WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Reports of strong support within John McCain's presidential campaign for Independent Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman as the Republican candidate for vice president are not a fairy tale. Influential McCain backers, plus McCain himself, would pick the pro-choice liberal from Connecticut if they thought they could get away with it.

But they can't get away with it -- and this has been made clear to McCain by none other than Joe Lieberman himself.

Lieberman surely doesn't know that much about Republican politics, but he has close Republican friends. One of them prevailed on Lieberman to tell McCain that a McCain-Lieberman ticket would be a disaster for all concerned, and especially for the GOP.

It was posted by a comedian and had no link to the 'ad' in question because the 'ad' does NOT exist.

Don't worry tho, there are plenty of other smears and bad policy coming out of the McSame campaign that will sustain your outrage. May I suggest his tax policies, his insane hunger for 100 years of war, his attempt to privatize Social Security, his tacit support for creationism or any number of FLIP-FLOPS on issues over the past 2 years.

Politically, Lieberman is an excellent choice for McCain. He makes Florida and Connecticut quite likely, with Connecticut creating a large symbolic victory -- for getting into the Northeast.

Except for trhe Iraq war Lieberman has voted the straight party line and is very popular, in part for his major import in saving the Groton submarine shipyard and the United Technologies facilities outside of Hartford. Thousands of jobs held by Democrats, Republicans, Independents et al were saved. He gained a hair above 50% of the vote in the 2006 Ct. Senatorial election. Lamont won the Democratic primary with 48% of the vote and the proceeded to have his clock cleaned in November. Lieberman has a resovoir of in state support.
