A three-metre (10ft) python has killed a student zookeeper who let the snake out of its enclosure in Venezuela while working a night shift at the zoo.

Horrified colleagues at the Caracas zoo had to beat the snake to make it release the body of Erick Arrieta, whose head it was swallowing, local media reported.

Marks on the biology student's wrist suggested the snake had bitten him before crushing him to death.

What hadn't they fed the thing before? Python don't usually attack something as big as a human unless they are VERY hungry!

Tragic

A ten foot hungry python that might smell the scent of another animal that a zookeeper intern had just held will want to eat...NOW. Such an unnecessary death. With proper training this would never have happened. The python may have felt threatened if the kid was careless or made sudden moves.

Don't they teach respect for the nature of animals in zookeeper school?

No, put Lieberman in this cage. His head is small enough he'll go down easy.

No different than what happens to interns in a LOT of industries.

But usually it's the interns doing the swallowing.

Is the snake in the picture dead?

Did they kill it after it killed the guy? That picture is confusing.

I'm not buying this story. It seems hard to believe a 10 foot python could kill an adult human who was not incapacitated. A 20 foot , 300 pound python, maybe. Wikipedia says: "Small specimens"up to 3"4 meters (10"14 ft) long"eat mainly rodents such as rats."

This smells like BS.

First rule for keeping snakes: NEVER attempt to handle (or be alone with in this case) a snake over five feet long without at least two adults present. A ten foot long python is a very strong animal.
