Americans Elect Poodle As Obama's Top Dog

Now that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has chosen his running mate, it's time for him to concentrate on another important selection: family dog. The American Kennel Club® (AKC) announced today that the public has elected a Poodle as their breed of choice for the Obama family.

The AKC launched its poll to find a breed for Obama (www.presidentialpup.com) after reports that - win or lose - the Obamas promised their two daughters a dog after the presidential election. More than 42,000 people cast their vote over the seven-week campaign. The Poodle clinched the nomination after the breed battled it out with the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in a race almost as tight as Clinton and Obama's run for the Democratic nomination for president. The Poodle won by a (dog) hair, with just a few hundred votes separating the top two contenders.

The Miniature Schnauzer, Bichon Frise, and Chinese Crested were also nominated, due to the distinct characteristics that make them uniquely suited for the Obama family. Every family is unique, but for the Obamas who have a daughter with allergies, a hypoallergenic breed with a very consistent and predictable coat is crucial.

"Most of our Presidents kept purebreds in the White House," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "When times get tough - during a bad economy or when presidential pressures are at their peak - these dogs serve as devoted and non-judgmental companions that bring joy and relaxation to our first families."

If the Obamas follow America's advice and choose a Poodle, the AKC will assist them in responsibly acquiring a puppy or adult rescue dog. The AKC's puppy-buyer resource page at www.puppybuyerinfo.com offers links to responsible breeders who are members of AKC clubs as well as to affiliated breed rescue-groups that have dogs for adoption. For instance, the Poodle National Breed Club web site can be located at http://www.poodleclubofamerica.org/usamap.htm.

The Obama family may be adding a dog to their household for the first time, but Republican nominee John McCain is ahead of the pack with 24 pets, including four dogs. Therefore, animal lovers may be ready to help him "fetch" the election. According to a recent Associated Press survey, "Pet owners favor McCain over Obama 42 percent to 37 percent, with dog owners particularly in McCain's corner."

"It's no surprise the American public chose a Poodle for Obama," said Peterson. "Poodles are currently the eighth most popular breed in the U.S., according to 2007 AKC registrations statistics, and it spent more than two decades in the top spot - a true testament to its suitability as a family pet. And while Poodles require frequent grooming, their consistent and predictable coat is crucial for their daughter and all who suffer from allergies."

Poodles, often considered high-maintenance show dogs, can also be kept in a simple one-length clip. They are exceptionally smart and athletic, excel in obedience training and are great hunting companions. They are the only breed that comes in three sizes, any of which can easily adapt to life in the urban environment of the White House or the rural setting at Camp David. The Standard variety is the largest size, measuring over 15 inches at the shoulder. It is the oldest of the three varieties and developed for water retrieving. The Miniature measures over 10 inches but less than 15 inches and it is speculated that it was used for truffle hunting. The Toy Poodle measures 10 inches and under and was often used in performances and traveling entertainment groups. Oh, please, get a mutt from an animal shelter and save the lives of many thousands of abandoned dogs. I have one mutt and one purebred -- the purebred knocks over the kitchen garbage and grinds it into the floor while the mutt is worth her weight in gold.

I agree... a multi-cultural dog for a multi-cultural family!

Whenever I see a poodle with a normal cut (as opposed to those awful french cuts), I'm always amazed at how good they look. I prefer the medium sized ones (the ratio looks more right to me). Some of those hybrids are ultra cute. I've seen some goldendoodles literally hurt me they are so cute.

Hi Sheri -- this African-American woman has a registered Bichon Frise - Chloe - she has clothes, more toys than my newborn nephew! By the way - I first learned about the breed when my sister (who has allergies and asthma) bought one! So may I suggest (with love and respect) that you rethink your position?

The best dog I ever had was a poodle/bichon mix (RIP Teddy). Even temper, loved kids, no shedding, perfect in every way. It's too bad so many think they need a purebred, when the mixes are so wonderful and usually in need of a home.

The dog in the phot looks like a bichon frise to me ( I have two) not a poodle.

dog owners are victims of pack mentality.
a poodle is not a dog.
Cats rule....I have 3 cats and 4 dogs.....dogs are optional for the WH.

cats rule their own lives; dogs rule their owners. I spend all day watcing these interactions at work and dogs rule by the most sophisticated manipulation. They have total control of their humans. Whichever dog the Obamas pick will in truth be the most powerful creature on the planet.

So........
The picture that is up is clearly photo-shopped

It should at least be labeled as such
Even then its pretty shady to do as its clearly intended to feed into the liberal elitist talking point

A poodle is a liberal dog?

You have got to get out more.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:10 PM on 08/28/2008

No its not that poodle's are liberal persay
But they stand for rich spoiled elitists

The Paris Hilton types all run around with little miniture dogs
"Real men like Bush or McCain" they will say, own real dogs like german shepards or a bloodhound or something

There's no real logic to the argument
But that is what the person who photo-shopped this picture was trying to do

You gotta love a man who is confident enough to own a poodle. Think about this a second. When you speak to a poodle they understand and respond. You talk to John McCain, he looks at you like what are you talking about? Poodles are smart, friendly, sensitive, FRENCH, total lovers. Much like the DNC, we fight and protect our own, call others on the carpet if they do wrong. Sort of in keeping with all we represent. People laugh at poodles, say they are frou frou pets. They are only as frou frou as you make them. They have attitude. If you were that small, had people taller than you running around you, you can't speak thier language, you too would be freaking out. What I like about them is that they know who is evil and who isn't. They will pee on people they don't like. I say get the GOP and rain on thier parade with my blessings.

LOL! Get O's poodle to go to the republican convention next week. I'd pay good money to see him pee on everyone.

Breed specific AKC propaganda is the problem with our country and it's relationship with pets. Thousands of fine pets are available in shelters across the country. Most have been abandoned by irresponsible owners who bought into breed specific propaganda. Having AKC registration is a very profitable business greatly benefiting the AKC. Overbreeding, lack of spay and neutering and irresponsible owners are so prevelant that feeding this illusion to make the AKC richer is just criminal. Adopt the best dog you find at your local shelter Obama family and let the AKC take more responsibility for the problem they either ignore or make worse to line their own pockets.
