Back in primary season, Hillary Clinton said her campaign was dedicated to serving people "with needs" while her opponent's appeal was aesthetic in nature, and therefore best appreciated by well-heeled voters. The message: Hillary was fighting for you, while Obama was talking for them.

This line of attack was born in a 2007 Mark Penn memo, in which the strategist wrote: "We are the candidate of people with needs. We win women, lower classes, and Democrats (about 3 to 1 in our favor). Obama wins men, upper class, and independents ... "

But, in an interesting reversal, some of the most high-profile Hillary die-hards at this late date are pretty wealthy by any standard. And despite the tiny degree of actual policy dispute between Clinton and Obama during the primaries, some of these well-off dissidents are flirting with the idea of helping out John McCain in the general election.

In an article published the morning before Sen. Clinton's Tuesday address, multi-millionaire Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild spread some venom in the Washington Independent, indirectly referring to Obama a "loser" and someone "who's not qualified to be president." When asked if she would put her rolodex to work for Obama, soliciting the same kinds of donations that she has for so many Democratic candidates in the past, Rothschild said she has not decided, and added that she could work for the GOP this year, though "more in sadness than anger."

In a previous interview with the Huffington Post, Rothschild had said that the convention could be a time and place for intra-party healing. "There's a lot he can do at the convention to prove his respect for both Clintons. That would be very, very welcome," she said in July. "If that were done, it would be inevitable that millions of people would support Obama with time, money and votes."

Apparently, she doesn't think much of what's happened so far in Denver, where both Hillary and Bill have been given prime speaking slots. (Repeated requests for a follow-up interview with Rothschild were not granted.)

She is not the only such mega-donor to have resisted the purported unity project in Denver, either. As Joan Walsh has reported, Esprit founder Susie Thompkins Buell only decided to come to the convention at the last minute. While here, she has held a fundraiser, but only for her new political action committee -- not Obama or the DNC. Hollywood billionaire Haim Saban is also reportedly on the fence, and has yet to chip in any money to the Obama campaign.

Last night, when Hillary rhetorically asked her supporters whether they had only participated in the campaign "for her" -- and not for those in need of the help her campaign wanted to provide -- the assumed answer was, of course, "no." In light of Clinton's old charge that Obama's supporters were vanity-stricken elitists, the fact that some of her wealthiest fans still can't bring themselves to back her former opponent appears, well, rich.

Back in primary season, Hillary Clinton said her campaign was dedicated to serving people "with needs" while her opponent's appeal was aesthetic in nature, and therefore best appreciated by well-heele...

These wealthy society women are diletantes who see politics as a form of amusement. They certainly do not care about the issues.

These people are Republicans who became friends with Hillary and Bill. There is nothing wrong with that. On the other hand, Americans need someone in the White House who is going to fight for us. McSame is not going to do it. What did the Republicans do when they had the power? two recessions, two wars, reinforced the idea of two americas and the list goes on.

Awww, poor Lady von Floofy, won't get to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom nor dance at the White House ball.

Oh woe.

I weep copious tears for her sad plight.

All of these women might be rich, but they are also extremely shallow. Here we have the proof that money doesn't buy you intelligence. Ok, I understand they are disapointed beacause their candidate didn't win, but PLEASE, are they really going to vote for McCain? These women are not Democrats they are Republicans!. They are so detached from the real world that they have no idea what the avarage families go through. I guess they want the war to continue, they want us to depend on foreign oil, they want conservative judges to be appointed to the Supreme Court etc., etc. We were all very passionate about our candidate, but it is OVER. These women are ignorant. The Democratic party doesn't need them. Obama doesn't need their money.

Agreed.....they are ignorant and has shallow minds. They were there "JUST" for Hillary and not the country.

BRATS them women we should call them. When Daddy can't buy them what they wanted perhaps they gripe and----act like brats. Just like now.

Losers.

The wealthy control politics and the media in this country, and they don't have to be
american citizens. Wealth trumps democracy and you aren't going to change that
by voting.

This reminds me of when I used to play sports as a kid. The wealthy parents in town made sure all their kids were on the same team, thinking that would make their children win the championship. They threw a fit when the team I was on,made up of minorities and poor white kids, beat them badly. These parents were furious, they filed protests and actually organized a rally to convince people to not go and support our team as we played in the inter-city tournament. I guess this is how rich people are raised to act. But if you think about it, the Republican party's policies are centered around letting rich people pay no taxes and get more money. It's no wonder these rich supporters of Hillary would jump ship.

I thought Hillary's speech was great, just five months late.

Glad the Dems are trying to unite for a win, I'll be glad when this dog and pony show is over. It all smells of damage control and opportunistic motives. But hey, the Clintons now feel good about letting Obama win- lol.

Now is the time to get back to addressing real issues hitting us hard at home.

It really says something that Obama is piszing off the "Rich Democrats" like Lady Whatsherface.

They are not getting the special attention that they believe their money deserves, and they are unhappy about it.

Obama is for the regular people, the $10 and $20 dollar contributors. Lady Von Muneybagz donated all her money to Clinton and now will not see any special favors as a "return on investment".

If she were a real Democrat, she would support Obama, simply because Barack's stance on the issues are 95% identical to those of Clinton's. So it begs the question, if you supported Hillary and not Obama, what is the sticking point? It ain't the issues.

The good news is that the millions of small donors have made the likes of Lady Von Muneybagz unnecessary. Very sweet indeed.

You are correct in our observations about Lady Whatchamacallit". She is media mogul who looks to Murdoch as her mentor who she really respects. She also stated (see my link further back on this interview) in her interview with NY Magazine that she thinks Democrats are better for business than are Republicans. So, why the shift to McCain? Simple. As you said, Obama is for the regular people and has made no bones about making the rich pay their fair share of taxes. So, just what was Hillary promising Lady Moneybagz? Hmmmmmmm something fishy here.

They thought that they had bought themselves a president, and now are frustrated to learn that they haven't (and they haven't even bought themselves a VP)>

Yep...

Now we understand why Hillary still has so much campaign debt. With friends like these no wonder Hillary has decided to work with Obama.

Where is Obama's leadership capabilities in all this? He has attack dogs in his camp he can't or won't deal with to keep the peace. Apparently a lot of them felt the Hill's speech fell short!!!!
With these people HRC can't put a foot right. Most of the hate is still from O's camp.

What? Where are you going with this line of reasoning? This woman is a Clinton supporter, you can't flip the script just to suite your bitter, flawed argument.

These people are not true Democrats. True Dems go with the person nominated because, as Hillery said yesterday, it's the party goals you are voting for the whole party. No candidate will fill everyones needs ever and you have to find one who comes the closest and the party that seems to be in line with most of what you believe.

How about this for a dark theory? Hillary made a deal with McCain. He steps aside after four years. She endorses Obama, but not really. Hints broadly to her supporters that voting for McCain wouldn't be THAT bad. Doesn't say word one about what a McCain presidency might mean for women. Instead just keeps campaigning for herself on Obama's dime. Bill Clinton sits there looking like (put in your own word -- I have mine). Billy Boy splits so he doesn't have to endure Obama's acceptance speech....... I'm trying to remember here....did she attack McCain's ad using her when she was up on that stage in Denver? Hummmm. I don't believe so! Gee, I think instead she did a video on herself. And who paid for that piece of work?????

It angers the wealthy that they cannot buy happiness. And that sometimes their vote counts only as one person. And their opinion is not popular. Obama is gracious and will do great things for women. I suggest that the Rothschild fortune be spent on those who need help, not on vanity politics.

I think Obama has already shown he treats women in general and his wife in particular a whole lot better than Bill did. And, in fact, NARAL endorsed Obama not Hillary because she wasn't available when they needed help with some legislation and Obama was.

I'm having serious trouble understanding whether or not these people are really and truly democrats or just ornery ego-crats. Their devotion to a person over a nation is truly the epitome of being unpatriotic. Hillary did the RIGHT thing, why can't they?
