Americans Elect Poodle As Obama's Top Dog

Now that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has chosen his running mate, it's time for him to concentrate on another important selection: family dog. The American Kennel Club® (AKC) announced today that the public has elected a Poodle as their breed of choice for the Obama family.

The AKC launched its poll to find a breed for Obama (www.presidentialpup.com) after reports that - win or lose - the Obamas promised their two daughters a dog after the presidential election. More than 42,000 people cast their vote over the seven-week campaign. The Poodle clinched the nomination after the breed battled it out with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in a race almost as tight as Clinton and Obama's run for the Democratic nomination for president. The Poodle won by a (dog) hair, with just a few hundred votes separating the top two contenders.

The Miniature Schnauzer, Bichon Frise, and Chinese Crested were also nominated, due to the distinct characteristics that make them uniquely suited for the Obama family. Every family is unique, but for the Obamas who have a daughter with allergies, a hypoallergenic breed with a very consistent and predictable coat is crucial.

"Most of our Presidents kept purebreds in the White House," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "When times get tough - during a bad economy or when presidential pressures are at their peak - these dogs serve as devoted and non-judgmental companions that bring joy and relaxation to our first families."

If the Obamas follow America's advice and choose a Poodle, the AKC will assist them in responsibly acquiring a puppy or adult rescue dog. The AKC's puppy-buyer resource page at www.puppybuyerinfo.com offers links to responsible breeders who are members of AKC clubs as well as to affiliated breed rescue-groups that have dogs for adoption. For instance, the Poodle National Breed Club web site can be located at http://www.poodleclubofamerica.org/usamap.htm.

The Obama family may be adding a dog to their household for the first time, but Republican nominee John McCain is ahead of the pack with 24 pets, including four dogs. Therefore, animal lovers may be ready to help him "fetch" the election. According to a recent Associated Press survey, "Pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner."

"It's no surprise the American public chose a Poodle for Obama," said Peterson. "Poodles are currently the eighth most popular breed in the U.S., according to 2007 AKC registrations statistics, and it spent more than two decades in the top spot - a true testament to its suitability as a family pet. And while Poodles require frequent grooming, their consistent and predictable coat is crucial for their daughter and all who suffer from allergies."

Poodles, often considered high-maintenance show dogs, can also be kept in a simple one-length clip. They are exceptionally smart and athletic, excel in obedience training and are great hunting companions. They are the only breed that comes in three sizes, any of which can easily adapt to life in the urban environment of the White House or the rural setting at Camp David. The Standard variety is the largest size, measuring over 15 inches at the shoulder. It is the oldest of the three varieties and developed for water retrieving. The Miniature measures over 10 inches but less than 15 inches and it is speculated that it was used for truffle hunting. The Toy Poodle measures 10 inches and under and was often used in performances and traveling entertainment groups. i totally agree about the shelter dogs; their kids have allergies so they had to go for just a few breeds. still, they can pick a purebred dog from a pound.

i have to tell you, i have a bichon frise and it is a dead ringer for the dog in that pic. he is even more charming than the obama family so be prepared america for a bliss overload.

They will get a mutt from the pound, and that dog will just keep adding to the love that's already so much a part of that family!

Don't be ridiculous a poodle would be a very bad choice for two little girls. Poodles are high stong loud and yappie. They often bite mall children. Not a good choice. I am a devoted canine enthusiast and have had many dogs and I strongly suggest a little sheltie. A sheltie looks like Lassie an All American Icon but it is minature. The dogs are highly intelligent and house brake easily. They are very affectionate and devoted to children. My children owned this breed when they were the 10 and 7. The girls will enjoy grooming and walking their little pet. Please consider a female sheltie.

The shedding will drive them nuts and what would a sheltie do all day? They'd have to acquire some sheep to keep them busy - oh wait, there's always congress - -

Shelties are not hypoallergenic. They could also consider a Tibetan Terrier or a Portuguese Water Dog.

An Airedale Terrier would be the most Presidential for a hypoallergenic breed.

poodles = smart, take well to training, and FRICKIN' adorable! but all dogs are adorable, so...

"all dogs are adorable." All dogs? Are you joking? Cocker Spaniels are the red-headed step-children of the canine world. Especially when they're puppies and they have those big eyes and floppy ears...literally makes me want to vomit. Plus, have you ever met a Cocker Spaniel? They're giant a**holes. I'd rather attach jumper cables to my testicles than spend ten minutes alone in a room with one of those fluffy, doe-eyed, satan spawns.
There! I said it! But don't pretend you all weren't thinking the same thing.

A sheltie is out. One of the children has allergies. That puts a huge limit on dog choice.

The Obama's should go with a shelter dog. It would speak volumes about how awesome they are.

for starters, that's not a poodle in the picture, it's a west highland terrier. Very nice breed as well and also pretty hypoallergenic.

not a poodle in picture it is a bichon frise

Maybe it just claims to be a poodle but is actually a closet bichon frise. FOX just reported it went to an all bichon training school as a pup.

Hi. I posted this before (sorry for the repeat!), but to answer your question, the picture is not photoshopped. The dog is "Baby" a female mini-poodle from a puppy-mill whose owners were about to put her to death because she was no longer able to bear puppies. She'd lived in a tiny cage, and her vocal chords were cut so her owners would not have to hear her barking. She was rescued by an advocate for the humane society, but her leg needed to be amputated because it was so mangled by her cage. Her new owner wrote a book, "A Rare Breed of Love", where she was pictured with many legislators and celebrities who are supportive of animal rights. That's where the picture came from. If the Obamas picked a rescue poodle, like her, I'd be happy.

so O is an animal rights advocate? that would be AWESOME...

Good lord, is there anything about the Obama that doesn't bring tears to most people's eyes. Can't he just once do something that seems more human than messianic. I'm not asking for much...maybe at a press conference he can refer to a reporter as a "the fatty over there in the corner" or threaten to slash a ref's tires after a bad call at a basketball game...just something to make me feel like I'm not an entire failure as a human being.

I hope they get the dog the girls want, not what the country wants. I also hope they either rescue or get from a responsible breeder, for Pete's sake. The last thing we need is a president who buys from a pet store and supports the puppy mills.

I think most of us seem to be forgetting something...the dog is for the girls. Perhaps we should let them make the decision.
I'd hope that Barack and Michelle would tell the girls about animal rescue facilities vs. pure-bred AKC canines, give them the information, and let them decide whether they want to go to the pound and find a rescue or go with a pure-bred.

Are any of those 42% wolf, or wolf hybrid owners? If so - do they know P@lin has a bounty on the forelegs of their best friends? And watch out for the pups - she supports bashing in their little skulls.
