Back in primary season, Hillary Clinton said her campaign was dedicated to serving people "with needs" while her opponent's appeal was aesthetic in nature, and therefore best appreciated by well-heeled voters. The message: Hillary was fighting for you, while Obama was talking for them.

This line of attack was born in a 2007 Mark Penn memo, in which the strategist wrote: "We are the candidate of people with needs. We win women, lower classes, and Democrats (about 3 to 1 in our favor). Obama wins men, upper class, and independents ... "

But, in an interesting reversal, some of the most high-profile Hillary die-hards at this late date are pretty wealthy by any standard. And despite the tiny degree of actual policy dispute between Clinton and Obama during the primaries, some of these well-off dissidents are flirting with the idea of helping out John McCain in the general election.

In an article published the morning before Sen. Clinton's Tuesday address, multi-millionaire Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild spread some venom in the Washington Independent, indirectly referring to Obama a "loser" and someone "who's not qualified to be president." When asked if she would put her rolodex to work for Obama, soliciting the same kinds of donations that she has for so many Democratic candidates in the past, Rothschild said she has not decided, and added that she could work for the GOP this year, though "more in sadness than anger."

In a previous interview with the Huffington Post, Rothschild had said that the convention could be a time and place for intra-party healing. "There's a lot he can do at the convention to prove his respect for both Clintons. That would be very, very welcome," she said in July. "If that were done, it would be inevitable that millions of people would support Obama with time, money and votes."

Apparently, she doesn't think much of what's happened so far in Denver, where both Hillary and Bill have been given prime speaking slots. (Repeated requests for a follow-up interview with Rothschild were not granted.)

She is not the only such mega-donor to have resisted the purported unity project in Denver, either. As Joan Walsh has reported, Esprit founder Susie Thompkins Buell only decided to come to the convention at the last minute. While here, she has held a fundraiser, but only for her new political action committee -- not Obama or the DNC. Hollywood billionaire Haim Saban is also reportedly on the fence, and has yet to chip in any money to the Obama campaign.

Last night, when Hillary rhetorically asked her supporters whether they had only participated in the campaign "for her" -- and not for those in need of the help her campaign wanted to provide -- the assumed answer was, of course, "no." In light of Clinton's old charge that Obama's supporters were vanity-stricken elitists, the fact that some of her wealthiest fans still can't bring themselves to back her former opponent appears, well, rich.

Back in primary season, Hillary Clinton said her campaign was dedicated to serving people "with needs" while her opponent's appeal was aesthetic in nature, and therefore best appreciated by well-heele...

Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild? I think I''ve seen her dancing on stage somewhere in Vegas. Guess she struck gold and found a Rothschild, a la Anna Nicole Smith.

Hey Mrs. Moneybags, haven't you hears, millions and millions of people already do support O with time, votes and lots and lots and lots and lots of money. Your money is no better than ours, so just keep it, as you obviously need yours more than I need the $25 I sent to Obama, Dennis Kucinich and Hillary Clinton this morning.

Irrespective of a particular socio-economic status, I can understand why die hard Clintonites might choose to sit this one out, but I cannot fathom why they would act as spoilers and switch sides.... such behavior is immature and not worthy of the privilege of voting or the responsibility of representing voters.

These rich people are not interested in if a Democrat gets in there who will do something for the people, they are only interested in their access to the president and influence on him once he is elected and their own enhanced reputation for being a valued hanger-onner. However, they are too hoity-toity to hang around with a black man, and Obama has no use for these vain, self-centered people.

It goes beyond race. The repubs have shown how incompetent they are at economic stategies. These rich people are scared that if our country does hot have someone who understands the economy they stand to lose money. It's all about money. Hillary did not advocate taxing the rich and making them pay their fair share. Nor did Hillary discuss closing tax loopholes for rich corporations. So these wealthy individuals who backed her thought they would be safer with her than with McCain who thinks just like Bush and would end up losing more money under his lack of leadership. Now, Obama does talk about making big business pay their fair share of taxes and also is an advocate for closing tax loopholes which help the rich at the expense of the middle class. This is a direct threat to the wealthy. Obama even goes so far as to mention companies like Exxon and wants to make them pay a windfall tax on their huge profits. So it only makes sense that if they can't get Hillary nominated then the next best thing is to move to the other side where they know at least McCain will continue to give them more tax breaks and allow the loop holes which benefit the rich to continue to exist. It's all about money and greed and has little to do with race.

These are the very same people who worry about Obama's support for Israel. They are ultra-conservative, Israeli hawks. They will never support Obama.

We all felt different before Bill and Hillary showed us why it's important for the Democrats to win. Let's not poke at them. Maybe they feel as different as I do after listening to both Clintons speak. I remembered what I love about Bill and I am filled with gratitude to Hillary. Let's get to work. Voting alone won't be nearly enough. Get in touch with your local campaign and get busy knocking on doors and making phone calls. Identify people who support Barrack and may need a ride on election day. I drew in my hair dresser last week and a neighbor this week. The first Obama house party I went to had four dems, four independents and six republicans for Obama. My evangelical neighbor is voting for him but doesn't want others to know. A wealthy friend in this republican town told me that some of her wealthy friends are voting for Obama but they don't want other republican town business people to know. Don't assume anything. I'm currently having conversations with a friend who is big on gun rights but is troubled by the 232% increase in income the republicans gave the wealthy since Reagan and the 10% they allowed the bottom 90%. I find out both sides of information that might affect a particular friend and then ask them to explain their side to me. Sometimes I have something to contribute!

She finally got some sleep, that's all. As the primaries dragged on, she looked older and older - they both did.

God she's been campaigning for 18 months; eating crap and not resting. She's had a couple of months to recuperate and she looked great. She looked beautiful and rested and a little slimmer last night and tonight.

All that has happened through the primary season and with Hill and Bill both pulling it out for Obama and that is all you can think of to say?

Shallow, truly shallow.

How sad that in this country, a country which has clearly done a great deal for these individuals, they can't swallow a little pride and do what's best for the country that has served them so well.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

It is confusing that these folks pop up on the radar screen screaming injustice against Hillary, yet they do not lift a finger to help Hillary retire her campaign debt.

Do they really care about Hillary? What is the real issue? Pumas and rich Hillary supporters show us you care by retiring her debt. Show us you care. So far your behavior smacks of sexism and racism. Show us you're different than that. Show us you're better than that. Show us with your pocket books... let us hear about it in the news "PUMAs and Rich Clinton Supporters Retire Her Campaign Debt," Words are cheap,
show us with your actions and let others speak your praises.

I hope you're right. With the party united, we stand a good chance of getting Barak into the Whitehouse. Wow, what a happy day that will be... like a cloud lifted off of us.

Oh, screw Hillary's die-hards. Let 'em vote for McCain.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:30 PM on 08/27/2008

They were ALWAYS going to vote for McCain. They only feigned support for Hillary to get her in - knowing that the Repugs would destroy Hill (sadly). There were too many skeletons in the Clinton's closet that the Repugs would drag through the mud.

Personally, I think both Clinton's should be thankful that Hill did not get the nomination. There reputations would have been absolutely destroyed.

Now, after Hill and Bill's speeches and support of Obama, they have been redeemed and can resume their rightful place in the political arena.

I can't match the money gathering power of a Rothschild, but I had already decided I was going to double down for Obama this month, and every month from now until the election. Lets all double down! If we all double our monthly contribution maybe the Rothschilds of the world won't matter so much anymore.
