Michael Phelps Book: Swimmer Scores $1.6M Advance

EVEN before landing back in the US, Olympic swimming champ Michael Phelps, winner of eight gold medals in Beijing and the man being hailed as the greatest Olympian of all time, was converting his fame into a big pool of Yankee dollars.

Phelps snagged an estimated $1.6 million advance from the Free Press imprint of Simon & Schuster for his latest book, to be called "Built to Succeed."

Waxman Literary Agency, working with Phelps' long-time talent manager Peter Carlisle of Octagon, brokered the deal, which had a $1 million floor price just to get into the hunt.

Okay, he won some medals 8 to be exact but a book is actually not necessary.

I would think this young man, a hero to millions of American children and adults, would have something motivational to say about how he overcame the effects ADHD and dedicated himself to a goal beating a record that stood for over 30 years.

Even if he makes $10,000,000 on the book that means his per hour rate of wage against his thousands upon thousands of hours of dedicated practice probably will work out to $4.00.

This would be why the publishing industry is going down the tubes. They give anybody a book deal who, you know, did some stuff.

Michael Phelps is a great swimmer. He won a lot of medals for swimming. Not to diminish his talent in the water, but are we so into Phelps that we have to now hear daily updates about him, and are we really going to stand in line all Harry Potter-esque waiting for his book to drop?

Book deals are mostly instantaneous cash-in on fame and spotlight. That's why there are tons of books clogging up your local book stores. And why book deals are still being made given the fact that most people don't read anymore in this era of hight-speed Internet, HD TV, and Smartphone.

As it is true that most people do not read anymore..I must say that in heavy commuter cities, we still read quite a lot. I am always reading on my commutte in NYC.
