it is what it is and something that O has to deal with to win in November. Choosing to ignore it doesn't change it...

Here is part of my post from earlier today:
Hill gave a great CYA (as in cover her *ss) speech last night. She said just enough to make herself viable in 2012 should O lose (and let's face it, we know that's her preferred outcome). As an O supporter, if her theatrics yesterday in the name of so-called "unity" bring more people on board to vote for O then, of course, that's great. But, let's call a spade a spade. Hill did what she needed to do for herself; any benefit to O was just a by-product. If you listen closely, any support Hill pretends to offer is just an afterthought, not the central theme of her words, which is what it should be. As a result, a lot of her supporters still will not be swayed because she is not saying anything about O, the person, and why he should be elected President. For some, voting with the Party will not be enough of a reason to vote for O because they need to be comfortable with O, the candidate, and this is where Hill purposefully falls short.

I get it. You don't like Hillary, stopping just short of saying she's helping McCain. It sounds like the same logic that said Nader stole votes.

The "negativity" is generated by your own post. It's insulting.

Ultimately, it's Obama's job to make people comfortable with him not Hillary's.

I read it. But the only way they can succeed with the 2012 plan is if O loses this election; if he wins, she can hardly run against another democrat in 2012, she'd have to switch parties. The truth is, we don't know for sure what H and B have planned.

There were a number of subversive things that jumped out at me in her speech. The pundits haven't mentioned them - and it's just as well, for the divisiveness has to end. But they were there, and signal that we are not done with the Clintons and their meddling.

And I'm going to say this now that its over.
One of the reasons why Hill was considered too polarizing was those networks

We are all Dem's and we are all passionate about who we thought would run the country... and we all know it has to be a Democrat--- we need to get off each others back. stop the snark and attacking of the candidate and HRC and move on or we will lose.
the future of the nation is hanging in the balance... pettiness must stop.

Agreed, and we need to not tolerate any trashing of any of them by the MSM it should be a personal affront to us all. No matter how you may feel about the past. Moving forward is all that matters and the MSM needs to improve They have spent months pouring salt in this wound and we need to put an end to it period.

Absolutely.
What some of us were so hurt/upset about I think is that so many "progressive" joined in the MSM trashing of another Dem, who didn't understand that a primary is about them and the supporters support, not trash others because we do need to move on, we do need to achieve solidarity.

So not only should we not tolerate any more trashing of them by the MSM we should not tolerate any trashing of them or the Obama's or Bide by any trolls, PUMA, Republicans or O supporters.
Anyone who want to continue the ugliness and divisiveness should move on, go to Drudge, go play aqmongst themselves so we can move on.
We don't need anymore division, we don't need to spend any more time and energy attacking or defending.

Just like those who were O supporters felt they must defend O from attacks by others so too did C supporters feel the need to defend against the venom... that takes a lot of energy and we need that energy now to ensure a Democratic win in November.

Me?
I'm flagging them, refreshing and flagging again.

They are probably doing the same to me!
LOL

16 years!

I maintain that the person isn't polarizing its the calling her polarizing that creates the meme.
The neocons started it with their smear campaign against her back in the 90's... You know how they work. Repeat something over and over again till its truthy.
After all she has many, many friends that don't think she is polarizing, she has lifelong friends and aquaintences who love her and describe her in terms that do not include polariaing. She works in the Senate and all those repubs and neocons who signed onto the truthy narrative the neocons put out about her were all pretty surprised and wound up praising her co-operative working style, her determination, hard working work ethic, and warmth and humor... and those are the ones who don't like her.
They don't call her polarizing.

Those who call her polarizing and divisive are those who are looking for someone to pin that meme on to deflect any notice of their own polarizing and divisive activities.

Its like saying someone is unlikable.

ummm, no... someone isn't inherently unlikable. I may not like them but that is on me, not them.

People take no responsibility for their own part in anything.

BTW.
Flag the trolls, I don't care if they are Puimas, Republicans or O supporters... if they are hating and being divisive they are trolls. we need to get them out of here./
Enough.

Bill needs to help quell the experience issue. Bill did not have much experience when he ran. He was a great president. I am praying that Bill knocks it out the park and reminds people of how much is at stake.

Hillary exaggerating her experience is not helpful. Her experience math is kind of like her votes math.

Bill Clinton was a governor and as such ran a state, albeit a small state, so he had experience 'running things', it is his wife who has had little experience, far less than Obama.

DON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN
-The Who

I hope THIS is the campaign message that leaves Denver and echoes from sea to shining sea.

Let's hope the DNC blasts that song loud and clear on Thursday night !
Hopefully, this will be my contribution to this campaign

(If you like this theme, pass the ammo! )

Perhaps the ladies from PUMA can ask Ralph Nader to be their candidate. It looks to me like a perfect match of ego and insanity.

Party Unity My A**. I don't think the HP censor will let me print out the "word." Anyway, it's not a shoe.

I heard Ralph Nader is male.

Maybe they could get Paris Hilton.

That would be a trip!

A political party developed under the assumption that Party Unity can never be achieved! Howard wolfson would be his vp.! Sounds like a winner to me!

PUMA (Party Unity My A#$) should be changed to COUGAR (Centered On Un-Ambiguous Gop Attack Rants).

Seriously though - would these PUMAs really rather John McCain!

PUMF!!! Party Unity My Friends!!! It's the only way to win.
