DENVER — Hillary Rodham Clinton summoned the millions of voters who supported her in the primaries to send Barack Obama to the White House Tuesday night, and drew thunderous applause at the Democratic National Convention when she declared her one-time rival is "my candidate and he must be our president."

"We don't have a moment to lose or a vote to spare," said the former first lady, writing the final chapter in a quest for the White House every bit as pioneering as Obama's own.

The packed convention floor became a sea of white "Hillary" signs as the New York senator _ Obama's fiercest rival across 56 primaries and caucuses _ strode to the podium for her prime-time speech. The signs were soon replaced others that read simply, "Unity."

While her remarks included a full-throated endorsement of Obama, Clinton did not say whether she would have her name placed in nomination or seek a formal roll call of the states when the party's top prize is awarded by delegates on Wednesday night.

Clinton had been the prohibitive favorite for the nomination she launched her campaign last year, seeking to become the first female president. But she fell behind Obama after the leadoff Iowa caucuses in January, and he now is poised to become the first black nominee of a major party.

Obama turned the featured speaking slot of the convention's second night over to Clinton, hoping she could nudge her disenchanted supporters toward his candidacy.

He called her after her speech to express his appreciation, aides said.

She followed others to the podium who ripped into Republican McCain as indifferent to the working class and cozy with big oil.

Story continues below

'If he's the answer, then the question must be ridiculous," New York Gov. David Paterson said of the GOP presidential candidate.

Said Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, "It's time to bring our jobs back and bring our troops home."

"Call the roll!" urged Ted Sorensen, a party elder eager to propel Obama toward the White House.

Not yet.

Obama's formal nomination was set for Wednesday night. First came Clinton,

The convention hall was packed for her appearance, so much so that officials sealed the entrances.

Calling herself a "proud supporter of Obama, Clinton dismissed Republican John McCain with a few choice words.

"No way. No how. No McCain," she said as the hall erupted in cheers.

"We don't need four more years ... of the last eight years," she added.

Like other failed candidates at conventions past, Clinton recalled her own quest for the White House.

"You taught me so much, you made me laugh and ... you even made me cry," she said to supporters in the Pepsi Center and millions more watching on nationwide television.

"You allowed me to become part of your lives, and you became part of mine."

"I want you to ask yourselves, 'Were you in this campaign just for me?'" she asked.

Despite lingering unhappiness among some delegates nursing grievances over Clinton's loss, party chairman Howard Dean declared the convention determined to make Obama the nation's 44th president. "There is not a unity problem. If anyone doubts that, wait till you see Hillary Clinton's speech," he said.

In the convention keynote address, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner said Obama will "appeal to us not as Republicans or Democrats, but first and foremost as Americans." He added, "We need leaders who see our common ground as sacred ground."

In contrast to many of speeches delivered earlier in the day, out of prime time, Warner's remarks were more a sketch of the "post-partisan" possibilities that Obama often speaks of, rather than criticism of McCain and President Bush.

"I know we're at the Democratic National Convention, but if an idea works, it really doesn't matter if it has an 'R' or 'D' next to it," he said.

As keynoter, Warner's task was the same one that Obama _ then an Illinois state lawmaker running for the U.S. Senate _ used four years ago to launch his astonishing ascent in national politics.

Obama, 47 and in his first Senate term, campaigned in Missouri as he slowly made his way toward the convention city. Speaking to airline workers in a giant hangar, he accused the Bush administration of failing to enforce health and safety laws and said McCain "doesn't get it" when it comes to the concerns of blue collar workers.

There was more of the same _ much more _ as a parade of speakers criticized McCain at the convention several hundred miles away.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said the Republican has voted against "real sex education, voted against affordable family planning. And if elected, John McCain has vowed to appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade," she said, referring to the landmark 1973 case that affirmed women's right to abortion.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland focused on economic issues. "While families are losing sleep tonight trying to figure out some way to make their paycheck stretch through one more day, John McCain is sleeping better than ever," he said, recalling that McCain had recently said Americans were better off because of President Bush's policies.

And Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said oil companies were "placing their bets on John McCain, bankrolling his campaign and gambling with our future."

"John McCain offers four more years of the same Bush-Cheney policies that have failed us," summed up Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Sorensen was a link to some of the party's glory years, John F. Kennedy's closest aide. As was the case with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's emotional appearance on the convention's opening night Monday, Sorensen's presence on the podium was designed to strengthen the image of Obama as Kennedy's worthy heir.

Obama delivers his acceptance speech Thursday night at a football stadium. An estimated 75,000 tickets have been distributed for the event, meant to stir additional comparisons with Kennedy's appearance at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960.

The Republican National Convention meets in St. Paul, Minn., next week to nominate McCain and his still-unnamed running mate. That will set the stage for a final sprint to Election Day in a race that is remarkably close.

Dean, the party chairman, said the Democrats' imperatives were "to make sure people know who Barack Obama is, who Joe Biden is."

Biden, a Delaware senator, is Obama's vice presidential pick, already making the rounds of the convention city.

Whatever tone the Democrats took, there was no mistaking McCain's intentions.

For the second time in three days, his campaign sought to use Clinton to wound Obama. This time it was a television commercial that made use of a memorable ad she ran in the primaries.

It shows sleeping children and a 3 a.m. phone call into the White House portending a crisis. In the new ad Clinton is shown saying: "I know Sen. McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And, Sen. Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."

A narrator adds: "Hillary's right. John McCain for president."

Excellent speech.Hillary demonstrated again that she loves this country and put the future of the country before her personal ambition. She has not just redeemed herslf but has laid the foundation to be a great leader to follow the “Lion” Ted Kennedy. She was totally behind the party ,unambiguous in her support for Obama. The Republicans are still going to pick holes which is what they do best, but sorry folks, the democrats are the winners. If there is still some Hillary supporters who do not fall in line to support Obama, they are beyond doubt republicans who just supported Hillary to prolong the primaries and their support was in never in contention.Just look at the nurse who proclaimed her support to McCain not even aware he is all for overturning RoeVs Wade! She is a total sham. Her support is not on principles and one is at aloss to know what her support is based on!People like her are too shallow and would never vote for a woman or a black in any general election.THey are more concerned about ideology than the future of the country. The country does not need them who fortunately are a small minority in this great couuntry

Schweitzer was GREAT!
Did you see Bill laughing and getting a big kick out of it?
he loved it.
so did I and everyone else.

They are talking far too much.
I watched the reruns on CNN last night and got to see some other speeches.
CNN has them streaming live if you don't want to hear the talking heads.

Also the DNC has a streaming website.
I don't know why I can't get it.
It gives the info saying I can't get it I need this that and the otherthing... all of which I have!
oh well.
Still, you can go there and see more speeches.
I haven't seen Kuciniches yet but I heard he was something else.
I LOVE him.

talk about having a set... yikes.
I thought Warnert was pretty flat too. Rachel maddow was almost apoplectic describing him.
LOL

The talking heads today are really Pissing me off.
They are so obnoxious... they act like they have nothing to do with the coverage.

"Will Biden have a big night or will Bill Clinton be the story?"

HELLLLOOOOO?
Who is making those choices?

Cognitive dissonance.
banging my head against the wall.

You know what is worse?
This happens every 4 years, all of it, the back biting behind the scenes, the hurt feelings etc.

Never has it been covered like this, so intensely and insanely and trying to make it as if this is something different and all the C's fault.

The media touted as a campaign speech for himself, but what they failed to note was that, in a way, it should have been - if he can help deliver Virginia, he'll convert it to a blue state, with big impact for the general election.

I saw it slighlty differently. There were at least three subtle digs at Brack. I laughed at her unnecessary ref to 50 states (Barack 57); Iran/dangerous; and her "joint/We" successes during the WJC Terms. It was not about events eight years ago was it? Again she demonstrated gravitas and knowledge and again Barack with zero-gravity in comparison to her.

I can't believe that her speech was not satisfactory to you. On the other hand, I think you must be one of those persons that will never be satisfied. If you weren't happy with last night, then I guess you won't be satisfied with tonight either. Could it be that the reason you weren't happy with her comparisons is because there is no comparison?

sorry, no more divisiveness here.
I'm a Hill supporter but this crap has to stop. Either join in solidarity and stop the ugly, literally by flagging anyone who is spreading disunity and hatered or go take it somewhere else.

You saw it that way. That is an opinion not the truth. We don't know what she meant.
My take was that she was tareferencing that she didn't quit so all of those people could have a voice, so that every american in every state, every citizen in every territory had a chance to vote. I don't even know when that happened last. These people never get to vote and she promised that everyone would and she stuck to it.
That is my OPINION of what her referencing was.

Of course I wasn't looking for anything that could prove she was sending coded messages and looking for something to use as a wedge. Now that you have put it out you can bet there will be some hate troll or other who will opick it up and use it against HRC,

Gee thanks,
Nice work.

You may not want a Democratic President but the world needs it and if you don't get that the future of the world is hanging on this election than you must be illinformed and living in a bubble.

no offense.

Michelle Obama erases McBush's temporary lead in her speech Monday with Obama up by one point. Wait until the effect of Hillary's awesome speech starts to take affect in the next Gallup poll. Remember these polls actually have a two day delay the way they are administered.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:37 PM on 08/27/2008

There could be a problem with the polling, because Hillary didn't talk about Barack's platform agenda. She basically pulled an "I was for (fill in the blank) and Barack has the same idea", so to speak. Some of our neighbors, were upset while watching her because they thought that she didn't say specific thing that Barack has laid out in his agenda. So, although Hillary gave a good (presidential) speech, Barack's poll numbers may not rise from it.

Hillary did a good job at delivering her speech. We were watching CNN and Ann Price-Mills was crying and basically breaking down. We don't know if she's related to Cheryl Mills from the Clinton Administration. We do know that she is on staff at the University of Washington and is from Kent. She's also a Delegate from Washington. She and other passionate Washington Delegates were signing Hillary posters in "silver ink", on Monday (8-25-08), while Paul (Berendt) was trying to herd the delegates in. Some of the delegates are supporting Barack, however, there are many like Ann Price-Mills that were passionate about Hillary, and only Hillary. An unpledged add-on delegate named Victor Collymore said in the meeting that, "THERE'S A SAYING THAT DEMOCRATS FALL IN LOVE WITH THEIR CANDIDATE, BUT THE REPUBLICANS FALL IN LINE. IF WE FALL IN LOVE WITH OUR CANDIDATE, THAT'S PROBLEMATIC." Victor's comments didn't quell the situation, and as you can see, Ann Price-Mills had a complete breakdown on (world news) CNN.

I respect HRC and I liked what I heard last night.

The proof will be in the next 9 weeks----if she does what she said----that is campaign like crazy for Obama. I think she will. If she and Bill don't then I will be saddened.

Our men and women are coming home without limbs or in bags or with PTSD. Health Care, Gay rights, women's rights, supreme court judges---and on and on.

All this is what the election is about---not HRC's ambitions.

Also---if McCain wins, then he would easily beat HRC in 2012--with all the advantages of an incumbent, no war, economy fine------

we will see . . .

In your dreams (unless you're being sarcastic), After four years of McCain, the economy will be on a war footing because we will be trying to project American power into every corner of the world, maybe even lobbing nukes with the Russians.

I am deadly serious. Anyone who thinks a victory over a president McCain in 2012 is a slam dunk is seriously mistaken. Look at Reagan and W. An incumbent has at least a 5 to 10 point advantage--at least. He can set the agenda etc. I am just saying that we need to beat him now; he will be even stronger as an incumbent.

The pundits are saying that although Hillary delivered a great unifying speech, she did not say that Barack is ready to be POTUS. Quite frankly, I think no one would believe Hillary if she had made this pronouncement because of what she said in her kitchen sink primary attacks on Barack. So she really couldn't now creditably say it.

Here's the thing. I don't think she's the right person to say it anyway. She's never been president. Her only experience is as a "junior" senator from New York. The person who can creditably say Barack is ready to be POTUS with credibility is someone who has held the position and was successful. That Democratic president is Bill Clinton.

So the question is: Will Bill Clinton in his speech tonight tell the world why Barack is ready to be POTUS?

I must admit I was quite impressed with Hillary's speech last night. It struck all the right chords with passion, sardonic humor, honesty and inflection that demonstrated she really cares about the nation's future under President Obama if/when this materializes. Her hardest-core supporters may be another story, as I heard more CSPAN callers this AM say they supported her but plan to vote for McCain since they think Obama listened to Rev. Wright's controversial remarks for 20 years, while other callers accused both him & Michelle of being "racists" based on their doctoral theses. This is essentially the same rationale exploited by David Duke when he founded the "National Association for the Advancement of White People," claiming whites are victims of "reverse discrimination" through affirmative action. I wouldn't mind if Obama eventually decides to appoint Hillary to the Supreme Court or perhaps Attorney General. She persuaded me last night that she's not a true egocentrist as I thought during the primaries.

Although Mark Warner gave the keynote address, I thought Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana gave a far superior speech in his animated gestures and speaking style. However, there's no question that Dennis Kucinich gave the liveliest performance of the night earlier as is his trademark. He also received an enthusiastic response from the delegates which was probably underrepresented by the MSM media. I wouldn't know how most news outlets covered the convention since I stayed tune to CSPAN till midnight, then switched to MSNBC to watch Olbermann's panel.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:20 PM on 08/27/2008

Those CSPAN callers are pulling your leg. Gee, I wonder why. Neither Senator nor Mrs Obama has the kind of doctorate that requires a doctoral thesis. Both have juris doctorates from law schools. No thesis required. His undergraduate paper hasn't turned up as both Senator Obama and Columbia report that copies were discarded years ago. So, just what are the nasties referring to? Probably another K K Karl set up. You cannot believe these people. They make it up.

Aleka4 I'm leaving my response her because the extra comments don't work for many. It a right wing talking point to say what Hillary did not say in her speech. But what she did say was great like her closing argument for Obama.

"But remember, before we can keep going, we have to get going by electing Barack Obama president.

We don't have a moment to lose or a vote to spare.

Nothing less than the fate of our nation and the future of our children hang in the balance.

I want you to think about your children and grandchildren come election day. And think about the choices your parents and grandparents made that had such a big impact on your life and on the life of our nation.

We've got to ensure that the choice we make in this election honors the sacrifices of all who came before us, and will fill the lives of our children with possibility and hope.

That is our duty, to build that bright future, and to teach our children that in America there is no chasm too deep, no barrier too great - and no ceiling too high - for all who work hard, never back down, always keep going, have faith in God, in our country, and in each other.

Thank you so much. God bless America and Godspeed to you all."

Hill gave a great CYA (as in cover her *ss) speech last night. She said just enough to make herself viable in 2012 should O lose (and let's face it, we know that's her preferred outcome). As an O supporter, if her theatrics yesterday in the name of so-called "unity" bring more people on board to vote for O then, of course, that's great. But, let's call a spade a spade. Hill did what she needed to do for herself; any benefit to O was just a by-product. If you listen closely, any support Hill pretends to offer is just an afterthought, not the central theme of her words, which is what it should be. As a result, a lot of her supporters still will not be swayed because she is not saying anything about O, the person, and why he should be elected President. For some, voting with the Party will not be enough of a reason to vote for O because they need to be comfortable with O, the candidate, and this is where Hill purposefully falls short.

Hill showed last night that O will have to beat Hill/Bill in the GE just as he did in the Primary.

Meanwhile, Bill continues to undercut O with his references to "X" and "Y" candidates.

She also owed a much more forceful rejection of John McCain, one that named specifics of why he should not be president - not the generic "no way" which fell way short. After her endorsement of him in the primaries, and his usage of her in his ads, a strong and specific rejection was in order. She caused the problem of endorsing John McCain, she didn't exactly fix it last night.

Some people are never satisfied I thought she dissected McBush better than any other speaker last night.

Her Bush and McCain being twins in the twin cities was a classic.

Obama believes in himself as much as Hillary believes in herself. No politician is without ego. Give her credit for delivering a speech that electrified the crowd. Can you imagine how hard it must have been for her? Or are you just coldhearted when it comes to Hillary?

I totally agree about Bill and his "X and Y candidates" comments in Denver speech..He forces me to repeat my previous post on that subject:

"Poor Bill Clinton. He needs therapy so badly. He has nothing left now that he can't muscle in on Hillary's activities. What he does have is a mean streak and a hatred for Barak Obama, Bill's marriage in name only to Hillary was bearable when he thought she would be re-opening the White House door to him for a re-do of his last term. Now that this is impossible and she's not even the VP pick, he has to fight for the spotlight as never before. Shame on Bill Clinton..More shame, that is."

I am constantly amazed at how many mind readers post on this site. They seem to know what people like Bill Clinton think without even knowing him. Truly an amazing act!

This country already got too many pundits. What I know is a lot of repubs trolls came here trying to provoke and divide the dems, but they failed big time. They failed just like Bush did in the last 8 years. They failed just like McCain did in his class. We don't need anymore failures. O, H, and all victims of 8 years-mismanagement stand up united.

I'm not convinced by your interpretation or argument. Hillary said many times that she supported Obama, etc. I believe we should take her words to mean what they say. Your posting presents absoutely no evidence to the contrary, but rather bare assertions. Trying to read some motive other than the support of Obama into it is buying into and promoting Republican talking points. That goes double for the Clinton outright opposition to Obama. It is singularly ludicris to put forth the idea that after serving the Dem. party for several decades and witnessing the last eight years of mismanagement at the hands of the Rep. party that the Clintons would in any way want to prevent the Dems. from returning to the office.

If you are an Obama supporter, then you should stop this nonsensical narrative and refute it at every turn.

Are you sure you want me to "take her words to mean what they say"? I remember Hill saying some "interesting" things about O's candidacy during the Primary.

Given your position, what are your thoughts on Bill's candidates "X" and "Y" commentary?

Hey Mr. Cleveland, if you live in a fantasy world that's o.k. Michelle Obama was amazing and Hilary just blew everyone away. We are a unified party and a great deal was accomplished the past few days. Get used to it.
When I listen to a speach like that, I wonder what is it Republicans stand for? They don't want people to have health care, the don't want equal opportunity, they don't believe in equal education, they don't support the troops or providing world class medical care for them, they believe in war, lies and deception. They believe in war profiteering and sponsoring big oil.
Any rational person would wonder why anyone would identify themselves as being Republican. It just shows how ignorant one can be.
If there's any hope for the future of this country, it's because the Democratic party is strong and thriving. You guys need to crawl back under whatever rock you came out of.
