Back in primary season, Hillary Clinton said her campaign was dedicated to serving people "with needs" while her opponent's appeal was aesthetic in nature, and therefore best appreciated by well-heeled voters. The message: Hillary was fighting for you, while Obama was talking for them.

This line of attack was born in a 2007 Mark Penn memo, in which the strategist wrote: "We are the candidate of people with needs. We win women, lower classes, and Democrats (about 3 to 1 in our favor). Obama wins men, upper class, and independents ... "

But, in an interesting reversal, some of the most high-profile Hillary die-hards at this late date are pretty wealthy by any standard. And despite the tiny degree of actual policy dispute between Clinton and Obama during the primaries, some of these well-off dissidents are flirting with the idea of helping out John McCain in the general election.

In an article published the morning before Sen. Clinton's Tuesday address, multi-millionaire Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild spread some venom in the Washington Independent, indirectly referring to Obama a "loser" and someone "who's not qualified to be president." When asked if she would put her rolodex to work for Obama, soliciting the same kinds of donations that she has for so many Democratic candidates in the past, Rothschild said she has not decided, and added that she could work for the GOP this year, though "more in sadness than anger."

In a previous interview with the Huffington Post, Rothschild had said that the convention could be a time and place for intra-party healing. "There's a lot he can do at the convention to prove his respect for both Clintons. That would be very, very welcome," she said in July. "If that were done, it would be inevitable that millions of people would support Obama with time, money and votes."

Apparently, she doesn't think much of what's happened so far in Denver, where both Hillary and Bill have been given prime speaking slots. (Repeated requests for a follow-up interview with Rothschild were not granted.)

She is not the only such mega-donor to have resisted the purported unity project in Denver, either. As Joan Walsh has reported, Esprit founder Susie Thompkins Buell only decided to come to the convention at the last minute. While here, she has held a fundraiser, but only for her new political action committee -- not Obama or the DNC. Hollywood billionaire Haim Saban is also reportedly on the fence, and has yet to chip in any money to the Obama campaign.

Last night, when Hillary rhetorically asked her supporters whether they had only participated in the campaign "for her" -- and not for those in need of the help her campaign wanted to provide -- the assumed answer was, of course, "no." In light of Clinton's old charge that Obama's supporters were vanity-stricken elitists, the fact that some of her wealthiest fans still can't bring themselves to back her former opponent appears, well, rich.

Back in primary season, Hillary Clinton said her campaign was dedicated to serving people "with needs" while her opponent's appeal was aesthetic in nature, and therefore best appreciated by well-heele...

Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, Esprit founder Susie Thompkins Buell and the other rich holdouts are contemplating voting for McCain because they have not lost homes; they have great healthcare; the high cost of food and gas doesn't affect them - caviar has always been expensive and frankly, they believe if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it anyway - and they can afford to fly to Europe for their pro-choice and birth control needs. However, their vote for McCain would certainly reveal their hypocrisy over the years. You are not one of them! Don't allow their vote to influence your vote, one way or the other.

I totally agree with you. They are not one of us and to be frankly, Republicans policies favors them, so believe me, they are really more comfortable with McCain. Our working class five donations will put Obama in the White House and then those same arrogant hypocrites will be the first to seek invitations to every White House functions. Just a bunch of spoil brats elitist.

Some of the bitter broomstickers will never be "won over" because it's really all about them and not about OUR country and what's best for the citizens. Oh well!

Bitter broomstickers, LOL. I really liked HRC's speech last night and her nifty speech for acclimation during the roll call today, and then Pres. Clinton was terrific tonight also. And it was nice seeing them afterward sitting as a family during B'idens speech.

Go Democrats

It's over, can't we get past that and focus on getting Obama the Prez? Why do people like you want to continue to stir the pot? Let them be, for gawd's sake. They graciously stepped aside for Obama, so leave them alone.

She told 'em what she thinks. I think she meant it. We'll see if they actually get that message or opt to be hypocrites.

Lynn Forester isn't a windbag and certainly isn't stupid. She is a very calculating business person who married a very wealthy man 25 years her senior. It's all about money and positioning. Lady Lynn and the Clintons go back in years and are business friends along the line of extending media/communication access throughout Europe. The familiar names of board members of Forester's European media company are interesting when we think about access to the White House. It's about investments, liquidity and management of resources. They were introduced by a Congressman from NY when Bill was President. The deal was sealed early. Lady Lynn Forester Rothschield,s husband, who is literally European banking, has no financial boundaries. There are so many connections with power and wealth until it's not even funny! Lady Lynn just doesn't like to lose.

In other words...Lady Lynn is your basic "Influence Buyer". The reason she can just as easily pour money in the McCain campaign is because her only issue, her only cause in life, her very reason for breathing is simply to make more money. Bribing/Buying politicians is simply a means to an end...that end being, make more money.

She shouldn't have lost. This should be Clinton's nomination. But she'll be back in 2012.

I'm looking forward to voting for her.

But then reality stepped in and said 2008 was not to be Hillary Clinton's year to be the Dem nominee. Why are you folks so obsessed with a Clinton MUST be in the White House at all costs? 2012 is a long time from now and a lot can happen.
There is this REAL cult of personality surrounding the Clintons that is more bizarre than anything I've seen before.
I see Hillary Clinton following the mold of Ted Kennedy. Sure he didn't win his presidential bid - just being a Kennedy was not enough - but he returned to the Senate and became one of the most influential Democratic politicians in modern history. I think the same could be said of Hillary Clinton - she didn't win and just being a Clinton was not enough - but I think she has a bright political future in the Senate where she can become one of the most influential voices in the Senate.

Lord the bloggers here have zero brain cells. Every time you attack Hillary you push her supporters away from Obama. Her picture is ugly her wrinkles are showing grow up the race with Hillary is over! The Clintons are no longer running, the fight is with McCain now. Maybe it’s a bunch of republicans on this site that want to keep the war between Hillary and Obama going so they can slip McCain into office.

Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't noticed because I actually read the article. itsafreakingame makes a good point. Today should be the last we hear of Hillary's disgruntled supporters. Hillary and Bill both did a great job of encouraging unity.

I agree. Hillary is really attractive. Why on earth would they use this photo of her. She spoke for at least 10 minutes and I'm sure they had a better shot. I also think she gave a dynamic speech. If Lady Lynn wants to support McCain then let her. She'll just be flushing her own money down the toilet.

Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild. Who would even call themselves that in America.
She must be a regency restoration snob with money that will eventually disappear and leave her with an empty title, if that even is one. Please stop calling yourself a democrat now

She lives in the UK, not the USA. And she's married to a Sir Rothschild, hence the "Lady" part of her name is a title of nobility. Something she can't legally use in the USA without Congressional approval. Probably why she no longer lives here on a regular basis. Plus she's a member of the Bilderberg group, among other things. Which is where she met her husband via Henry Kissinger. I find it hard to believe, with the company she keeps, that she could have ever been a Democrat. Cause she'd have been belittled and attacked on a daily basis and scorned by all her "friends".

She is not really a Democrat. She place her money were it is convenient to her money making machine. She is a briber. Her money will stop Obama from becoming President.

And they tried to call Barack elitist? Hillary's wealthy supporters and John McCain are the epitome of elitism. They embody all that snobbish entitlement and privilege stereotypically represent. They have found out that the ticket can't be bought after investing so much in the wrong candidate. No return on their investment this election year.

Good riddance.

Voter suppression is a reality this November folks lets counter the MSM the local po’lice and these Rethuglicans with hundred of thousands of video cameras.

Let’s have cameras at the voting precincts, in the neighborhoods leading to those voting precincts, on the freeway and highways exits let’s put people in building with cameras everywhere.

Let’s not leave this up to just the Democratic Party lets all as citizens of this country get our f--king cameras and make sure if there is some BS we have it documented.

That's absolutely a great idea. With the wonderful high voter turnout that is expected, help will be desperately needed at the polls to make sure everyone votes. Let's rally an army of volunteer poll WATCHERS / workers to let those that would sabotage our rights, know we are on it ....and on to them.
