SHANGHAI -- Ten central government departments, including the powerful Ministry of Finance, "misused or embezzled" more than $660 million last year, according to a report from China's top auditor.

The report said 88 people had been arrested, 14 officials had been referred for prosecution and an additional 104 government employees had been punished for their roles in mismanaging or embezzling government funds, state media reported Thursday.

Liu Jiayi, the nation's top auditor, said in the report that a further $6 billion in government funds had been "mismanaged" last year, and that fraud had been detected in dozens of government bureaus, including the Ministry of Education, the National Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Health, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television. Even the State Administration of Taxation was accused of fraud.

This is a welcome news. I wonder what people make out of this. Does anyone know about the biggest scandal in Taiwan right now? The former President Chen is under criminal investigation involving $ hundreds of millions in Swiss bank account. He is divorcing his wife to blame it all on her. Nobody is reporting about it, because he was a pro-independent America's favorite.

Remember our own Pentagon announced it could not account for something like 2 TRILLION dollars some years back. Wonder where all of that went?

The amount of money the Chinese are fessing up to (if it's accurate) is peanuts compared to what our own government is missing through graft and mismanagement.

Let's remember that just a little over 30 years ago China was still in the midst of the cultural revolution. The changes that have taken place are mind boggling. Who knows what the next 30 years will bring?

The next 30 years? Try the next THREE years, pal.

I don't know about you, but everytime I look at a dollar bill, my eyes slant a little more.
