Corporate sustainability -- no longer just the latest collection of business buzzwords -- now is a required feature in the mission statement, annual report, and work-force makeup of many companies.

In fact, corporate sustainability is becoming more and more important in the business community -- now, you can even track the performances of leading sustainable-driven companies via the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, while the Greenhouse Gas Protocol monitors and measures corporate greenhouse gas emissions.

Companies as varied as DuPont, Unilever, and 3M are among those considered to be "leading the way."

I've heard that school systems in Vermont have converted to WOOD PELLETS. With Vermont winters using oil doesn't make sense. Pellets are easily transportable, as opposed to wood logs. Corporations are like lumbering elephants -- I expect them to lag behind on the "green front" but they will get there eventually...

The ball is rolling, ill give it 5 more years before it really catches on.

Meanwhile more and more consumers in my generation are leaning towards small companies who focus on sustainability and responisble business practices as core values.

People are starting more companies with sustainability and responsible business practices as core values. Im one of them, and ill say right now that i cant see doing it any other way. not just because im young, and living a "green lifestyle". but because its a better, and more profitible way of doing business where everyone benefits. this is the future.

Maybe it would be more correct to say, 'Green Businesses That Do Right, Do Well, EVENTUALLY'

The issue facing many businesses is one of choosing greater long term profits over possibly lesser short term profits, from a shift to sustainable practices. So far, only business leaders with vision and courage have made the shift.
