Americans Elect Poodle As Obama's Top Dog

Now that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has chosen his running mate, it's time for him to concentrate on another important selection: family dog. The American Kennel Club® (AKC) announced today that the public has elected a Poodle as their breed of choice for the Obama family.

The AKC launched its poll to find a breed for Obama (www.presidentialpup.com) after reports that - win or lose - the Obamas promised their two daughters a dog after the presidential election. More than 42,000 people cast their vote over the seven-week campaign. The Poodle clinched the nomination after the breed battled it out with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in a race almost as tight as Clinton and Obama's run for the Democratic nomination for president. The Poodle won by a (dog) hair, with just a few hundred votes separating the top two contenders.

The Miniature Schnauzer, Bichon Frise, and Chinese Crested were also nominated, due to the distinct characteristics that make them uniquely suited for the Obama family. Every family is unique, but for the Obamas who have a daughter with allergies, a hypoallergenic breed with a very consistent and predictable coat is crucial.

"Most of our Presidents kept purebreds in the White House," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "When times get tough - during a bad economy or when presidential pressures are at their peak - these dogs serve as devoted and non-judgmental companions that bring joy and relaxation to our first families."

If the Obamas follow America's advice and choose a Poodle, the AKC will assist them in responsibly acquiring a puppy or adult rescue dog. The AKC's puppy-buyer resource page at www.puppybuyerinfo.com offers links to responsible breeders who are members of AKC clubs as well as to affiliated breed rescue-groups that have dogs for adoption. For instance, the Poodle National Breed Club web site can be located at http://www.poodleclubofamerica.org/usamap.htm.

The Obama family may be adding a dog to their household for the first time, but Republican nominee John McCain is ahead of the pack with 24 pets, including four dogs. Therefore, animal lovers may be ready to help him "fetch" the election. According to a recent Associated Press survey, "Pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner."

"It's no surprise the American public chose a Poodle for Obama," said Peterson. "Poodles are currently the eighth most popular breed in the U.S., according to 2007 AKC registrations statistics, and it spent more than two decades in the top spot - a true testament to its suitability as a family pet. And while Poodles require frequent grooming, their consistent and predictable coat is crucial for their daughter and all who suffer from allergies."

Poodles, often considered high-maintenance show dogs, can also be kept in a simple one-length clip. They are exceptionally smart and athletic, excel in obedience training and are great hunting companions. They are the only breed that comes in three sizes, any of which can easily adapt to life in the urban environment of the White House or the rural setting at Camp David. The Standard variety is the largest size, measuring over 15 inches at the shoulder. It is the oldest of the three varieties and developed for water retrieving. The Miniature measures over 10 inches but less than 15 inches and it is speculated that it was used for truffle hunting. The Toy Poodle measures 10 inches and under and was often used in performances and traveling entertainment groups. Well, I vote for a pug, but seriously, if Obama is going to get his girls a pet, he would be doing the world an ENORMOUS service by getting a rescue dog and refusing to get one from a puppy mill. That one act could do more to help the plight of animals in this country than any amount of PETA preaching could accomplish. So I say, whatever the breed, make a BIG point of getting a rescue dog, preferably a GREAT AMERICAN MUTT!

Exactly! I agree wholeheartedly. The American Kennel Club can take a hike. They care about bloodlines and pedigree, concepts that are remnants of British aristocracy. And cruel. Pedigreed dogs suffer many illnesses because we have cruelly bred them to suit our fancy.

Cheers to that! The Obamas need to teach those girls the value and joy of adopting an animal from a shelter. Plus it would serve as a great example to the rest of the country.

If there's a serious allergy here, he should not be pushed into getting a dog - not even by these gorgeous little children. There's nothing worse than watching a small child fall in love with a pet only to swell up every time she goes near it, until you have to break her heart and find it somewhere else to live.
Poodles are supposed to be very good for people with allergies, but I feel it's a convention he doesn't need to follow.
I love the idea though that if they 'behave on the campaign trail, you'll get a dog!'
Plainly I should have worked my parents better as a kid.

Poodles, what a great choice. They are very loyal to their owners. Loyalty is just what Obama is going to need when he gets into the White House. Poodles can distinguish between friend and foe, my miniature would just as soon tear your ankles off than let you near me if you intend harm. Otherwise, she's really sweet and loving.

Ok I beg to differ with the recommendation of the AKC. I have the most adorable, smartest, caring , sweetest, puppy pooh in the whole wide world. He is chocolate and has a soft fleece coat. He is an Australian Labradoodle and does not shed. Australian Labradoodles are seeing eye dogs for the blind. Rutland Manor in Australia developed the breed, the two main breeding houses out of Australia are Rutland Manor and Tegan Park in Australia. They keep the breed under tight control and there reputable breeders here in the U.S.
I have to say I would never purchase any dog from anyone wily nily, I researched for 6 months because my kids were desperate. Then we were on a waiting list for another four months after our application was approved by the breeder. When we went to meet the puppy a couple of weeks before bringing him home he looked like a webkin and he was worth every minute. This October 16th. he (Bruno) will be 1 yr. old and we still feel the same, we don't know how we ever got along without him.

They feel he should get a rescue and there are very few rescue Australian Labradoodles.

Stupid remark. Christians don't have an issue with pets. Obama is a Christian.

I was joking! I know the man is a Christian, but 25% of the Republican party doesn't know it.

As the proud owner of a Standard Poodle (my SIXTH), let me say that a standard poodle is a great dog. They are incredibly intelligent, good family dogs. My poodles have all been excellent watch dogs that rival the 9 German Shepherds I have had over my lifetime. My current poodle is about 75 pounds of non-shedding dog. The only drawback is that you either have to groom them yourself or pay someone else to groom them.

A poodle is the perfect pet for the Obama family for all of the reasons mentioned. They are wonderful pets who are tougher than most people believe. Many a poodle has survived a coyote encounter because unlike other dogs, they will not run. They will stand up and fight.

I have one and know this to be true.

I recommend they either get a Standard or a Miniature -- not a toy.

A poodle is perfect for the One. The dog should enjoy the Chicago winters.

Find a rescue poodle. Adoption, not purchase is the responsible thing to do. As a poodle owner of both standard and minis, I believe they would represent the First Family well in both their dignified and playful manner. Man, they are smart. Get two. Rescue poodles would already be neutered. Don't confuse a breed with a metaphor, racial or political.

Sure McCain has 24 pets...but who takes care of them? How many people are on his household staff. Obama doesn't have that luxury. I thing he is being responsible by not having a pet given his schedule.

Better yet, a greyhound. There are so many of them that need homes. They're used for racing and then just tossed aside. Because they're used to being around so many different handlers, they aren't intimidated by strangers and are very good with children. They have no undercoat, so the allergies are kept to a minimum.
