***UPDATE*** The Washington Post reports that Obama will use the speech to outline a new direction for America:

A day after Democrats officially named him as their presidential candidate, Barack Obama goes before a stadium crowd Thursday night to formally accept the nomination and lay out a plan to lead the nation in a new direction at home and abroad...

...In the speech, which caps the four-day Democratic National Convention and opens Obama's campaign for the White House as his party's nominee, Obama will offer "a fundamentally new direction to get America back on track, both here and around the world," said David Plouffe, his campaign manager. Appearing on morning television talk shows, Plouffe said Obama would explain his plans for dealing with the economy, health care and education, as well as international challenges such as threats to the United States and strained relations with other countries.

***UPDATE*** ABC News lists what they think Obama needs to accomplish with his speech tonight:

Barack Obama's chief challenges tonight are to persuade voters he's sufficiently seasoned for the presidency, better define his theme of "change" and cement his advantages on key domestic issues, chiefly the economy.

There's more: Obama needs also to expand his support among older, more reliable voters; maintain his lead on personal attributes such as empathy; protect himself on consistency; and capitalize on his advantages in enthusiasm and an aura of optimism.

And, as much as any other, to tie John McCain to the unpopular George W. Bush.

Not a short order for a night's work, but potentially a crucial one. The contest has been close; 49-45 percent Obama-McCain among likely voters in our pre-convention poll. Arguably that's closer than it should be, given the flight from the Republican Party and the broad public discontent that's accompanied the faltering economy, the unpopular war in Iraq and dissatisfaction with the incumbent president.

Barack Obama gave the Wall Street Journal a little preview of his Thursday night speech:

Barack Obama said he plans to focus on the struggles of middle-class Americans, including their tax burden, in his Thursday night speech accepting the Democratic nomination for president.

"The single most important thing I have to make clear is the choice we have in November between the same failed policy of the last eight years for the middle class and the new agenda to boost income for Americans and help families who are struggling," he said in a brief interview with The Wall Street Journal Tuesday. "I will make that contrast very clearly."

Story continues below

ABC News has more on Obama's speech-writing process:

Because of the protracted primary season, Obama is playing catch-up a bit. He wrote an outline while on vacation in Hawaii, but didn't get any time for serious work while there with his family.

To prepare, he read the convention acceptance speeches of former Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, as well as less successful Democratic presidential nominees Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

In addition to laying out his plans and providing some inspiring oratory -- though not as much as in 2004, aides cautioned -- one of the goals of the speech is to argue that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is no maverick, but rather, someone who represents a doubling-down of the current policies of President George W. Bush.

Meanwhile, John McCain staffers are already mocking the stage on which Obama will appear. Reuters reports that it will look like "a miniature Greek temple." ThinkProgress points out that the Virginia Republican Party went for a similar style at their convention this year.

It's not going to be only what Obama says, but how he says it. Personally, I think he has made a big mistake by not using the opportunity of an "up close" and "personal energy" with the crowd in an indoor forum.

Obama oftern gives the impression of being an outside fighter, not an inside fighter. The outdoor arena is going to cement that even further.

He doesn't seem to realize it's not how he connects with the screaming masses that count, it's how he connects with the viewer sitting home watching from afar.

What? Is the camera angle "closer" for viewers at home in an indoor arena versus an outdoor one??? Speaking of energy . . . is it lessened with 72,000 people versus around 4,000? Feels more inclusive than less to me, I know ordinary people who now get to be a part of something anything but.

I hope Obama keeps to the high road in his speech rather than sell his soul to the demon negative advertising. Then we can all rest assured that when he is sworn in as the next president of the United States, there won't be a devil in the White House.

When Obama gives his speech he should clearly and forcefully stand by the principles that have inspired his campaign thus far - the honesty and integrity and the willingness to fight hard but fair. Let the people know that his soul, unlike that of McSame is not for sale so that we all know that when Obama is sworn in as the next President, there won't be a devil in the White House.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's big speech on Thursday night will be delivered from an elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple.

Too staid for my tastes. What about a giant plaster Lincoln head descending from the sky with Obama inside, and once it hits the stage he breaks through out of the top hat like the Hulk? Or how about the lights come up to reveal statues of Jesus, MLK, Gandhi, and The One — except his isn’t a statue, it’s really him and he was just standing perfectly still. Then he comes “magically” to life as the camera hits him.

The Greeks pioneered government based on democracy (flawed though it was), so if the Obama campaign is trying to make people think of Greece, I fail to see why that would be a bad thing.

Also, plenty of Republicans (including good ol' G.W. Bush) have used similar backdrops, so - pot, meet kettle.

I don't mind thinking of Greece. Athens is really a beautiful place. So it will just bring back fond memories for me. Maybe, I will go to the Greek Festival this weekend here in Columbus.

I've been searching long and hard for one of you to give me a reason to vote for McICanTakeAJoke that has nothing to do with Obama. For one of you to explain to me why this "maverick" of 30 years senatorial experience that has accomplished so much for the people isn't 20 points ahead already against a junior senator most nobody heard of 5 years ago that again has nothing to do with Obama. Take your time...I'll wait...until November.

I have been wondering how much it would cost the taxpayers in Air Force One and secret service if the McCains were in the White House. Surely Cindy would not be happy with one, such a small house. Would Cindy have to jet to all these different houses, only instead of her own jet it will now be Air Force One at $30,000 an hour? Would they vacation in 7 houses, requiring communications systems etc. installed in all of them?

Are you ignorant or what? You do realize that some of those homes that they own are being lived in by family members, right? And that some of the others are being rented out, right? So then you know that these homes are not sitting around waiting for someone to fly to them and occupy them right? If not then you are ignorant. By the way. Why is it that liberals complain that they ant more money and then insult those those that already have it? Are you that jealous that you can't be happy for someone else's success? How sad.

Listen tro//, your guy spends his life living off money OTHER MEN made. Enjoying the good life off the efforts of others. That is all he has ever been and all he will ever be. A leech. And that is the way he would run this country.

The issue is not (entirely) how wealthy he is. That would be fine - if he wasn't calling Obama elitist. By painting Obama as a latte-drinking, Volvo-driving liberal, he opens himself up to scrutiny about his multiple homes, $500 shoes, and private jets.

In addition, his wealth is actually his wife's - and she inherited it. Again, not a bad thing, but it is not his personal success that made him rich. Republicans attacked Kerry because he had married a wealthy heiress, calling him a gigolo. So they have opened the door to being attacked on that front as well.

I also think it's worth noting how wealthier people handle their money. I look at people like Bill and Melinda Gates, who give millions of dollars to their foundation, which indicates that they actually, you know, care about the world. If you hoard your wealth rather than helping people in need that is your choice. But how can I trust you when you say you want to help working Americans if you can but don't?

Peter Cooper (wealthy 19th century industrialist) once said: "I do not recognize myself as owner of one dollar of the wealth that has come into my hands. I am simply responsible for the management of an estate which belongs to humanity."

That is the philosophy that I would like an American president to have. I think, between the two, Obama comes a whole lot closer.

It wouldn't be a so bad if George McCain could realize that people would like to be successful like him. It's just hard when you've lost your job, have medical bills due to illness and are about to lose your only home. Or, maybe you lost your home due to some natural disaster. What George McCain needs to do is not just visit the areas for a photo op, he needs to roll up his sleeves and do something to help those less fortunate than he. Not everyone can be born with a silver foot in his mouth, then marry a beer distributorship heiress and call it community property.

it isn't about being jealous of someone else's success. its about being upset that some of those who succeed seem to forget the society that made it possible and don't want to give back to that society so that others can make it too. very few people make it all on their lonesome, and hoarding wealth doesn't help the general population.

McCain is the very dangerous and sick one. The thought of him as president makes me sick to my stomach. The Republicans would mock whatever the Dems do, it is their style-negativity. Really they offer nothing to the public that is positive-where is their plan? Instead they spend all of their time criticizing and bashing.
It is unfortunately true that is time to tear down McCain and expose the truth about him-he is not a maverick (no way, no how), he has a horrible temper and disposition, he is on the low side intellectually, he is a bit of a bully and his idea of foreign policy is swaggering and bragging. He is TOTALLY in the past, in his POW days, and he doesn't even know how to email or use the internet. Why on earth would anyone vote for someone like this??? Experience? Blccch....who wants more years of these same awful policies....you have to really be stupid to vote for McCain or afraid of the future, afraid of a black man as president.....
McCain-what a JERK!

McCain can mock Obama all he wants just as he did when Obama went to Germany and spoke there but it won;t do any good. The fact is, when Obama spoke in Germany to a cheering audience, it was something McCain could have never done. Yes, McCain would have gotten the same size crowd but he would have been booed. All this petty criticism of Obama as a celebrity and the arena as a "greek temple" shows desperation and jealousy for that matter. It's just too transparently sad.

no, Germans can't vote here, but a president candidate demonstrating that he understands how to be diplomatic with other nations gives Obama points in my book. the point is to show Americans (and the rest of the world) that Obama will not simply repeat all of bush's policies without investigating if they are successful or not.

McCain's new TV ad refers to Obama as "dangerous". It's now time, if not past that, for Obama to refer to McCain in his speech as someone with 'tired reckless ideas and a man, who for all his decades of experience, has learned less than nothing."

You don't call doing business transactions with two known terrorists as dangerous? If that's the case then we can expect more of the same as when Clinton was in office. The U.S. was attacked time and time again and Clinton didn't do squat. I expect the same from Barry.

If Obama were to reveal in his speech: Over one hundred banks are on the FDIC watch list. Over x number corporationas and their employees have been bankrupted or shipped overseas since 1980. X number since 2000. The national deficit has increased from x to y since 1980. X number since 2000. The American banks have created innovative debt instruments that has inflated the American currency and caused numerous bubbles and collapses since 1980, each successively worse than the previous one. Now the entire banking season is imperiled. And our dollar is being degraded.
Over x million manufacturing and technological jobs have been lost since 1980, x jobs since 2000. Our national debt has burgeoned form x billions in 1980 to x trillions today. X hundred billions since 2000.
" All these dismal facts are shared with my fellow citizens to show that we are facing a crisis maybe more serious than any crisis faced in the history of our country." And so on.
If these data were shared with the proper blame placed on incompetent leadership and the greed of financial institutions and speculators and unfair trade arrangements and so, it would dismay some people and astonish the rest. And the people would say "We better vote for this rare duck for telling the truth."

Sure then let's put Obama in office so he can take over the banks. And then once again liberals will be crying about how they can't qualify for loans and that the government should force banks to give them loans that they can't pay back. Sounds like a plan to me.

Ok Americans. Since you can’t do your own homework I did some for you. Wrap your minds around these F A C T S. Per Forbes magazine, the top 3 presidents in US, Post World War history, are all DEMS. Republicans FAIL. SIMPLE as that. Look at all the numbers. It’s astonishing.

Postwar Presidencies Ranked By Six Measures Of Economic Performance:

#1 Clinton #2 Johnson #3 Kennedy

Why on God's GREEN EARTH would you even consider electing A Republican considering the state our country is in? How many failed Republican administrations will it take before you realize you are consistently voting against your best interests.

John McCain, I AM NOT a Georgian, I AM AN AMERICAN. Start putting the interests of MY COUNTRY 1st!!!!
